Remembering the departed on All Souls Day
Goa's history is marked by several tragic events that claimed the lives of many. On All Souls Day, we remember these somber chapters from Goa's timeline. From the Spanish Flu epidemic to the sinking of a ship and a tragic bus accident, these events serve as reminders of Goa's past as we honour the departed.
Spanish Flu
The deadly Spanish flu pandemic gripped the land of Goa, claiming countless lives and devastating families and communities. In the village of Raia and on the hill of Salvador do Mundo, crosses were erected as testaments to the lives lost.
Tragedy of the Launch
On December 3, 1901, a launch, carrying around 160 passengers, capsized in the Mandovi River close to the capital city. As the river swallowed the vessel, 75 bodies were recovered, while six others were never found. A cross was built to honour the lives lost.
Calvim Bus Tragedy
In 2021, the Calvim bus tragedy occurred when a mini bus plunged into the Calvim River, resulting in the tragic deaths of six people, including four school-going girls. Today, a memorial plaque at the bridge commemorates those who lost their lives.
These memorials invite all who encounter them to pause, reflect, and honor the memories of those who have passed. In the face of tragedy, the spirit of the Goan people remains resilient, united by their shared history and the bonds of community forged in sorrow.
