Do you need the teachers books or is it pretty straightforward in the student book?
I felt the student book was enough :)
We are in our 2nd year using this program (Grade 2 this year) I love this because it's not just memorizing words. It reinforces phonics and practices using the words. We do Word Study (and then I add a pre-test) on Day 1, The Phonics and Reading Page on Day 2, The Word Study and either the Writing or Content page on Day 3 (I just choose based on which seems more interesting, but I do try to make sure we do the writing on at least every 3 weeks or so to get practice with the editing marks), and then on Day 4 just a test. It's our only spelling program and one of the subjects she can do almost totally independently - except for tests. Probably the least stressful school subject we do - LOL. I hope it works for you guys.
That is a great schedule have going for you! We are really enjoying it, and so far it's matched up with our AAS really well!
Did you purchase the teacher guide with the student book?

My 5th grader is terrible at spelling. We are currently doing AAS 3 and we are about half way through. I don’t like it and my son doesn’t like it. It is taking us a long time. I know part of it is, that I’m not consistent with it. It seems like every time we start a new lesson he’s forgotten words from the previous lessons.
He wants a workbook like his brother but I have done workbooks with him before and they don’t work either. We have tried spelling you see, LOE, BJU (what his brother is using) and now AAS. I have stayed with AAS the longest because I hear nothing but great things about it.
He needs spelling rules and phonics taught with spelling, but he also needs more activities to practice the words than AAS has.
Do you think this would work if I dropped AAS and just did this? Does it have enough “teaching” like AAS does? And what level would I start him in? Maybe 3rd? Sorry for all the questions. I need help.
We are in level 3 of AAS and I'm using level 3 of spelling connections. How I am using this is we do our initial lesson of AAS then we spend the rest of the week doing the coordinating pages of spelling connections.
I didn't buy the teachers guide so I'm not sure how much extra instruction would be offered if you only used this program.
Another option is to use AAS for one day to introduce the concept, then print your own worksheet using the AAS words. You can make your own fun games from this site for free www.commoncoresheets.com/spelling-worksheet-creator
