  • Newport Harbor is one of the most popular fishing spots in Southern California, and for good reason - it's been producing fish for as long as it has existed!
But that popularity means it gets a lot of fishing pressure and so it really demands that you be on top of your game or you could get skunked. Newport can be tough.
I've done OK there in the past, but I've never caught more than a handful of fish on any given session until my buddy, Bassin' Rich went with me this past weekend and gave me a few tips that helped me have a twenty fish day! It really is the small things that can make a huge difference.
So lets take a look at this amazing place and find out where to go for the best action!

definitely a different environment. I've fished there only once for about 8 hours and fished the moorings for 2 of them. The moorings only produced 1 fish but when i switched to open water casting/trolling I managed 28 fish in 6 hours. very productive harbor if fished correctly.

I appreciate your quick and efficient landing of the fish you catch. Lots of guys I see videos of from float tubes and from shore keep them exposed out of the water way too long. Some guys might not like the pain of a net but your videos are a testament to how effective it can be and how it just makes the process easier. Cheers!

Thanks for the great tips! I really do enjoy watching your videos :) I usually fish at the newport jetty, watching this made me want to get on the water! I plan to purchase sea eagle packfish 7 inflatable boat , hopefully see you out there,

Really enjoy the videos. Do you ever come north to Ventura county? We have some great water. If you ever do you'd have a buddy right here.

Awesome video! I'll definitely have to try fishing there when I get a float tube later this year. By the way, what is the rod and reel that you used throughout the video?

The rod is a Phenix Maxim 72M and the reel is a Shimano Sienna 2500. I like the sensitivity and backbone of the carbon-graphite rod, but they don't take kindly to being stepped on or deal with rough handling as well as a fiberglass rod. It's a trade-off.

Thanks for responding! I'm trying to find a good saltwater setup and something like that would probably work well. Keep up the good work!
