You need to think OUTSIDE of the box. Don't try to finish them by sanding and polishing, try coating them with more resin instead. The ones encapsulated are just fine, so just encapsulate them ALL. If you REALLY want to turn or finish them, then mold them in a smaller container, and once molded, put it in a larger container, and surround the lot with more plain resin.
@@juliebaker6969 took the words right out my mouth. I was going to say that's how I do acrylic nails, when I'm doing a design I don't want to buff through and ruin I encapsulate it in clear.
You was teach me how to speak English. Thanks nick zametti :))
@@juliebaker6969 agreed. Nothing wrong with an inner and outer layer of plain resin to encapsulate the whole shootin' match. Throw in a block of woos in the bottom you might even be able to turn it on the lathe. Just a thought
Nick for your next project, you should take resin and put them in side the balloons and put different colors of resin in the balloons and pour resin around that.
Just a idea 😉
Hey Nick, next time you do something like this with balloons, after your 1st resin pour with your piece inside to keep the bowl shape, do a second thinner resin layer on the outside of the bowl and the inside of the bowl to get all your balloons coated, and then you can clean it up cuz all the balloons are encapsulated
That was my thought too
Great idea but he can't help himself. He is a compulsive over-sander. Every project.
@@jjcud I can relate to that (dealing with my own failing in that manner with a kayak I'm fixing for a friend). But I don't think over-sanding is the issue here. The balloons are immediately under the surface, no amount of sanding can be done. I agree with Betty Anne Mc - after the first pour, suspend the balloon bowl in another slightly larger bowl to get a coating of resin on the outside, with plenty of room to sand. Can do the same with the inside of the balloon bowl by coating with quick curing resin; a couple of layers. That will leave plenty of room to sand and will give the effect of the balloons being suspended "somehow" inside the bowl.
Guess I should've read the comments before commenting, you have same idea I was thinking to fix it 🙃
@@peteygonemadarts4765 great minds think similarly.. 👍👍
My daughter said “isn’t floating to the bottom called sinking?” 🤣
😊😂
Yeah, like Buzz Lightyear falls with style.
schooled lol
Does that change in the southern hemisphere? ;-)
Float to the bottom, sink to the top 😅
What if you put resin inside a balloon, cure that, and then put the balloon inside more resin? Or, fill the balloon with colored resin, cure it a little bit and then pop it inside clear resin and cure that?
That would be cool
I was thinking the same thing. Multiple balloons with different color resin in each.
Yesssss. Fill a bunch with resin. Then set them all in resin and turn them into a pot. 🤣
I wonder in they would hold their tension...?
Ooooooo that's a blooming good idea
I was just thinking the same thing!
That suspended in a bigger resin bowl would look cool
Thats my thinking also. It will look so amazing that way.
I was thinking this same thing. Do it Nick!!! Save the project
That's what I thought too
Yes, Nick, it is salvageable. Though, I'm not sure that you'll be able to put it in your pressure cooker. It already was almost too big.
Exactly what I was going to say. Oh please do that, Nick. When in doubt more resin🤣
Could you paint on a couple coats of resin let that cure then sand and finish the new layers leaving a small protective coat between resin and balloon?
Was thinking the same now
I was wondering the same thing the whole time & was waiting for him to come to the same conclusion.
works kinda.... yes your correct... but any imperfections, are locked in the first layer, forever more!!
I was thinking along the same lines. Essentially, you just need to have enough of the resin that no balloons poke through, even after necessary shaping/polishing operations. 🤔 That said, resin's not exactly cheap so I can understand why "just add more resin" may not be an option. 🤷♀️
literally i said that word for word
Could you coat the bowl with a good layer of resin or submerge it in a bigger container (maybe 2 bigger bowls like you did with this part), fill it with resin, and then take off the excess to leave 1 cm or so, then sand & shine that up? I bet you could try that with fresh balloons in a smaller project. What about an inflated balloon shape piece of resin filled with balloons? You could make a wooden stand for it and stick it on a wire to make it look like a helium balloon on a string. 🎈
Nick's imagination is really ballooning out of control.. 😊
Nick, have you ever thought about DRYER LINT in resin? Wait! Hear me out.
