My maths teacher not only told me i was gonna fail, but also that studying further maths would be a pipeline dream for me.... I now have a degree in Physics with Mathematics.
Unbreakable determination
@@inbisibleful It was my physics teacher who believed in me :) I was ready to drop to the lower section because i felt stupid. He insisted i could do it and kept me in the top set... He was right. I owe it all to him.
Damn right!! That's how you do it!! Good going

You are a true inspiration people like you make other people dream and aim high keep it up
'I want him to either become a doctor or a lawyer.' - Every Asian parent
(edit) I think a lot of people in the comments misunderstood me, I directly quoted this from the video, I do understand that engineers are also in the group of professions Asian parents want us to be and I do understand that there are Asian parents who don't mind what their child wants to do. I am just speaking about the majority of Asian parents who do worry and care a lot about their child's profession e.g. my parents and a lot of my friends' parents.
so true lol
well making doctors, lawyers and engineers is good enough
Actually Asians respect teachers, especially professors lol. Teachers have one of the best stable jobs in Asia. His parents probably were proud of him even though they don’t express it

Used to watch KA's videos because my teacher recommended him. Good for getting schoolchildren to study, but I realised in college that it's better to read books. Much more informative, much more engaging, builds character, can learn faster, is more fun (once you get used to it and become quite good at the skill), and trains your brain better.
Barack Obama not too convinced, since I find lecture notes to be much faster for cramming if I actually study consistently, but everyone has their own priorities and study methods, so you do you.

I remembered when I was 10 , I have finally passed my Math test after hours & hours of hard work. I was so happy that I teared. My teacher just shut me up and shame me in-front of my classmates & said , “you merely passed, are you that contented?” It hit me real hard and even thinking of it now... I really wished she didn’t have said that. She has no idea how much she had damaged me in that split seconds.
Feels bad. What's worse is that when they are confronted for what they said they just reply with "well I just wanted you to try harder and push further"

@@soup5284 a lot of teachers.....
Well, hopefully you're able to overcome it. Some teachers are assholes and some aren't, but at the end of the day, it is up to you to let it continue to bother you and hold you back in life. Learn how to build a strong mindset, that way, no matter what people say, it'll have zero impact on you.
hope you have come over it! good thing to be an adult is we can manage our own emotions :)
This is simply heart breaking. Life just kept throwing a curve ball at Eddie at each stage. Hope he is rewarded for his effort, empathy, kindness and character.

He's genuinely passionate about his subject. Something which the vast majority of teachers at my school were not.
The modern education system is designed to break teacher and student. Some teachers push through but most are defeated

For the first time in my life i was able to understand mathermatics, thanks to mr. Woo. And btw, I am 28 now. He is a hero around the world! Greetings from Europe! :)
Bless this gentleman! He’s making a huge difference!
I have triple the respect for this teacher seeing that he has a child with chronic sickness, plus 2 more children to raise who have some of their own - albeit lesser health challenges.
He has had a positive impact on hundreds of thousands of people and he will be be remembered as being a positive impact on humanity.
Good teachers are a gift to humanity.
Math was the first class I started skipping. It made me feel so low about myself because I couldn't understand it. Wished Mr. Woo was my math teacher 😭
Former teacher here . I heard this saying long time ago :”Those who know ,do ... those who don’t know, teach!!! “. Mr Woo , my hat’s off to you . You ARE a true educator. You love the subject and teach your students to love it too .
I wish I had him as my high school math teacher fo sho.
But seriously...I want to know why people disliked this video...
Jessie To it happens sadly. No video is safe from dislikes even the most positive ones.
probs people who really doesnt like math
my math teacher says fo sho....
There will always be horrible people who try to bring down anyone who tries to make the world a better place. But one Mr. Woo is worth a million of those hateful idiots.
Hm I suspect it could be because of his comment about the education system and lack of opportunities in Malaysia. Or maybe because his sister spoke of his Christian faith. Tbh that plug about Christianity irked me but I wasn't about to let that get in the way of acknowledging and celebrating what a humane person he is and the great compassion he extends to other people through teaching creatively and joyfully. Unfortunately, there will always be some people who won't be able to see past these "offences".
I was made fun of and bullied in time to time in high school in the classroom and shocking thing is, in the class teacher’s presence. Now with time away, i see not reprimanding those other students, the class teacher was in a way validating them. She was more concerned spitting nice words. And not made fun of by the same students. Her image as the nice teacher was more important to her. When i hear stories of teachers taking action and trying to hear the vulnerable students’ sides, and videos like these where the teacher makes effort, make me sorta cry. And always fall feeling more disgusted with that class teacher in my high school.
"Even though I could not understand, that was so important to him so I just let it be, let him do what he wants" = great parenting. Loved this story especially because I completely related to it. I hated math throughout my life and always viewed it as a language made up of numbers causing myself even more confusion and frustration. It wasn't until my last math class in college where after 2 failed attempts I had one last chance to pass what would seemingly be the last math class I would ever have to take, where things dramatically changed. On the first day of class I walked in and told the professor how much I had struggled with the subject and how much I hated it. Her response was that things were gonna change and to take that negative mindset out of my head. She was right, throughout the semester she helped me extensively, it was like she was rooting for me and really did care about me not only passing but actually understanding and changing my over decade long hate toward mathematics. I passed with a B+/88% and appreciate my professor more than she knows. That's why I loved this video and realize how rare and special someone like this gentleman can be.☺

