  • Hey there!
    in this episode, i took one of my student's line drawing- which i thought was really good; and shared with them my methods of finalizing it to the point of presentation (as quickly as i could)
    it's a long video at 2.5 hours, but i like the idea of being totally transparent about my workflows, mistakes and happenstances in all of my classes.

    i have been working in the industry for about now a yeaand half and unfortunately I have had to character design, prop design, env and call out designs, To be honest I went in thinking that drawing was the only skill I needed and even though I am not a art student, my graphic design background helped. Now the bummer or when reality hit me and Hit me really hard is when I saw the amount of designs that you have to produce in a day, by the week and after 2 3 months .
    This video is almost a miracle and a manual of how to do things, One Advice I would give any young oncept artist who is interested in a career of concept art and design, learn to work fast and these techniques by jarold are literally cheats that will make you keep your job, If you want to draw and paint everything from scratch, you can do that but most likely you will get burned out, hold up production and eventually someone else will be hired.

    I used to be so against this technique but I cant help but to fall in love with it at the same time.

      haha yes i feel you, photobashing is just one of the many techniques to get things done. but a strong base of painting sense is always ideal

      I think photobashing is a good way to improve speed and eficiency also photorealistic feel, as long as you know what to do with the photo and combine it with body elements, the final result is more important than the process , right? :)

      He is an amzing artist, check out his batman, the truth is all or most concept artists have the skills to draw and paint this from scratch but I have even found out the hard way that in the industry and client work you won't get time to paint for hours days and days. they are expected to produce results very very fast and it can kill creativity.

    Amazing video! I subscribed immediately . Please keep making videos of your process without editing, it’s these minor thinking and techniques that students get the most of! You are great at explaining what is your goal and technique for each action. Excited to see your future videos, there aren’t many UA-cam channels like yours

    Where do you find pictures so clean for textures? Do you use any paid service or there's a free source for concept artist?

    Am an aspiring concept designer. And i feel so frustrated because i cannot paint ... so many ideas in my head but i just cannot draw and paint these ideas .... so sad and infuriating.. i will try to photobash though, this may be the blessed answer to ease my pain and struggle.

      it's like any skill or sport- imagine yourself learning to play basketball or the guitar. it's going to be slow, grueling and long.
      so my advice is structure the hours, like 30 mins a day, or an hour if you can. but it's about the daily repetition.
      a little bit EVERYDAY. but just as much as you can give only.
      then fill the remainder of your day with plenty of fun and rest to re-energize and to calm the inner demons. believe me, we all have them.
      try it out. within 3 months it'll become a forgettable practice, within 6 months it'll become encouraging, within 12 months you will start to head towards Mastery

    hey, great video! really helpful! I have a question. Is it breaking copywrite laws to use other peoples 3d models (body sculpts, cloth etc..) as photobashing material for your own pieces? Just asking so I dont break any rules when I start working. thank you!

    Hey, at 10:27 you "clean up" texture, can you explain how you did that?

  • @xXbananaXxist
    @xXbananaXxist 5 років тому +1

    How much do you paint over it or do you always leave it like that?

    • @jaroldsng
      @jaroldsng  5 років тому +2

      hey there, it depends on the needs of the project, if it's just quick visualizations and the client wants to see options- i'd keep them raw textures even.
      will then commit to a tighter render once the idea is locked

    I've noticed photobashing is a really soulless technique. I think its ok for concept artists to use, but when I see art that is blatantly photobashed trying to be passed as a "panting" I just cringe. It's often abused by people who can't draw or paint on their own. While concept artists use it to just get a basic idea across without much style or effort, which is the whole point of the technique.

    • @jaroldsng
      @jaroldsng  4 роки тому +3

      Jawa , hey there! That is a good observation. I personally enjoy photo bashing a lot for how quick and expressive I can be with visualising designs I have in my head.
      But I do agree that it’s not for everyone.
      There are many artists out there who’s design sense shine through despite the use of heavy photo-bashing in their workflow- so I do believe it’s a matter of knowing when to use it and when to stop

    • @thegunslinger966
      @thegunslinger966 4 роки тому +1

      Actually this technique is used by fantasy artists like Legends of Cryptids . This technique is going strong and it is the proof that digital art can be as strong as traditional art, and that one doesn't need so much basic sketching skill to make a masterpiece . So I would say it's actually a trend in the artistic world, more and more people can produce art even though they haven't completed basic traditional training. It's like magic!

    • @jawa8472
      @jawa8472 4 роки тому +4

      Papa Stalin I’m gonna have to disagree with you on some points, Stalin. Photobashing can not be classified as “painting” and it should not be compared to hand drawn digital work or traditional work. A piece of art where each element is carefully recreated from memory and skill just isn’t the same as pasting a picture in, transforming it and editing the color balance. A lot less training and technical skill is required to photobash. That’s why it’s mostly used for concept art and planing; its cheap. Its not nearly as time consuming as hand drawn pieces yet it also has many limitations. I am not denying that photobashing is an art form, I just believe that being able to photobash does not mean being a “digital painter” and definitely not a drawer. I believe this because art is not about final effect it’s about technique and process. Most digital painters avoid such techniques as 3D rendering elements and photobashing because they believe it’s a hack move that just cuts corners and reduces the artistic value of a piece. Perhaps I’m a bit bias, maybe all that matters to most is the final image, but to me, honesty, raw talent and technical skill is what impresses me.

      @@jawa8472 Hmm yeah I think it makes sense

    • @jawa8472
      @jawa8472 4 роки тому +1

      @Akasha Well, actually the original title had the keyword "painting" in it; which is what provoked my comment. Also, I never denied it was an art form. If you read my comment thoroughly you would know that.
      By "no one cares" you mean average consumers right? If art to you is only about marketing to those people, then you are absolutely right! I can assure you though, that same art won't be acknowledged the same way by people who actually know what they're talking about. Those are "the few"-- the few that actually care about art and how it works. Me personally, I rather do what's fulfilling and challenging regardless of what others think. If you think the final result is most important that's fine; do what makes you happy, that's what counts. Just don't try to pass it as something with an assigned greater value just because you think it'll impress others more.
      Sorry for ranting. I'd like to hear what you think though.