I often will have light loads and alternating darks loads with some red towels thrown in on occasion. My dryer lint ends up looking like strata in the walls of the Grand Canyon. You could just keep adding layers until you have enough.
Yesss this would actually be cool!!
@@_im_jess___ I was thinking that it would end up looking like a "soft-edge micarta"
Like candy floss effect
Uhm while I think this would look cool. Emptying the lint screen between loads is better for your dryer and prevents dryer fires. Everyone thinks it takes a lot of lint to catch but it doesn’t. Sorry lost someone very dear this way.
@@TheRebeLLynn I worked Trauma in a major Level I trauma center and you are correct. I usually empty after each load or two. I have seen some people who must do 20 loads between cleanings. My somewhat truncated description did not make it clear that I did the stacking...and not the lint trap. Thank you for catching me on that.
PSA - We all check our lint traps, but how many of us check to dryer hose? Next time that you have a load drying, go to the vent outlet and put your hand there. Feel heat and good airflow? If not it may be time to clean that out.
Now do an inflated balloon in resin. I’d love to see that
That's what I was wondering!
I'd think it'd pop due to the fact that resin gets hot while it cures, and heat causes air to expand which means the air inside the balloon would expand.
@@TiBunCosplay what if you didn't inflate it to capacity? 🤔
I'd think the vaccum effect of the curing machine would also effect the air space inside a balloon as well. Consider what a vacuum does to marshmallows?
Maybe putting a liquid inside a balloon would mitigate it a bit?
Fill balloons with colored ink - even if they break, would be colorful !
You could try filling new water balloons with various amounts of resin, putting them into a mold shaped such that you won't need to finish the exterior, and pouring rain around the filled balloons.
Then you could drill out a cavity in the center, install a light fixture, and attach it to a wooden base you turned on the lathe.
I think you'd end up with a pretty funky water balloon lamp while avoiding the exposed balloon problem.
That would look awesome. Kind of like stained glass effect.
I loved ‘NickCam’ 😂😂 Could you put the bowl in a slightly larger bowl on the outside, slightly smaller bowl on the inside and then add more resin to seal the balloons to the point where you can sand it and finish it?? Loadsa luv ❤️❤️
Next video: "What happens when you put a broken green plastic bowl in resin?"
Like it!
My thoughts exactly!
It may not be perfect, but I still like it. I love how colorful it is and can think of a few things to use it for.
This is one of the reasons I love your channel! You aren't afraid to try new and different things AND you share them with us whether it worked out not! Thank you for sharing your projects with us, Nick! ♥️
Me: time for bed
YT: Yo. It's 1 AM on a Friday. Get to watching the great Nick.
Me: oh my. That's right. Thx, YT.
Hahaha me too expect it’s midnight where I am
1:14 AM here :) Had to come watch this before going to sleep
Same. We must be in the same time zone☺️
Me too!
It's 3:49 am!! in the USA!! 😮 Supposed to be sleeping but why not watch Nick .....
Would it be possible to fill a rubber glove with resin and actually have it harden? I was thinking how cool it'd be to have a resin hand lol.
It would be better to cast your hands in a softer, squishy material, then you pour resin. I think Bobby Duke Arts did something similar.
Love the new reverse camera - always a showman Nick, oftentimes it's hard to remember you're a fine craftsman as well but it's hard to forget that when one sees the fruits of your labours. Peace!
Anyone else see this as a really cool hanging lamp shade 🤷♀️
Yes! Loving that idea! 👍🏼👍🏼😱❤️❤️
When he was making it I saw a lampshade. I've been looking for an unusual one for my kitchen, it has given me ideas. Wont use balloons, even tho it looks fab.
Yes! @NickZametti please do this!? 🤔
Yes I am
Could you mix up some resin and paint it on layer by layer then sand it? Similar to a ca finish on a pen?
You can totally save this. The colors are beautiful. My son loves the "pachow" sound when you put on your gloves. Thank you for making us smile.
