Something mentioned on another channel, and something you're doing here, is just talking. We normally don't say anything when playing piano, so trying to sing and play piano is a totally new feeling. Try holding a conversation while playing. Talk to yourself if nobody is around. This makes it a lot easier to mentally separate what your mouth is doing from what your hands are doing. It's great practice for keeping different times because you typically don't sing when you talk, so your talking is done at a much slower pace than playing; the sounds you make when talking don't line up with any of the sounds you are making with your hands.
❤❤❤ Thank you 🙏 ❤❤❤
brilliant lesson. thank you.
Yup, Steve, I'm one of the many that have asked you about THIS topic and I have to say this: As a fan and a student, this video is absolutely superb in that it presents the issue comprehensively and then crafts and presents a SIMPLE solution. Yes, it is a "why didn't I think of this myself" solution but we all need that. And this is one that is mapped out so well in this video that it will be indelibly etched into my brain cells when I now sit back down and work on songs. There's a lot going on with your overall technique (and more to come later this month) but for me, THIS brings it all together. Again, you've cracked the code and I thank you!
Got to crawl before you walk. Strange how all of this works, but it does. Another great video. Thanks Steve.
I've been a Billy and Elton fan since i could remember, so when I first started learning piano, I was also singing, it just always kind of came naturally to me.
Thanks Steve for another great video, you are so easy to listen to, you communicate with your audience in the most pure form a skill not many have.... cheers and take care...
Thanks Steve ,I'm a guitar player, many long years of playin. Have a difficult mountain song and playin and singin is a little complicated. for guitar and voice. It seems like some great tips. Thank you, like eatin a elephant.
Thank you, Steve. Great advice.
Really interesting explanation Steve! Thank you so much!
Great video with very good advice. I used to comp for locals for 17 years. Another piece of good advice is to sing like you not like the artist you like so much. You sing just just fine in your own way
Seems I'm always learning the things I want to learn from you. Thanks
Great
Steve, you play without the lead sheet so, what if you add the music sheet while you sing and play at the same time, what’s the best position for the mic? Thanks
Thanks for the tips Steve. Now for my shameless plug. My brothers and I just made a "Why Me" by Kris Kristofferson video while the 3 of us were in Montauk NY because it was one of my recently departed father's favorite songs. I think my brother Frank kept his piano playing simple? I'd be honored if you had a look. Thanks.
So far this is not an issue with me as i've been playing bass and singing for years. My problem is, i find the mic is in the damn way and i cant see my hands. Another trick (as with bass) is know the lyrics inside out so you dont even have to think about the next line.
I can't sing in the first place...so there's that problem.😅
Thank you , I thought it was just me .
Trust me....it's NEVER "just you".....you're always in very good company with anything you're struggling to master, but there's always a way forward as well. Thanks for watching! :-)
Is there a practice method anyones here knows about that we could do when we’re not in front of a piano?
Like if you practice rubbing your belly while patting your head to get your hands used to doing two different things at the same time.
I'm a teacher - skip the first 3 mins. The secret of teaching is less not more! ;-)
You do your thing, I’ll do mine. Thanks.
Already a sub and I liked the video...I love your approach and your style.I am improving at an incredible rate... THANK YOU!!!.….. PS...Does Shaq know you have one of his wine glasses!!!😂😂
Thanks, and so glad to hear you're making progress! LOL....no, I snuck the glass out of his house after a party one night and I'm just hoping he never notices ;-)
