I clicked on this video not knowing what it would be, I realized I already have this exact shortcut set and use it every time I edit. Can confirm, it does make your editing 10x faster.
one of the most essential things any editor should know, been using it for 20 years now (it´s an avid thing, that luckily also works in resolve), also check out the „extend“ function in avid, the other big time saver, not sure what it is called in resolve, but it works the same way. (trims a clip to a marker) oh, did I mention „replace edit“? thats the 3rd one you cannot live without once you know it :)
Like how you went a step further to unbind the old commands. Never really wanted to do that because I didn’t even know what they meant, and I didn’t wanna unbind anything important. But this helps clear things up. Thanks.
OF COURSE! It's a great shortcut BUT, here's my ultimate tip related to this... On the MX Mouse 3, you set these shortcuts to be mapped on the gesture button. When you press the gesture button and swipe right, it executes the W action, and pressing the gesture button and swiping to the left, it executes the Q shortcut. I don't know if I'm clear but it's a great time saver
Jamie thank you so much! Your instructions were thorough. I watched a few other videos and they left out essential steps and I could not get it to work until your video!
Hey Jamie, this is something that was a carry over from the old days from PP, I used to always jump to the Q and W out of habit. One thing thought though to make this a little simpler for people that don't use the keyboard customization is when the active key ( on the left ) is found - click on the command and it will automatically find the command detail on the right ( where it is assigned ) . Even if there are two of them assigned like your Q and W - you click on the one you want to drill down to and it jumps straight to it. So need to search for it in the right column. Good choice, a lot of people are unaware of this and I think even if you came from Premiere that Premiere called the same action something else, so that info is great for those people as well.
I use my mouse in my left hand (though I'm right-handed) and mapped the 1, 2, and 3 keys on my number pad to be ripple left, cut, ripple right respectively and 4, 5, and 6 to mimic J, K, and L.
Yes. A couple more tips like this and I can feel a lot more comfortable zipping through an editing project. (I don't do a lot, just every once in awhile... would like to edit more.)
Actually I took Sam kolder davinci resolve course and his keyboard shortcuts are amazing, I actually didnt used davinci before his course I was a premier guy. So I cant imagine how people use davinci without figuring out these shortcuts. Btw. It is Q- TRIM BEFORE PLAYHEAD W- SPLIT THE CLIP (alternative of Ctrl+B) E- TRIM AFTER PLAYHEAD S- Ripple delete
Thanks, Jamie This was the first time I was able to assign the keyboard shortcuts, All the ones I've watched missed your second step of getting rid of the the previous shortcut assigned. Also as JimBobinso-colors was mentioned you can just click the key to show up the previous assigned shortcut .
haha, same here i was thinking, hat am i missing and rewatching videos. i have set mine slightly differnt, i have set Q to delete all on the left W to just split the clip and then E to delete all the clip to the right. Great video Jamie and have learned a lot from your channel over the few months
When you install Resolve, it asks if you're familiar with any other programs, so I selected Pro Tools. This function is mapped to A and S in the Pro Tools (command focus) mode.
Have you tried locking your audio tracks? I often trim my footage to the music I'm going to use, so I just lock the audio clip to avoid cutting it up. There is a padlock icon by every track name you can use to do this.
@@brandonmccann8893 Thanks, I lock my audio tracks also. I just found about this style of cutting footage in this video. Was wondering how it would to a complex timeline, because I haven't tried this in a new project. Will see how it goes.
Hi Jamie, nice tip. Can you please tell why is the Alt+S shortcut key not working to add subtitles on the edit page? What is the solution if you have found any?
I would like to place the playhead between two clips and have a function that shifts all clips to the right of the timeline such that I have more space to work with, can that be done somehow

Hell yes! So glad to hear that. It's made my editing way faster for sure...
Happend to me as well. I also use "A" and "D" to delete the past and forward parts of a clip without eliminating the space between. Sometimes helps.
this is a great tip! I also mapped control + Q and control + W for Trim Start and Trim End, to trim without ripple the timeline
Nice to see you again Jamie. 1
You too!!
Video kept showing up on my recommended, never bothered to click until today. I will never doubt you ever again wise editing man
Haha thanks man!!!
Awesome. Finally got it. It wasn't working for me till I followed your instructions. THANK YOU.
Great to hear!

I’ve seen a lot of people say that. I actually got this tip from my buddy who came from PP as well.

It is
Q- TRIM BEFORE PLAYHEAD
W- SPLIT THE CLIP (alternative of Ctrl+B)
E- TRIM AFTER PLAYHEAD
S- Ripple delete
that is actually better than the Peter Mckinnon 1 I just watched from his editor! TY
instantly assigned
Thanks Jamie, you have saved me hours of work as i can now assign some quick keys.
No problem 👍
If any other Fennomenals have any other keyboard short cuts they want to share definitely comment below! Cheers!
Fennomenals? I have not visited your channel for a long time. so I guess it is the name you gave to your fans.
oh i get it 'Fenn'-omenals
yeah, I like using Q for toggling the source/record monitors. Use it all the time.
Thanks so much for this Jamie 🙏🏻🤟
No problem Gary!
classic top n tail technique :D already assigned this months ago.

More please!!
Wow
Ya use this exact shortcut with the same keys! Think I got it from Premiere when I made the switch!
thank you so much!
That would be helpful!
Do you know the name of the configuration to be able to customize it to move between different timelines?
🤯Da faq!! I feel like my life is a lie! This will make cutting sooooo much easier. Thanks for sharing!
Haha no problem 😉
Ótimo, parabéns pelas informações.
Question: what about audio? When timeline gets complicated with multiple video tracks and audio tracks. Will Q and W mess up other tracks?
Have you tried locking your audio tracks? I often trim my footage to the music I'm going to use, so I just lock the audio clip to avoid cutting it up. There is a padlock icon by every track name you can use to do this.

Broo thank you so much
you can just click the command in the active key window and save yourself the search step.
Howcome for me when I try and change it to another key I get an error box that says "Media Previous" and clicking the assign button does nothing!
Thankyou ❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊
Hey had a question. are most of the edits you make tutorials on available on davinci resovle without paying for the extra studio n effects?
Some are some are not.
Oh, also I have a question. Will we get more VFX videos? It’ll be very nice
Yea! Anything you want to see in particular? DM me on Instagram 💪🏽
@@JamieFenn okie. But I don’t have instagram, so I’m just going to wait for something 😂😂😂.

alt+Y
Man I forgot the names😂 of what button i have assigned. Apparantly I have assigned Q- Start to Playhead , W-Split, E- End to play head

You're welcome!
I dont know why dafult shortcut is not even working on mine , the end to play ahead is not working.
I Love you now lol
i think your used nicklas color grade luts nehh 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nope - my luts. From my latest Fenn X lut collection. #5 to be exact 👍🏼
I would've really appreciate knowing if i was wasting my time before clicking on a video, not during, please be clear about what the video is about

True.
Nice are going to credit Casey Faris? I mean you copied his video .. ua-cam.com/video/Lpg20Fe7d3Y/v-deo.html
You can read forums online about this method online way before Casey. Sorry to break the news to ya
