  • If you love oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lemons, limes and other citrus, growing the trees in pots is super easy! Here I show you how to take the first step once you have purchased your new citrus trees. Up-potting through the life of the tree is necessary to promote good health and sturdy, accessible trees. I'll cover pot selection and soil mixtures, at least the way I do it. I'll show you how easy it is!
    Fruit trees are so gratifying, loads of citrus each winter is a great blessing.

    I recommend cow poop for containerized citrus who has the opportunity to collect them in the cow pasture. Here in Europe it is possible, I don't know how it is in the US
    Dried and left for several months, they are an excellent fertilizer and can be mixed into well-drained soil. It's better than manure because it can burn the plants! it's natural and the citrus has big additions.

      Hey just wanted to give you a heads up. Often times with citrus trees, if they're planted from seed the fruit will taste really bad. They typically are grown from cuttings. So if the fruit tastes bad, just graft a branch from another lemon tree and then you'll have tasty fruits!

    • @klincecum
      @klincecum 2 роки тому

      @@PizzaBoyHero That’s somewhat true, except for the “really” bad thing. While it won’t grow true to type, you may end up with a better tree or a worse tree. You just won’t know until later. It’s not always going to be “really bad” nor even likely.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 роки тому +1

      All the good eating varieties of citrus have lousy and weak roots, are prone to disease or can't thrive well in varied soil and environments. A good root stock, usually C. trifoliata for ost of the stuff we grow, is tough and strong, disease resistant and efficient. They don't bear good fruit if at all, but make an excellent base to graft a clone of a good eating variety. This is why it is almost always a better idea to buy a grafted tree than to plant a seed.

    Just fyi, centering your tree in the pot is very important as your tree grows and fruits. If it is off centered it is much more prone to toppling over and damaging branches and fruit. Pruning should also aim to balance the weight of the tree.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  3 роки тому +2

      Too much soil wicks moisture away from the root zone in a huge pot. The difference between a pot and the actual ground is the ground maintains itself evenly, a pot, no matter how large, is always evaporating and draining moisture and nutrients away from the roots. SMall steps seems to work better and is a standard nursery practice.

    How well do Meyer lemons do in grow bags? I have four plants if differing sizes one of which i transplanted from it’s garden pot into a 10 gallon grow bag. It is doing great so far but it is a young tree about four feet tall. Two of my trees are 20 years old and are pruned into more like bushes They are full of blooms and tiny baby lemons in their 15 gallon resin pots. I don’t know whether to risk transplanting them or not after this present growing season. I am sure they are really root bound and require heavy feeding. My newest one is still in its 3 gallon pot and just budded out in September. Expecting 15-
    -32 degree winter storm this week and have moved them all to the garage where i will also cover them. They are too big to move into my house. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Anything on the bottom will only cause worse drainage. Or at least that is my experience.

    Is that the same mix you've been using for your fig trees? It seems light on compost but I've never grown any kind of perennial in pots. But then I also grow in mostly compost plus some sand cuz they're free. Maybe 1 in 12 pots I make up end not draining well enough but if I can get a root system going then sometimes those pots end up draining fine. And since I'm growing annuals, usually from seed, I'm not out much if I get it wrong. Anyway, glad your trees got some space to spread into

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 роки тому +1

      I could use this mix for figs and probably will, but in the past I've included more potting soil, and usually no vermiculite, just perlite, and occasionally pine fines if I have some. It gets a little compact over a couple of seasons. I'm using this mix for fig up-potting this year, I need to root prune a lot of them and not is the time to do it. With the citrus, I'll be fertilizing more regularly so the nutrients will mostly come from that.

      I never fertilize my in-ground trees, except with the leftovers that I have from my container plants and I toss mulch and compost around the bottom every once in a while. My soil is sitting on a bed of what is largely clay, but it is nutrient dense clay, so trees do pretty well oncee established in the top several inches of topsoil. If you have rich soil, citrus should do fine.

      Sure but it would be rather expensive. I just fill raised beds with a garden mix from a local soil yard and amend it over time with compost. For carrots, just have a consistent texture.

    Do you know if saw dust can be used for mixing with soil. It’s saw dust from the use of a chainsaw so it’s not as fine as saw dust from a circular saw.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 роки тому

      No, it is too much of a nitrogen binder if mixed into the soil. The resources your plants need will be sucked up by bacteria and used to break down the sawdust, making those resources unavailable to the plants. You can compost it first with plenty of greens and nitrogens, and then use it. Even as mulch it tends to be too dense.

      I'd avoid it, or perhaps mix it half and half with something that will retain at least a little moisture.

      Yeah the stress of planting can cause them to drop leaves. They can do a little photosynthesis though the stems, hope that is enough to grow new leaves.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 роки тому

      Meyer Lemons can drop below freezing for a short time. I'm not sure exactly how cold, but its been into the mid twenties here when this lemon tree was only two or three years old. It survived.
