Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦, here where I live protea plants grow naturally on Table Mountain and the other mountains, I have a huge passion for fynbos. My tips are fynbos and proteas like poor well draining sandy soil, you must under no circumstances fertilize them. The like acidic soil. We have a mediterranean climate dry summer and wet winters. Once you plant your protea in the ground that's it, don't try to relocate it, it will die super sensitive roots. To increase acidity and pine needles or rooibos tea leaf.

Sorry, Jason. Protease are native to the Cape Province of South Africa, not Australia. They may grow well in Australia but they are the pride and joy of South Africa and our national flower. Proudly South African!!!

Love your thorough presentation! I am partial to Grevilla “Supreme”. Family Proteus, They have been constant year round bloomers in magnificent coral pink& cream spidery blossoms. Your explanation regarding the root system makes a lot of sense and how I observe their growth once planted in my garden. It takes months for them to get really established but once they do they flourish. I now have 4 “Supreme” and three @Peaches and Cream”. The hummingbirds have a constant supply of food!

Thank you for your informative video! It's wonderful to see protea lovers from around the world. My favourite proteas are probably the lesser known pagoda bushes, or mimetes. Some are very rare and facing extinction. You are lucky to have had so little trouble with your proteas. Even though I live in the Western Cape of South Africa, where proteas come from, it's always been a losing battle. Phytopthera, a root fungus, kills many plants, often wilting and dying within 48 hours. They also need perfect drainage with acid soil. Will not tolerate cement or concrete in the soil, which makes the soil alkaline. (There are some species that are adapted to alkaline soil, however.) They also need constant air flow. It's very windy here in the Cape, especially in summer. I hope that one day you'll be able to come here and see them in their natural enviroment, growing in the windswept mountains.
Wow, I was planning on planting 8 or more 5 gallon specimens in a raised 3 foot high bed with thick board form concrete walls. It won’t be in the soil though, but this raises concern...
@@DanaBrown1984 Yes, the alkalinity from the concrete might leach into the soil and cause problems over time. How about lining the bed with plastic damp proof course (DPC) plastic?

If you've tried proteas in clay soil by now, you'll have realised it's the soil type they are most likely to die in. Almost all proteas prefer sandy or loamy soil and don't cope with waterlogging, so if you're going to plant over clay, build up a large mound with loose, free-draining soil to plant the protea in and mulch well!

I found your channel while looking for info on Proteas and it is very informative. I love the plants and would like to get some for myself. I live in the Caribbean and it seems they will grow well here. Can you give me info on where I can buy plants in the USA, I know where to get some seeds but I am very interested in the Lucodendrons.
Very informative video! I just brought home a silver tree and a Banksia Prionotes but I'm in the Hollywood area. I see you're in SOCAL too. Will they do okay? I was told they prefer to be by the coast.
Hi Jason, thank you for this very informative video. I’m way down south in Australia in a temperate climate. I have a protea ground growing (about 4’ high) that is a few years old now and has thrived until recently. After our winter when the night temperatures have gone down to 41F (no frost) 3/4 of the leaves on the stems are dead and this year the spring flowers are small. We will be going into our hot summer soon. Your advise: remove leaves, prune flowers??? I would appreciate your advice I don’t want to loose this beautiful I’ml plant
Did your protea survive the summer? Not a lot of rainfall this year since January!
I think the main problem with Protea cultivation is that they are cool growers, so in hot summer Mediterranean or warm temperate climates the summer heat is unbearable for them. My experience is that they are plants that need little, but continuous care and careful watering depending on the season. In other words they need steady growing conditions.
Just got a protea from Costco here in Dallas. The leaves are looking very bleached out and burnt and crispy. Any suggestions on how to help it? We are in zone 8b.

I also live in southern CA and typically use a systemic pest control in the spring for my shrubs an d trees. This year I potted 4 pin cushion protea and 2 king protea shrubs. Would you recommend treating the protea in Southern CA along with my other trees, fruit trees and shrubs?

my outdoor protea plant is 6 years old and although it still flowers (only from new growth) the bottom part look woody and brown. How deep can I prune it
Based in the SF bay area. I've had a pin cushion proteus mixed in very successfully with my succulents for about 6-7 years, but lately the branches and leaves are brown and dry, although there's new green growth at the tips and the flowers are still pretty vibrant. Should I cut it way back once the flowering is done? Or is the plant near the end of its lifespan? If so, can I cultivate a new one from the green cuttings? Thanks!

Our Soil.is very Alkaline. How deep should i dig hole with amended soil? Will 50% peat moss, 50% top soil, tgen mix in either course sand or grit or perlite? Would this be perfect mix? Could i use pine needles as mulch or rooibos tea leafs ?
Have you ever used coco coir instead of peat moss? Do you see any problems with using coconut coir? And would feather meal be ok to use for fertilizer?
I live in a warmer climate on Oahu, but have a patio with an area that gets some sun. Would this work?
How many hours of sun per day would you consider "full sun" It is common to have a space where the plant gets five or six hours in the morning and is in the shade of the house or some tree in the afternoon.
full sun is 6-8 hours. yes, the east side of the house should work fine!

Hello there ! My banskia coccinea has been dying . It’s looking very wrinkled and thin and I have a little bit of green but not much . I changed the soils for I thought it may have root rot . Is there any way of saving it ?
Great video! Thank you! I live in central Northern California on the coast and my soil is very clay like in areas. Should I amend the soil prior to planting? And if so what would you amend it with?
I have Protea's thriving in heavy clay, use good potting medium but go for it
last year I noticed rust on my 10yo leucodendron . We live in zone 9 near the ocean. I water the roots once a month and I dont water over head. Any suggestions?
@ad hortus what about repotting? I’m in an area that my plant is strictly a container plant. Does it like to be root bound, gradual increase in pot sizes, or can be put from say a 1 gal to a 10 gallon as long as watering properly is followed? Thanks in advance. Also is peet enough of an acidifier or do you add an amendment to adjust ph?

Nice video but Proteas are not native to Australia. They are native to South Africa. The Cape to be exact and hence the national plant of South Africa. They like dry conditions and grown in burnt mountainous terrain
My proteus has reddish brown patches, just planted 3 days ago in arizona.
What should I fertilise them with?

Saying hi from South Africa I have one question we have a protea orchard on our farm and sone proteas have died due to a disease do you have any idea what it could be its red spots what is it called
So its a disease that is derived from wetting the foliage, soaker hose systems are more effective methods of watering thank sprinklers or overhead watering. keep those leaves dry!