I have never been this early.🤣
Right me either
It may not have had the desired finish you wanted, but it still does look pretty funky
Could drizzling a thin layer of resin over the outside cover the balloons enough for you to then try sanding it?
Couldn't you encase it in more resin to create a thick enough layer to sand smooth? Maybe that's in the "too hard basket", I don't know🤷♀️.
There's a cup turner you can get - meant for turning insulated coffee cups whilst pouring a resin coating onto the surface for a cool resin/glitter/whatever you want finish. You could use your lathe in the same way, keeping it spinning veeeeeerrrrrrry slowly while the resin you "paint" on cures (use a quick cure resin). I think this could work well for this bowl to give you a smooth finish. As a long-time fan, I'd love to see you give it a go!
Although it didn't turn out as planned, it was definitely a learning experience! Haha. It was very fun and creative!! Always love watching your videos. You make me laugh, and that's a great bonus!! 🤗 Happy belated birthday and Father's day!!
Fill and coat depressions with clear until level with rest. Easy fix. Rough sanding! But easily salvaged. Its a pretty piece. Can alter colors as well with others. Flat fill balloons first then put inside more resin. Options are limitless. Great project.
Nick, next time try to make a 👉 Charcoal Epoxy Resin? 👈
Oh my goodness Mr Nick who would have come up water balloons and resin only you would come up that and it’s just perfect just like the lego guitar I love it awesome job
how about this:
stabilised charcoal and shredded tinfoil in clear resin?
maybe add a bit of microwaved red highlighter fluff?
I think if you ever revisited it would be interesting to partially fill the balloons with resin and then try and hold them in a odd/unique shape while it cures. Seems like you could make it look like a balloon mid throw or something
Curious how many other people thought: “Oh god, what is Nick doing now?” when the read the video title?
i was thinking 'oh the balloons aren't going to stay in the resin once he starts sanding' and 'they're probably going to gunk on the machine' but you made it look so good, what a fun piece
Nick playing with that little nubbin = 🤤😏😉
I love how people are coming up further ideas for the bowl, I hope Nick will do something further with it. It's just so unusual 😊
Adult content only: Party starts with - "Well here is the bowel to throw your keys into and grab some protection...or not...um..."
Seems like most comments are suggesting adding resin to the bowl until it is solid and workable. I would LOVE to see how you salvage this piece. ❤️
It's 3:40 am here, what a great way to wake up! Happy belated birthday! Here's to trying!
you can after you sand it , use a cup of mixed resin and paint over it all with it it leaves a great finish all over it ... I do it all the time especially when I make box puzzle pieces I use extra resin to glue them all together . i'm telling ya it works great
It's beautiful. It looks like end of day glass.
Who else was expecting him to fill them with water before casting in resin?
Just me? Ok…
Edit: Happy Belated Birthday Nick!!!
A thing doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful & useful. Resin & balloons look lovely. You should be proud that you got it finished. Night night. Please do a pot noodle pot/ bowl out of pot noodles…now THAT would be cool!
I don't know how many people appreciate the money Nick is saving a LOT of us by doing the experiments some of us just can't afford to do.. lol.
I would still like Nick to try turning a resin project that was jammed up with old resin shavings. A lamp, perhaps. Something that might make the shavings show up in the light.. Experiment time!
I think it came out great. There were a few options you could have done to fix it. One, glue a block with epoxy to the base to be able to mount it on the lathe or if you wanted to finish it by hand, you could get your mold you originally had it in, and put it back in, with a slight gap between it and the walls. This would allow you to encase the outside in resin that would allow you to give it a good finish. Same can be done on the inside as well with a smaller bowl for the mold.
I think it came out kind of fun! Nice job.
Happy belated birthday! Cool fact, one of my daughters was born on Mother's Day! She has two adorable kids, so every now & then she gets to celebrate both holidays at the same time!
Thanks Nick man! I'm in ICU right now...... recovering from congestive heart failure bolt out of the blue! So keep up the good work......it is helping
It would have been a nice balloon pot if the resin and balloons could work together. It is still beautiful. Thanks Nick it is a big plus just to see and hear your good humor
I think its awesome.
