Road trips with an EV are more of a challenge than most enthusiasts are willing to admit. It takes planning and one needs to build in an ample time buffer. I drive a Tesla in Southern California which theoretically is the ideal EV charging environment. But if I need to stop for a charge I’ve learned to take my sweet time and not feel rushed. Where EVs really shine is in home charging. Well over 90% of my charging is done at night in my home when the electricity rates are lowest. I don’t miss weekly visits to gas stations and paying the outrageous price per gallon.
Welcome to Finland Kris!
I am a big fan of your channel. I hope you enjoy your stay in Finland.
Good thing that you made it to the ferry on time. Finns and Swedes travel a lot on ferries between countries, and this may not have been taken into account that even a Norwegian gets lost here in this corner of the world? On a ship, you should always upgrade the cabin to a better one. The cheapest cabins are uncomfortable and located in bad places on the ship. e.g. under the car deck or next to restaurants. The cabin should be booked as far up and forward of the ship as possible.
The food is usually decent and I recommend trying the lunch or dinner buffet , as well as the buffet breakfast in the morning. Have a nice rest of the trip.
Nice, we almost met. I happen to visit in Turku again. This time traveled by plane (and bus from Helsinki). But I have been with my Polestar 2 here and also charged it on the exact same charging spot.
I know that Recharge is your sponsor, but let me mention that charging in Finland is cheap either at ABC or K-Lataus. Both take just 33 Ct/kWh. ABC uses Kempower and hence is very reliable.
So glad you made it, God bless you Kris ❤
It's Turku in English and a lot of other languages, it's Åbo in swedish and norwegian.
Thank you Kris for your amazing video and showing us Finland and Helsinki, hope you show us some more. Weird why the charger at McDonald's wasn't Kempower as your in the capital of Kempower land. ;) Looking forward to the rest of your Finland trip coming soon.
I got stuck on a long road trip in Kapellskär (Finnlines) in the cold of october on my motorcycle, missed the ferry. Drove back quite long to the nearest service station where a the clerk let me spend the night with him on his night shift. That saved me, took the ferry in the morning. Just meant that there's some really nice people out there.
Nice to see you in here in Helsinki❤
You need to swing out the cable arm on the top of the charger on the one with the McD livery on it. The cable is more then long enough.
Kris, you never use the i button on the Kempower dispensers. By pressing the i you get more information like the amperage and even a charging curve. 🤷♂️ Maybe you can give it a try next time.
It's nice that you share the full adventure.... including the ups and downs... now showing on the "Kris Rifa Reality EV Tours" UA-cam channel.... Stay safe, Tim 😂
Glad you enjoyed the trip and video!
Welcome to Helsinki. Have a nice time!
Thanks!
Welcome to Finland, Kris!! 👍
Hello Chris,
That was an exciting experience hoping that you would arrive at the ferry on time. And then with only 8% left in the battery. You said that the Volvo has one of the best route planners. I had a strange experience with my XC40 on the way to Copenhagen. The route planner wanted to recharge again after 47 minutes, while there was still more than 250 km of range left. We decided to skip this stop with the expectation that the navigation would correct this with a charger further along the route. But he didn't. He kept sending us back until 80km past the charging point!? Then stopped, canceled navigation and entered it again and then there was a charging point further away. A Tesla charger, but that doesn't matter as long as it produces power.
It is a very good navigation system but it could be better. Have fun in Finland!
Thanks a lot for sharing! A thought - does this one has matrix lights on headlights or just led lights? If only LED does any improvement ha been done compared to older generation of XC40?
As my old man used to tell me: “Planning and preparation, prevents piss poor performance”.
Yes needs planning but I would double check we're the ferries are even if i had a diesel
I have just check with ABRP with my 2018 Tesla model 3 AWD, starting with 90% state of charge. Only 3 stops to charge (and rest !) : 14 minutes (coffee time), 37 minutes (lunch time !), 14 minutes (coffee time). So I would not have had to plan at all.
