For a much harder challenge check out the spring loaded rocket gliders that a friend of Flite Test makes!
These might give you some inspiration for how to maximize flight with a rocket motor. Generally it's straight up then float down spiraling as slowly as possible.

When I was a kid we would tape as many as 8 bottle rockets to paper planes. Then launch them with big rubber bands. So much fun!
Comment 😎
I have a question?
For making a small airplane to break sound barrier what is ratio of fuel to mass.
Or is it possible really???
טיפ מימני למטוסים מנייר תעשה כונס אויר מאחורה מאיפה שמחזיקים ותעלה אותו
Video idea: try breaking the sound barrier with model rockets
"I accidentally made an APFSDST and got into trouble with the authorities"
@@YodielandInhabitant710 hahahaha
I saw it happen at a UKRA meet many years ago. An Estes Mosquito with an oversized engine. More of a snap than a sonic boom, and then it rained paper.
Very difficult in the UK
Many clips of model rockets brake the sound barrier, u can find it on UA-cam
Rocket engine: Exist
ProjectAir: let's stick them everywhere :)
Love the videos
Cool. Would've preferred more footage of the successful build at the end. Surprisingly simple design to get it to glide.
If you balance a chunk of foam correctly, it will fly!
@@Project-Air It can be as simple as a sheet of foam board : ua-cam.com/video/tRVJTHLlUB4/v-deo.html 😜
I saw the title and said "that's stupid it'll just burn..." yup nailed it
Always a pleasure to watch👍
Loved the:"they all ended up crashing" 😂
Cool idea! That foamboard plane was more controllable than I expected.
It is a real pity that he only uploads once a month, while his video’s are so amazing.
@The Lone Creator "love it" ? first of all focus on your build and content, second of all stop spamming, third dont expect anyone to love it.
That’s why they are so good:)
I did something similar with a hot wheels track, my 3rd place pinewood derby car, and a model rocket engine. The pre drilled weight holes fit the motor perfectly! It even flew… off my deck and into the yard. It was spectacular!
Great video as always!!! I'm REALLY loving your Mini!!! I was stationed there from 2005-2008 and had a black '83 Austin Mini. It even got into Mini Magazine a couple times in the rally section. Keep up the great work!!!!
Really old Bottle Rockets work well for paper airplanes. By old, I mean Bottle Rockets from 2-3 years ago that someone put in the Garage and forgot about. Older Bottle Rockets don't burn quite as fast, so it's more gentle on the paper airplane... This is what I learned going to college in Tallahassee, Florida.
Shout-out to Jules Verne for writing Robur the Conqueror back in 1886, about a dude who builds a (*gasp*) heavier-than-air airship out of a mysterious substance. "What was this material, so hard that the bowie-knife of Phil Evans could not scratch it, and Uncle Prudent could not explain its nature? Simply paper!"
I used to use fire crackers that I turned into rocket engines. I shot my paper airplanes from a little balcony. Some models worked quite well. The fire cracker engines where not that powerful and that helped. And yes, I hade some fiery miss-haps too.
I have a little booklet somewhere where I noted the flight statistics. Need to search for it.
Real quick, I think you should try building a motorized kite.
The end result is SO SATISFYING. That's something I'd buy at a toy store and play with for hours.
I love how he just tried out rockets one time and now he’s fascinated by them
(I only play with rocket planes now)
It's been an ongoing interest for about 10 years :)
You should try Tyvek. It's waterproof, durable, light, and more rigid than standard paper
As kids we did this 60 years ago. We did 3 stage rocket planes with “penny” sky rockets. During the Second World War my Dad and his buddies made insect powered planes (the problem he reported was convincing bugs to flap their wings while their bodies were glued to something).
Only in ohio
I like that your super simple plane... was still true to the most traditional paper plane shape :D
You guys have way too much empty fields in the UK
It’s all for the 🐑
@@Project-Air Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, ^oo^
FINALLY another airplane video. To say that i was excited when I saw the news on your Instagram would be an understatement.