I reckon if you painted a few layers of resin over a few days and then sanded, it would fill the holes and stop the balloons.
My first Grandson was born last Sunday, Glad you enjoyed your stay in my home city 👍 Neon balloon bowl will be great for the kids popcorn.
Definitely poppin Nick! Great to see you! 👋🤗
Up Up & away. Love the bright colour scheme Nick. There’s not much you won’t have a go at which is what makes your channel so interesting. Would make a great jellybean bowl.
This turned out really cool. I loved the little balloons poking out. I thought they were rather cute.
Haha, when you said "water balloons" I thought they were going to be filled with water! HA! I was wondering about the finishing of it; would it be possible to coat the outside with a UV resin and hit it with a UV light? I don't know, just wondering. I thinks it's really cool anyway!!
My birthday was on fathers day! I turned 21! Then lost my ID a week later 😅 haha First finding out my best friend was the same birthday as me, my favorite Creator on UA-cam had the same birthday as mine! You inspired me to do creative things again after 5 years of depression! This makes this year a 1000 times better! 😁 Thank you!
You could pour a thin layer of resin on the top of this bowl and you would have a really good quality finish. Try to resand it and put this additional layer of resin.
Friday morning coffee with Nick... a great way to start the day. Oh and I would use that balloon bowl as a receptacle for the kids to toss the used water balloons in at the end of the day.
My Dad always said to us think of how much you need in any project then double it at least lol. I think you should always double the amount you need to allow for floating to the bottom. I love you videos & love watching them last thing at night cos they set me up for a good happy sleep !
I think I have an idea that might save the balloon bowl. Keep in mind that I don't do this stuff, so I have no idea if this would work.
Get a bigger mould bowl--like 1 or 2 cm larger in radius. Put about a cm of resin in the bottom and let it harden. Put the balloon bowl in the mould bowl then fill the space between with resin and let it harden. De-mould the now extended balloon bowl, put about a cm of resin in the bottom of it and let it harden. Then find an inner mould bowl and put that inside the extended balloon bowl. Pour resin in between the extended balloon bowl and the inner mould bowl, let it harden and de-mould. Now you've got a balloon bowl with an outer shell you can put a great finish on.
It's so bright and colorful! I'm sure it could serve a purpose somehow 🎉
It looks really amazing, Nick. Bummer you couldn't turn it. Have you considered mixing the balloons in resin first, then pouring them into the mold? You might have to use a vacuum chamber to pull out some of the air, though.
Awesome! What if you layered or balled together loads of them and then resin it?
I think you should make moulds and re pour resin into it and outside of it. It would be two more steps and more sanding but I think you can make this work.
Nifty experiment!
I'm wondering if you couldn't do a flood coat with resin in order to even up the outsides? That might give you a little leeway with the balloons and keep them from reaching the surface. Not sure what you'd do with the inside though.
I love how you even use scraps to create something so interesting.
Just a thought. Mix several colors of resin, fill each balloon with a different color. Only fill them to the point they become round, but not expanded (till they are about the size of a ping pong, or golf ball) and don't need to be tied. An egg carton would probably work to hold them upright. Maybe.
I think this would have worked if you had made a clear coat first, then added the balloons. In fact, it was you that taught me that, lol. I love the way you experiment, we never know how it will turn out. So fun.
Looks cool ... good start .... try this tho if you do it again... first cast the bowl shape of just clear epoxy .. make it thick-ish so that the balloons don't pop out again... do the same with the pressure pot.. then cast the balloons in the clear epoxy bowl ... I would leave some bubbles in the cast with the balloons.. I think it might look cool ... then when you sand it none of the balloons will pop through .... hope this helps ... it did when I did it ...
The bright colors are so awesome...
Definitely your quickest vid.
You could always paint coat it in more resin to finish?
Or set that bowl into a slightly larger bowl, and cast clear around it, and then finish that one as you normally would?
Not that a larger bowl would fit in your pressure pot mind...
Sweet video. I wonder if you could do it in a couple different stages, like pour some resin in the botton of the bowl and let it dry, then put a smaller dia bowl in and fill it up with more resin and let it dry and then go the next size smaller bowl and then add the ballons
From the title, I thought you were going to fill the balloons and then cast them in resin! Maybe you should!
