I read in Rolling Stone magazine YEARS ago that one of their influences is KING CRIMSON. Go figure...
Check out Sweat by Tool. It's 1st on their 1st album cos Tools are worthless without Sweat. It's short, but really sweet, and it hints at everything they've grown into.
Also, Wheel is a band formed by a bunch of guys who love Tool. They're very similar, but still unique. Farewell is their best song, imo. Definitely worth a listen
When you ask "Danny what are you doing"? at ~ 17:50 on the video (~10:30 on the actual track), he's hitting a closed high hat cymbal. You can see this on some of the live Tool videos on youtube.

I'm not the biggest TOOL fanatic in the world but like their progressive side. I've heard some TOOL fans say they thought the latest album is just more of the same but for me it's the most interesting and good for multiple listens. This album is incredible.
This won them their 4th Grammy!
Descending off this album is the ultimate dream ride. Song will actually make u float off into another dimension, for real! 😜

I totally agree with not having lyrics or a video pulled up during a first time listen! The first listen is for the feeling and the flow, you can always analyze later which every fan of Tool certainly does. Glad you loved this!

I consider this to be Adam’s song, and the others just fill the space. This is some of his finest guitar work. 🌀
In the '90s I heard him explain his approach as "trying to complement Maynard's vocals on every song," and I think they got to this song and said, "nah, dude, this one's all you."

@@sevsimo Yes, You must see them live if you can, I missed them just a couple months ago at the Rockville festival here in Daytona Florida, I really want to see them one last time as I know they might stop playing at any time, These Guys are all around 60 and are bound to retire soon and Maynard is a very busy man with 2 bands and a winery, used to have 3 bands going... I promise you will love TOOL LIVE ,they are just as good live... I truly hope I can see them one more time before it is to late..
Always fun watching Tool fans hearing 7empest for the first time, the definition of freaking EPIC! They outdid themselves on this track; this song is like the culmination of everything they've done since Opiate, a whole new level unlocked, just incredible

I have enjoyed some great music in my 62 years of living, but nothing absolutely blew me away like this song did since I first listened to Achilles Last Stand (Led Zeppelin) in a friend's dorm room in 1980. It's that good. It's wonderful to see a similar reaction from you.
Absolutely love it, you get it. The journey, the guitar, the drums, the lyrics, the meditation, the melody, all of it.
That is one of the most complex compositions that Tool has ever created. Amazing!
Tool Army grunt here. Even if people dont know Tool or dont think they will like it, they all eventually come around to appreciate it. Especially since 99% of the crap that is considered music nowadays, will be long forgotten not long after its heard.
They play it just as perfectly live if not better.

Great reaction! I agree with you, tool has to be experienced with your third eye on the first listen. Close your eyes and feel the music take you on a journey. After you become fully infused with the music, the lyrics will come around and your mind will be blown again. All the members are masters of their craft and that includes MJK. The lyrics can be just as powerful as the music.

Saw these guys live in Brisbane the second time they'd ever played this song live. Incredible
7empest gave me chills the first time I heard it. Reminded me so much of the Opiate and Aenima days. Just a really ballsy track! Also some of the very best guitar parts Adam has ever composed. He had already set the bar as high as it could go, but still managed to raise it even further.
When u said I'm ready at intro, I was like lol no your not.... haha! No shower and haircut can prep a man for this golden song. The instrumental 3 quarter into "invincible" is a moment I look forward too seeing your reaction too

Listening to 7empest for the first time, I genuinely felt like I travelled forward in time. I you had held a gun to my head and asked me how much time elapsed during the song, I would have sworn on my life it was 5 minutes. They somehow erased 10 minutes from my life. It was honestly a surreal feeling when I saw that the song was 15 minutes long. Outstanding work of art.
The middle instrumental section gives me such fundamental chills. One of the greatest, powerful, grooves recorded. The nuances of what Justin and Danny are doing playing around each other with Adam laying down just some of the sickest guitar leads on top is phenomenal. You should listen to Descending off the same album.
This has the feel of Undertow, but with the progression of their talent! ❤️🤘

This album was incredible, it was a nice surprise after so long without new music. Truly shows their mastery even more, can’t wait to see your experience with them and your excitement too
This song gave me almost as much joy as Wings for Marie in terms of Maynard’s growth. He used to be so bitter, even towards his mother. He always saw the flaws, and knew how to point the finger. Amazing artist. He vehemently opened himself up to his “shadow” and vulnerably became an outlet. The problem with that, channeling anger, resentment, fear… you become a slave to it. Maynard however was able to spiritually discern Lucy, and channel his anger against the evil one, in a just way.
That’s is an incredibly well constructed comment; concise and insightful. If you aren’t already a writer, you should start.

When I am young, I am naive. I do not have a frame of reference to judge the world, so my judgment is nothing more than a reflection of what I see. I see that the world is horrible.

Understanding that I am flawed, it is solely within me to overcome that which I can control, which are my own flaws and my flaws alone. I cannot change others for that is the essence of humanity - we are shaped by the world but are uniquely gifted with the ability to re-shape ourselves despite the world, and by re-shaping ourselves, perhaps we can show others that by focusing inward we can reflect a better world outward.
Don’t forget that the world is a shitty place. Because it does not change simply because you want it to. No matter what one may do, or how hard one may struggle, there is only power over oneself. So you believe you have mastered reality and are a god in control of all within you? How about I kill your mother after letting her suffer for over 27 years?
I thought I was strong. I was tested and I failed. There is no hope for me, for I am old and tired and weak. But there is hope for tomorrow, because the only hope for humanity is found in the spark of wonder within a child, free from the harshness of the world as manifested by the behavior of other people. The world is greedy and mean and dirty, but there are some who want more. I am past the point of physically fighting all of the demons of humanity, but my voice is strong and I will share my story so that it might spark optimism and hope in those not yet consumed by the world.
To me, that’s Tool.

I swear there are little fragments of riffs from other songs in this, like debris in a high wind speed storm. But almost like not the real riff but edging to reminiscent of it, or the feeling, or tone, or something. Like a good warm-up and pedal preset sound check song, haha.

At the 15:26 part of this video, towards the end of the long section of heavy, roiling bass and drums, Danny hits the ride cymbal and lightens the whole mood. Such a fantastic bit of composition, and one of my favorite pieces of music by Tool.