Absolutely love your videos and please keep up your amazing content
Excellent video, I like how you do these projects so I don’t have to. It’s a bit like a public service that stops me wondering what fire attached to an aeroplane might be like ;-). Looking forward to the next.
want to see more of your dope mini. Used to have one like that back in the day
I love both your vids on the rocket boat and this plane... It would awesome to see a rocket powered ground effect vehicle
I live for the 5 second clips of this man's car.
Did you try any designs that weren't darts? Nice to see you doing the hard work so we don't have to find out for ourselves that a rocket powered paper plane won't really work!
I think anything not a dart would only make all the issues he encountered far worse. Broader wingspan is only going to tend to collapse the wings under sudden thrust.
This guy is the future of Aviation
Awesome idea!
Man i just love your videos you are truly inspirational and hard working
I'd love to see a more streamlined and improved version of this. Maybe different stages for a longer flight?
This paper rocket reminds me my school days memories nice video Dude 👍
I'm still searching for the secret how to fold the paper perfectly xD
That was awesome! Pretty cool design, reminiscent of the powered FT giant, the motor makes it great. Cheers brah!
More different types of rocket planes please. I’m interested in seeing more.
I'd be interested in you trying different designs for stability or a weaker rocket. This is kinda like strapping the Wright Brothers plane to a fighter jet and expecting it not to disintegrate.
Love the video though
👍 yes more rocket powered planes please !
Of course it was a difficult project. I haven't even gotten past you explaining where you got the idea yet. Here's the problems I can see. Center of gravity. Center of thrust. Wings not being rigid enough. And as you've already covered, fire.
That being said I am interested in seeing this play out so I'll be watching the full thing.
I did this with a small bottle-rocket, stick removed, strapped to a paper plane placed on the handrail of my deck. It took off perfectly, caught fire with the report, and glided down on fire. I was overjoyed.
Definitely my childhood dream to put a rocket into a paper aeroplane, but I never knew how to do it! Good to see someone does :)
James, since I was a kid I taped bottle rockets to paper airplanes. The exhaust will burn the plane, and the explosive charge will mangle the plane. But the bottle rockets are so inexpensive, and the paper airplanes are easy to build!
Привет.
Я конечно не понял что тут было сказано в видео ролике, но мне понравилось то что ты что-то делаешь своими руками.
И я просто хочу пожелать тебе успехов.

So cool!
This dude could join air force at any time
Wow, that’s cool!
I like planes
I like trains
That was amazing
Awesome! Great job!
I love your videos! Keep up the great work.
Soda bulbs work great although heavy, without starting a bush fire lol. Cardboard design for plane and launcher. Hammer and nail to get it going. Just an idea for ya. Love your creativity.
Powerup toys lets you fly paper planes with your phone successfully. I'm not affiliated with them; I just happen to own one because I liked the idea very much. To be honest though; it's quite hard to control with your phone; but it does work.
Paper planes are kinda my home ground not gonna lie, the things u need to fly the planes outside are some elevons and some side fins for greater stability. The more compact the plane, the better it will fly
This enthusiastic entrepreneurial engineering-loving creative fella didn't half remind me what a jaded old git I've turned into - I shall go and hang my head in shame somewhere, ^oo^
I recommend the Carbon Flyer, it's a carbon fiber dart with propellers with a 720p camera!
I staple a penny at the C.G. of my paper airplanes within the keel fold. I also cut elevator control surfaces on the trailing edge to impart a slight pitch-up moment. When thrown by hand, these paper airplanes go through a series of gentle stalls, recovering easily from each one. The net effect is that it typically triples the free-throw range of the airplane.
Sanger glider :)
Very cool plane. I always thought about putting a rocket engine on paper plane lol
Video idea: Build a rocket with a barometer to see how high it flew and then try to make the rocket flight as high as possible
Love it, it reminds me of a Eurofighter Typhoon.