It’s still a colorful snd striking piece. Thanks for testing this out 👍
If you did an outer( and inner I guess since it's a bowl ) resin shell around that bowl it will resolve your issue and it would actually giver it a deeper appearing finish .
14:08 Yes you can get a Great Finish on the bowl...
Coat the surfaces with a fresh layer of Resin and then polish that...
That way, you know you don't have to worry about hitting the Latex Rubber...
It will also fill in any holes or pits on the surface as well...
It actually looked pretty good right out of the pressure pot. Just needed the rim smoothed out. But what a cereal bowl. That'll wake you up in the morning.
What about putting various colored resin in several of the balloons (enough to expand them, but not so much that you have to seal the top to keep the resin in. Maybe use a push-pin in a piece of styrofoam to hold them upright so they can cure). Then epoxy the cured balloons (or even just the resin in the balloons) into a bowl or platter. If you use the whole balloon, you can maybe attach string to make them look like they are floating.
Very pretty! I've read several comments regarding salvaging this project... YES PLEASE!!! 🐶 I just think it's so pretty and colorful, and it would be a shame to let it go to waste. Yes, a little 'bowl-ception' (a bowl within a bowl 🙃) would be truly "funkadelic"! Also, HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY! 🎂 🎉 🥳
Cant you apply more resin outside & inside then do it.. That should give you a surface you can sand & buff... Just a thought... Loved it..
Would you be able to get a better finish on it if you places it back in the bowl with a thin riser in the bottom and fill in the gap with fresh resin?
oooh when I first read the title I thought you were going to do filled waterballoons, like your orbeez project.
I would love to see what happens if you fill some water balloons with water and then cast them. The heat would break the balloons and the water would make awesome bubbling cracking effects.
First time watcher - make an LED night light out of it. The slightly less-than-perfect finish won't matter - you'll be enjoying all the color!
Try putting a quart/liter of resin in the mold bowl and push the resin bowl in to make a resin layer on the outside about 6mm thick.
It still looks cool! They might work good for one of your guitars, because you could put a layer of resin on the bottom and top so they don't peek through. I love all the colors, though!
11:51 it looks cool 😀
You could brush on a thin coat of UV resin and hit it with a UV light. That could give it a stable surface and encapsulate any loose balloon material on the surface.
What about filling the water balloons with resin then set them in a bowl with resin around that then attach to a lathe and carve it out? A lot of work but might have a better result with the look of inflated balloons.
I think if you put another layer of resin on it you could get a good finish on it and it would look really cool.
That would look great as a lampshade! Very colourful!
I hope that you had a wonderful Birthday/Father's Day Nick ♥
Hey Nick.
What if you get a bigger bowel...put a spacer on the bottom.....then get a smaller bowel and mold a thicker apoxy surface to fill in the holes from the balloons and allows more room for shaping?
Super cool tho for sure....God bless
Nick this was a great idea as for the balloons coming through in places could that not be solved by painting on a few layers of epoxy over the whole thing and then you would have an all epoxy surface to get a finish on personally I think it would be worth the extra bit of work as it does look awesome 👍👍👍
After sanding this it looked like one of those old rubber pops u pushed inside out and waited for it to pop and jump in the air!! Lol 😂 brought me back to the good ol days before internet 😀
Happy belated birthday! Thanks for sharing the balloon-resin idea. It’s always good to see you making stuff.
Very nice. This bowl on an all white or black table will be amazing.
That end result still looks awesome. I think it would be a great bowl for a kid's birthday party. ♥
That's pretty creative using water balloons. It was worth a shot.
And gotta say, the best looks great!
Happy belated birthday 'Mr Z' I hope you had a good time in Edinburgh. Hopefully we treated you right!
It was amazing 😻
You are an awesome artist!! Brand new to resin and I love your videos!! And can't give enough kudos on your delivery! Love love love!!
Question: What did you spray your bowls with? Thank you Sir!
Happy belated birthday Nick! I love that you think outside the box!!