His quest for logic rather than memorisation really resonates with me...
I feel like schooling teaches you to memorise and a student, if they want to truly learn, need to do extensive research at home to truly understand a subject
How else were they suppose to cover the topics in the yearly syllabus
Ruban Raj Kumar Ganesan Thisnguy manages to do it while teaching the logic 🤷♀️
@@theallseeingeye9388 I'd think teaching them the logic behind it would make it easier. If you understand _why_ you do something a certain way, you can remember it better and even come up with a solution of your own, in case you don't remember a formula they just told you to memorise.

He reminds me so much of my junior year (11th grade) stats teacher. Not only did my stats teacher teach amazingly, he also focused on each and every student, those in AP Stats and those in the lowest level math classes, with equal attention and care. During my junior year, I was hit hard with mental illness, causing me to miss most of fourth term and unable to get any work done. Once when I was in school after having been out for a while, I remember going up to him to apologize for not having most of my work in. He looked at me with the most genuine face and just said, "I worry about you." I started crying. I'd never met a teacher as devoted to his students as him.

Just by looking at the glitter in the eyes of the children you can understand the impact that Mr. Woo has on the students of maths. He did what many teachers fail to do, that is to kill the fear of learning and embrace and love the subject that they read. My teachers once said, "Love the subject that you read, that is the key to Learning". That is one of the advises I can comfortably share with everyone. And when you see that after trying for long you still cant love the subject, dont force yourself, that is the signal of your brain that the subject is not for you. Move on. Try another subject. You dont have to know everything in this world. We have Googe for that. *DO WHAT YOU LIKE*

A person - Eddie Woo - after my own heart... teaching is a calling, an art, a gift through which the skill of teaching is honed, enhanced and developed... way to go Eddie Woo !!!
Wow I want this teacher here in my town lots of kids can benefit from his teaching.
I was the same person that Eddie was when my family started falling apart. You stand up and hold your loved ones close.
Regarding your youngest son Mr Woo, there may be hope yet. Sometimes children surprise you. My eldest brother was still tiny when he got confirmed in the church at 14; the vicar pulled his tie and said: "Are you ever going to grow?"
Next time he ran into my brother at age 16 my brother was 6'2. Mind you he did sleep for almost an entire year because the growth spurt made him feel exhausted.
Same thing happened to a boy in my class except he grew to 6'8!!!
He was bullied all the time but the bullies suddenly had to look up to him.
As you'll know from being a teacher medical, technological, nutritional knowledge, in fact all knowledge changes all the time so just keep hoping but if he stays small, I'm sure you'll love him regardless. He's a lucky child to have a father like you and the world is lucky to have a teacher like you. Thank you for all you do.