Would like to know how.
Hey James I also tried this and it worked I used slightly big motor than yours but it also glided and gone super fast.
It’s all fun and games until your paper airplane flies into a wooden shed and catches on fire and then burns down the shed
Don't give up on paper yes. You need to make a jig to ensure repeatability and make tweaks. Then use geometric features for strength. Try embossing, dimples or convolutions. Best regards Dr. Paul
nice job mate
Great video as always!
super cool
Make an EDF plane with afterburner.
Tip: Use a butane canister for the fuel and inject it into a ring made out of copper pipe with holes pointing backwards and use a toy zapper to light the fuel. Of course, use a valve or a servo to activate the fuel
Tip to avoid making a flying flame: cover the exhaust with aluminium foil and fiberglass to isolate it from the fuselage
2 words.. Rail Launch
Great Vid!!
That car was the cutest car I've ever seen😍
Very cool video :)
I would also love to see if you could make an RC paper airplane. I tried to do it once with a partially disassembled mini quad-copter based on the design by Peter Sripol, but I could never get quite enough thrust.
Need a decent bit of dihedral angle on the wings. Then roll (some yaw) stabilisation is sorted. Then hopefully your designs would glide a lot further and maybe work better with the rockets
I have an idea for rocket paper airplanes : You should put the engine under the paperairplane
Wow cool i wanna try it mini plane!
ive tried this for years with bottle rockets, never really worked but I made some with segments of straws taped to the wings and you would put the rockets in those, and they would shoot out like missiles
This is amazing broooo
Love your interesting invention
Awesome.
i like your rocket planes, it's so cool!
Great 🔥
RC paper airplane is amazing 🤩
I think angle of attack might have also been an issue on the earlier plans. The rocket motor is sitting in the bottom of the grip, which is forcing the nose of the plane down.
I love your mini 😁😁
At least it flew better than the space shuttle. 😃👍
Omg your car is amazing
That was an awesome foam board delta glider! Next time, you may wish to glue a strip of aluminum foil across the thrust line...
Alternative title: Making an aircraft shaped ICBM with miniature sizing.
Cool👏
Man I love your car. I'd love to own one in the states.
Look up Powerup Toys. Device that you attach to your paper planes to make them powered and RC from your phone (bluetooth). It's actually really fun to play around with.
Edit: two rear props, differential thrust for turning
Love ur channel
Bro you said it was not a good idea but that was the most perfect flight
Awesome, I'm building model rockets for my grandson, he's still to young to build them, but he loves watching them fly, I was just looking at using a foam glider with a rocket motor, but I like your design, any plans or specs? Thanks!
I have a PowerUp 4, works fine for the paper planes.
Nice
Subscribed for content and also for your car 😂😍
Dude that looked siiiiiiiick as a glider RC plane lol. Love ur work keep it up man. (I wanna make a glider like that now lmao)
i luv ur vids keep it up:D
I legit thought the thumbnail was a paper spade with the handle fading out of frame 🤣
There was an aeronautical engineer, from Saskatchewan I think, who had a book full of blackline masters of various paper plane designs. You might have more luck if you can find a copy of it.
Front load the paper planes they'll work fine the rocket engine is heavy right? But it's light when it's spent, so front load like way heavy nose forward then it'll work also point up relative to the trailing edge so you don't cook it
When I was a little kid, me and my brother added a 'howler' to a paper airplane, this howlers where indeed small rockets, constructed for the generation of a loud sound.
We ignited the fuse and threw the plane, it was gliding fast and stable but we feared the fuse would be to long, than suddenly the howler started to work, the plane caught speed and went higher and higher, exactly like it should have been.
Today they don't produce this howlers any more, they where like rocket without any stabilization and flew everywhere sometimes hitting persons nearby ...
How did you supply power to the servos? Im trying to figure that out for my own thing
Nice car
