  • When Jim O'Connor's students at St. Francis High School in La Canada, Calif., learned where the Vietnam veteran and math teacher spends his free time outside of the classroom, their respect for him multiplied exponentially. Steve Hartman reports.

    When he's not torturing kids with calculus, he's on a whole other tangent. I see what you did there!

    One of the great things about this is no selfies. Ppl today are quick to show the world their good deeds on social media...instead of just doing it because it's the right thing to do. Bravo

    Of only he would realise that some adults (his students) have missed out on love too, and need some of that good stuff just like those babies. School shouldn't be fun? Might as well bring out the whips again. Learning is only effective when you like what you're doing.

    School can be fun....I was a Poster Child for that way of thinking....and I knew my teachers were NOT going to hold me back....they wanted "this Child from HELL" gone....period. I did learn from them in so many ways too....I do wish O had been a bit less rambunctious too...oh well...live and learn! This is a wonderful story! Cheers All....and I'm STILL having FUN

    I was always pretty good at math. Especially algebra and geometry. Although I sort of got lost in calculus. But, I really believe that math can be a fun course. You just have to teach real world math. Even the ability to build an audio speaker cabinet involves complex math and physics. Also, math courses should teach students how to think. Not how to use calculators.

    "School isn't fun. ." yeah but with our education is mostly consists of nothing useful. Most kids find a wholleelelel lot more interest in things they know they will need to use later in life. 😂

    @ 2:20 Why is that childs ear pierced?

    • @IUsedToBeAPygmy
      @IUsedToBeAPygmy 8 років тому +1

      +nodnod winkwink - that's what we did whenever we found a kid in 'Nam. Took'em, taught'em calculus and pierced their ear. Then we'd set them free so the Viet Cong would know "hey, a kid with a pierced ear doing calculus. The US is here!".
      I guess old habits die hard for Mr. O'Connor.

      +nodnod winkwink They do it @ dr. offices now @ 6 months of age. Some friends of ours had their daughters ears pierced @ the dr., when they went to get their 6 month booster shots. It's better than getting it done in some unsanitary mall I guess? We did not get our daughters ears pierced btw.
