    The water hardness will set it to a specific cup count at which point it will prompt you to either descale or to change the water filter (if you're using one). The harder the setting, the lower the cup count and the more frequent prompts to descale. It doesn't actually sense mineral build-up, however. - Kat

    The superauto model you reference will grind and brew the coffee for you, no work on your part - just the touch of a button. Definitely check out DeLonghi's newer smaller ECAM models for great choices if you want it fully automated. If you want this kind of function that is a traditional coffee extraction with automatic frothing, then this model is a great choice. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions :) - Kat

    This is an interesting model as it has the automatic froth, but if you don't care about that and are looking for one that works well without a grinder, any of them that have pressurized baskets or portafilters will work well for you. One of my favorites is the Breville Infuser. - Kat

    What does it taste like? We just took this from our manual, so if yours says something different, go with that. - Kat

    It's definitely the same diameter as the others but the depth is a little different. We need to get some parts in order to complete the depressurziation on the EC860, but we think it will work without any modification on the other models. Dosage seems like it might max out at the 12-ish grams on their stock baskets. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  11 років тому

    A lot of them are around 51mm, but I would recommend measuring your current tamper and basket; we don't have that model for me to confirm. - Kat

    I haven't used the Dualit so I can't speak to it; the other machines are not designed for commercial, use, though. How busy do you think you'll be re: coffee drinks? The smaller machines just don't have the recovery you'd need if you want to make more than 10 drinks or so in an hour. - Kat

    I have an 820B. I modified the basket by cutting a square window out of the bottom with a hacksaw to depressurise it. The espresso shots are much improved! The basket is only ~52 mm, so I've found it easier to dial in single shots rather than doubles . There is no option to vary the temperature and there is no thermostat light to guide surfing. I'm not convinced that the water is much above 80 'C, so while depressurising the machine helps, it looks like I'll have to upgrade.

    Thanks for the advice, I went with the DeLonghi since we got a good deal on it. I personally don't need the auto-froth but it's nice to have it there if I get lazy. It will be helpful for my mom as she is not too familiar with how it works so hopefully after I program it, she'll just press a button. I bought this along with the Breville Smart Grinder and have yet to set them up. The only thing I would have liked is a metal tamper instead of the plastic one the comes with it.

    If milk based drinks are important to you, I would probably recommend the Breville 840XL. It has a steam arm, so you have more flexibility with your steaming. -Kaylie

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear

    It's more a function of the coffee, not the machine. We happened to use a type of coffee that doesn't have as much natural oil in it, so less crema. - Kat

    By the way, if I remove the sleeve on the steam wand, I can produce much better milk foam too.

    hi great video I have the same here in the UK but I was just wondering when I go to make a coffee with a pod sometimes I get the flashing power light and the water button on the right hand side of that flash any idea on what it is it doesn't make the coffee it's like it's losing pressure thanks

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 років тому

    It's a good choice for someone who wants to do auto-froth, but may not need to be their first machine .... you definitely pay for that functionality and the auto-froth isn't my favorite thing. Pressurized portafilters allow you to use pre-ground coffee or a grinder that isn't rated for espresso and still get a serviceable shot. Non-pressurized requires you to pull shots like a pro -- dial in the grind, tamp, etc. - Kat

    love that you can steam the milk manually except would like more foam....I also read that if you raise the temp to the max that it will affect the amount of foam, do you believe this might be true? mine is never really hot like yours is in the video. thanks so much, I've learned a lot more about our new machine.

    • @ChicagoSince80s
      @ChicagoSince80s 4 роки тому

      Westy J I found a new one at a great price a few months ago, I haven’t had any issues at all, I reprogrammed the temp setting to High/Max, it doesn’t take long for the frothing pitcher to get really hot, I also been taking the outer part/piece of the steam wand and get really good foam

    • @ChicagoSince80s
      @ChicagoSince80s 4 роки тому

      Westy J what I also wanted to ask was..how many grams of beans/coffee ground do you use, I use 12-13grams technically I between 12.9 -13.1 by using that amount the coffee grounds gives me a good pull and the machine doesn’t get all messy(mushy puck sticking to the spout)

    Finally got the Rancilio Silvia today. I have had time to pull 5 shots so far ranging from sour/weak through to bitter/strong and in between. I am utterly stunned that the poorest shots on the Silvia were all much better than the best shots I got out of the EC820B whether pressurised or non-pressurised. I have entered a new and much better world. De Longhi - you've been good to learn the basics on but now it's time to say goodbye...

    is that the same 5 piece delonghi basket as the rest of the line and if so whats the proper dose for the double basket? i find 10-12g of coffee works for my machine (ec-330) i'v also finaly figured out my ghetto unpresurized version (cut the pressure plunger off) and just this morning i pulled the best shot that machine has ever done. i cant wait for the un presurised experimentation.

    Hi, I'm a coffee enthusiast and like drinking it for both the taste and the caffeine. I have never owned an espresso machine only a drip coffee one, but am interested to explore and try my skills at this art. My first question is, is this a good entry model? and can I temporarily use store-bought ground coffee without affecting the taste significantly? I have yet to get me a grinder (looking at the baratza encore). Thanks! :)

    Can I say the machine can be adjusted to deliver different hardness when the water comes out of the coffee crema filter? "In my case I use the water from the water machine that has the filter function, I suppose that would be soft water. If I set the EC860-M in the hardest level, is that mean the water will change to hard as it comes out of the coffee crema filter?" I am making it more confuse. Maybe that function is just to set the reminder to clean the machine when reach hardness level I set.

    I just got the 850, unbelievable deal here now as the machine is being phased out it seems. From what I see it's exactly the same as the 860 but without the cup warmer button and the steam wand is about half the length of the 860's. So far, so good, but I need to change out the basket to make a decent espresso, because this pressurised one is only good for milk drinks IMO. Forgot to add that with the non-pressurised modification, I also tried removing the plastic insert from the portafilter and putting a nut in the central screw hole. This was not a good idea because the spouts are too open and the coffee dribbles everywhere. With the plastic insert, the liquid is directed into tidy streams as one would hope for.

The Breville Infuser is in the same price range, so you might want to take a look at that machine (www.seattlecoffeegear.com/breville-infuser-espresso-machine) :)

    My Delonghi was working well until i decided it needed to be cleaned. I ran 2 consecutives cleaning cycles with vinegar and water (50/50) . Then i tried to make some good coffee but the machine failed. It is still alive , but after 3 second i push the start button and the machine "starts " , then nothing happens (error) with red light blinking . Any clue whats going on here ?

    I'm a noob with coffee. Don't drink it actually. More of a chocolate person. But... I want to buy an espresso setup for a dear friend. Would you recomend this machine for a coffe noob and what is the difference with the pressurized portafilter and then non pressurized?

    We haven't carried them for a few years, so my knowledge is outdated. - Kat

      Hi Iven Liau! Generally the steam wands are not interchangeable and we unfortunately we do not offer the EC850M to test and see if the steam wand is actually interchangeable. - Sarah

    This would be nice if it comes with a non-pressurized basket

    Which do you think is better? Breville Barista 870 or this De Loghni?

      Hello juan esparza, They are both excellent machines! However, some differences to keep in mind when deciding is that the Delonghi EC860 offers automatic and manual milk frothing, while the Breville Barista only offers manual frothing. The Delonghi also comes equipped with a portafilter that can brew ground coffee or e.s.e pods. However, the Breville Barista offers a built in PID that keeps the water temperature at an ideal 200ºF and comes with a more professional tamper. I hope this helps! - Sarah