The XC40 Recharge looks good in Sweden. I skipped the XC40 in lieu of the Audi Q4 mainly due to the 2nd row space (my grandparents are old) but I quite like the Volvo. I only wished our charging network is as good as the Nordics in Canada.
Liked the video and pleased you are covering less exotic cars. Keep up the good work.
It will show amps when hooked up to an AC charger
I think you’d have had a better experience going with Tallink/Silja Line. Good job on reaching the ferry. The nicest ferries btw are the ones going directly between Stockholm and Helsinki.
Kris then alpha tronic charger haven then movable arms and you have enough length for then Kabel.
There is also another Ferry-line, maybe try them 🙂
Missing Helsinki so much
How are your long trip in xc40 vs Polestar2?
The amperage during charging is only shown when charging AC🙂
Welcome to Helsinki. Would be nice if you had some time to explore the city better :)
Thanks! Leaving tomorrow, but will definitely be back soon!
Why you wear a jacket in the car when driving? especially when you're driving a long trip? The car has heated seats right?
Love your videos . Was there no charger at the boat ?
5 years ago the ferry operators were a lot more into providing charging and planning for future with it. In the last couple of years they have been not that much interested in that.
When will you do a review and test of the Fisker Ocean?
Late this week! Hopefully I'll get the video up this weekend :)
21:44 you seem to have parked the car in a weird position or the cables on that charger are a bit interestingly set :D
As much as I like the car, this video is the perfect commercial for the internal combustion engine.
How did you find the power and driving experience of the new rwd single motor?
I share my experience at the end of the video :)
verry strange with the smoke in sweden we have a ban of smoking att Such places but mabe the boad it Finnsih flagged so it is alowed to smoke.
It's quite impressive to manage that 180 km (2 hour) detour to Kapellskär! 😅
Btw Kapellskär is pronounced Kapellskær.
Is Viking Glory like Morning Glory?
🤣🤣
you will complain when the degree scale drops to -10 and you have to wait hours for even a fast charger with a maximum power of 35kw.
took this for a week drive, it's bad for road trip. city drive more suitable , as it really hungry for battery than my Model Y by 10-15%
Vikingline har gått från kapellskär för kanske 30 år sedan till Åbo (Turku) ...hetter ju Viking skandinavia..i kapellskär..😂
Kirsi Immonen, Paula Savonen and Kris's brother...
I wish volvo added the Polestar console in the xc40 or the one from xc30
I wish that to. If some body make a center display retfofit upgrade, it would be nice
Polestar2?? The Polestar 2 center console has basically no storage and idiotic placement of cup holder. The worst thing about the Polestar 2 is the console.
Storage ? who cares, the fact is, the console for the xc40 is stoneage compared to Polestars and others.@@ulf5738
let me just rephrase that i mean center screen, i can see that you probably mean the storage space at the gear shifter?@@ulf5738
May be cloggyable means bigger center display?
This charging cable is a litlebit too short…. You are about 1,5 meters away from the charger, man🤣🤣🤣.
I'm sure you'd get some of your money back for the room being smoky, shouldn't happen.
Good video thank you. I am considering electric car now was a second or maybe third car in the family. but to have it as a main car ( leaving in continental Europe, where I can easily cover yours 1000 km within 8-10 hours on a fossil car, watching your challenges, your extensive planning, your time spent on charging, for me is absolutely useless waste of time with all respect
Turku=Åbo på svenska..
AndroidAutomotive is so bad at routeplaning and there were zero improvments in the last year. Meanwhile VW, BMW, MB even Hyundai/Kia have done their homework and are way better now…
I will not get another car with Android Automotive.
are you high? 🤣🤣
Being late, this why i do not like EV's or google being part of the car. Diesel XC70 for me ........
That diesel isn´t going to help you if you go to the wrong direction...
What a silly thing to say ….what has being in an EV got to do with being late? 🤦♂️
That must be why you watch EV videos.
That is one ugly vehicle, lol
