- Spelling lists not working? Watch for a walk-through of an All About Spelling Level 1 lesson!
This spelling curriculum is great for homeschoolers - it's complete, comprehensive, multisensory, and so easy to use that anyone can teach their child to spell with it (even if you can't read your own writing sometimes). You don't need to have any special knowledge or training, just open and go.

Please note that this is NOT a sponsored review and I purchased the curriculum with my own money. We just think it's great!
This was extremely helpful and very well done. Thank you so much!
You're welcome Heidi, thank you!
Thank you! Curious how long a lesson takes?
My 7y.o. is reading easily at the 4th grade level, but spelling has not come as easily. We did the AASpelling placement test, she breezed through the reading, but misspelled 3 of the 7 dictated words ("bathetub" for bathtub; "qwik" for quick; and "chopstiks" for chopsticks). Because of that the placement test said Level 1. Viewing this. I'm afraid she might find Level 1 too easy, boring. Can we skip Level 1? Can we skip lessons within Level 1? Is there a Level 1 Table of Contents somewhere so I can see how many lessons in Level 1 we can skip?
Same with my daughter! She’s 8 and misspelled two of those words also. I’m wondering if level 1 is too easy
Did you end up using level 1? My daughter is going into 4th grade. High level of reading, but still struggles with her spelling. ABS placed her at level 1 with the assessment test.
AMAZING review! I’ve been looking into all about spelling for a while because Spelling u see didn’t work for us . Thanks to this review I’ll be purchasing All About spelling
Thanks Blair, glad it was helpful!
Is there a workbook that comes with this level? I want to purchase a manual from another mom, but the website said that the color edition is not compatible with the black and white version. The manual I want to purchase is the black and white version.
Thankyou, this was very helpful! With 3 kids, this is not the curriculum for me. 😅
I know someone who does it with TEN children Courtney! But yes, different levels can be hard to juggle.
I was gifted a pre owned level 1 set to get my struggling student started. There was no progress chart. Is there somewhere you could direct me to be able to download one?
Sure is - there's one in the sample.

I enjoyed this video. At what level of All About Reading should I introduce All About Spelling?
Hi Monica,
AAL answer this pretty comprehensively on their site.

All the best,
Kelly.
Thanks for this video. I assume this isn't the color version they have now? Also did your child use the All about Reading? My child just finished lev 2. We started homeschooling this year and started with lev 2 because that is where he was at. So now we are ready to add All about spelling. And according to the placement test it says to start with lev 1 in the spelling. But the phonograms he already knows, so i am just curious how that works? Maybe he is just that much further ahead? Thanks in advance. :D
Hi Tina, you're right, this is the non-colour version, and yes, we've also used All About Reading. Hmm, that's a tricky one. If I were you'd I'd start with level 2 and see how he goes. He might fly through it, or he might find spelling the phonograms from memory trickier than reading them. If he has trouble you can always go back to level 1. Hope that helps!
I'd reccomend starting with level one, if it's too easy you can go through it quicker or switch, that way you build on confidence rather than getting a higher level, finding it's too hard and risking his confidence in spelling. Of course, some children are more sensitive than others on this but this is a way to make sure there's less gaps in a child's knowledge too. :)
Where did you get the magnetic notebook? What size is it and do you think it’s big enough?
The thing the letters are on? It's just a magnetic whiteboard! The bigger the better, ours got a little crowded. I've also seen people use biscuit/cookie sheets.
Great overview, thanks
For level one, do they cover only short sounds? Or also long vowels ?
Thank you! This was super helpful!
Thanks Andrea, I'm glad to hear it!
super helpful thanks! Would you say this program teaches spelling by phonics instead of memorization?
Definitely phonics-based but technically, the child has to "memorize" the rules and apply them to all applicable words. If that makes sense. So there not taught to memorize the words, but rather, to learn and recall the rules as they say the words, recall and picture them in their head, and apply the rules to the word as they spell it. Hope that isn't confusing lol
Yes, definitely! It does require memorisation of phonograms etc., but doesn't expect whole-word memorisation apart from a handful of sight words.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this 💗
You're welcome Thanda!
Very helpful, thank you.
I'm considering purchasing this for my family, and having my oldest two (they will be 2nd and 5th) start from level 1. Do you think this would be frustratingly easy for an older child? Also, do you recommend getting each of them a student pack? Of could I get away with just one?
Hi Ally, there are placement tests on the site, I recommend doing those before choosing a level.
You might be able to use one student packet for two children, but I think it's best to have one each, so you can organise the flashcards per child. Otherwise, if one has mastered a word/sound and the other hasn't, it will be hard to make sure you're giving them each the proper review.
I have a blog post with links to the placement tests and more info.

Hope that helps! Feel free to ask any more questions you have.
Do you feel like 6yr old is young to start this? My daughter is doing first grade reading but has difficulty spelling.
Hi Zehra, I think you'd need to try it to know. My eldest would have been OK with this at 6 but my others would have started later. It depends on so many factors, and every child is different. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer!
How many days a week are the lessons?
I find it depends on how easy the child finds a lesson - we've had a few that have been completed in 30m. But I think if you allow about 20m a day, 4 days a week, you'd comfortably complete a lesson if the child is ready for it.
