    Good honest review as usual Richard! $159 sounds like a really good deal to me. I would like Meike to create some longer lenses like a fast 135mm or 180mm lens!

      yes a 135mm f/2 or something similar would be amazing!

    Could be great a comparison of some mirrorless 50mm f1.8 for full frame (Meike, Viltrox, Yongnuo, TTartisan will launch one too in the next months, Sony, Nikon, etc)

    Good review. Really helps the confidence of budget shooters as the range of 3rd party Z lenses is expanding, and your reviews really help the Nikon Z user community.

    Yet another reason why Nikon makes for a better camera buy. You have choices. Thank you Nikon for allowing those who are starting out to start with cheaper lenses. Unlike Canon who cripple and deny their users of cheaper options when starting out. With the L Mount eco system building such great momentum.. Nikon seem to get it... I hope those Canon cants change their tune soon. Thanks for a great video!

      And Nikon has cool E Mount to Z Mount adapters. Someday I might pick up a Nikon body.

    Wow. That seems like some really impressive image quality. I’ve already got the Sony 55mm f/1.8, so I have no need for another 50ish lens, and I prioritize compactness anyway. But if someone asked me for a recommendation, I’d urge them to give this a try. Seems like it’ll much be better than the Sony 50mm f/1.8, which doesn’t have a lot going for it IMO.

    Thanks for the excellent review, Richard! How would you say this lens compares to the Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.8 (Nikon Z) in terms of autofocus and image quality?

    Thanks for your review. I'm putting a budget kit together for podcast interviews with Sony ZV-E10s. If this was locked off in a controlled 2-person interview environment, how well do you feel AF would perform?

      I haven't done that with this lens, but i feel it should be good enough as it's really not demanding at all.

    Hello Mr. Wong
    Please let me know if the Meike 85mm 1.8 AF in combination with Nikon Z50 are suitable for sport photography. I need an AF lens for sport, soccer, in low light conditions. I hope this kind of third party lenses are suitable because my budged is really limited. Thanks for your videos.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 місяців тому +1

      i don't have a Z50 to test, but if you are talking about sports in low light, Z50 even with Nikon Z 50 1.8 S would be struggling a bit if you demand very high success rate.
      Sports in low light is one of the hardest and most demanding type of photography.

    I really appreciate your work and effort on these videos, and being active on DPR. I think you should be using an Nikon ZF. Expeed6 autofocus isn't great to start with. I've used adapted e-mount lenses with great AF results on the Z8/ZF. It is my opinion that Expeed7 reduces the downsides of using third party lenses on the z-system.
    I THINK closeup comparisons need to be done at 100% zoom, or you'll get a rendering of the 200% view. I think that might have caused the CA in the f-stop comparisons on the Nikon. I'd have been interested in the other tests being compared side-by-side as well. So many people are talking about "clinical" versus "character" these days. I'll personally add character in post, but you can't add IQ. The 50-S images are brighter with more contrast and better blacks.
    I'm surprised to see a WB difference in a mirrorless camera as the camera should be correcting for this. This would lead me to test 5,000k and auto-WB with A0/A1/A2 settings. I also get sharper results than your examples from my z-mount F4S zoom lenses. My testing with S primes at F4 is visually identical. I'd have added a segment with corrected images. For a $200 50mm f1.8, I'd add a few steps to my workflow. ;)
    I think the S primes are physically too long as it is, and I'm not comfortable tossing a few in my pocket as I did with the 1.8G's. I wouldn't mind heavier and wider designs as they would be nicer for manual focusing as well. When I go with a fast third party lens, I'm going to want f1.4.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 місяців тому

      hey @skyrunr, thanks for watching and your detailed feedback. i would LOVE to use a Zf to do the test. I bought and still have the Nikon Df so Zf is a camera i really want to get. Unfortunately I already spent a lot of money upgrading my Fuji to a XH2 and also a few other upgrades for my channel. So I'm not really in a financial position to upgrade my Nikon body yet. But yes this is my big thing I will want to upgrade, as you said the Z 6's autofocus is really a bit dated now. I just need to find the money to do that :)
      and regarding 200% zoom, i do that because i noticed a large percentage of my viewers are watching my reviews on a phone or tablet. So even 100% zoom is not enough to show the difference on those small screens. That's why I do 200% zoom, hopefully it would allow my viewers to see the difference in sharpness/image quality.

    • @skyrunr
      @skyrunr 5 місяців тому

      @@TheRealRichardWong That makes sense, but if they are on a smaller screen anyway, I'm not so sure it would matter. I'd go 100% full screen and toggle, or better yet include links to the sample images.
      We need to get your view count up and Patreon "buy me coffee" going. As nice as it was, the ZF form factor wasn't for me, and I couldn't setup the buttons how I wanted. Especially without ANY recall settings, banks, or modes. So I'm anxiously waiting for the next Z, FX or DX.
      I really like my A7CII's feature and value. I'm not so sure the Z6III (rumors) will displace it. I hope I'm wrong.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 місяців тому +1

      @@skyrunr haha don't worry about buy me a coffee but yes please help me get my view count and sub number up. One of my UA-cam goal is to get to 100k sub. But I have a feeling I may retire from UA-cam before I can reach that goal. I'm also waiting to see what the next Nikon Z FX camera is! But the A7CII is also quite tempting!

      The Meike is slightly sharper in the center at f/1.8 but from f/2.8 onwards they really perform equally (at least I couldn't see any difference). This is actually a very good verdict for the Meike as the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is widely considered a great lens.

      Maybe easier design constraints. It weighs 382g which isn't that bad. For the price $160USD and how close it gets to the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8S which is an excellent lens, i'd glady buy it.

    Entering the era of mirrorless cameras with larger lens mounts and more robust bodies, why do manufacturers focus so much on developing f/1.8 lenses? Many people take pride in the excellent quality of such lenses, but honestly, it seems like a lack of progress.
    So tired of seeing these 1.8 series…..

    • @AdamKSmith-bv3dw

      I would guess these manufacturers would love to create AF 1.2 lenses but it would be really challenging technically especially for full frame lens. Give them a few years I think we will start to see some crazy autofocus lenses from the Chineses manufacturers.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 місяців тому +2

      It takes time. Most Chinese lens manufacturers are in the transition phase from manual focus to autofocus lens. There are a lot of technical challenges But I think in the near future we will see some more aggressive designs from companies like Meike. They already releaesd a AF 85 1.4 just few months ago.

    For some reason, the Meike one's image was way warmer than any other lenses I've ever used, every picture I took got a yellow tint to it, and judged by other user's review in China, it's not uncommon, very annoying problem, I suspect there's a design flaw.
