Thank you, yours was far more realistic than theirs, and I appreciated your drip irrigation and planting demo at the end. I would have liked you showing us how you filled it and what you filled it with. 😉
I had a big year-old pile of biomass that I had intended to shred and turn into compost, but it composted (mostly) by itself. I filled the bottom of the bed with the dry twigs and sticks on the top of the pile, and then shoveled all the decomposed biomass (looks like compost at that point) into the bed. Then topped with about 12 bags of high-quality soil (Malibu Compost). I hope that helps.
Thanks for the great video! You made the whole process look easy and simple. It looks like you have some sort of covering over your plants after you planted them. What covering did you use and why?
That's called floating row cover (summer weight) or garden fabric. We use it for a number of reasons. 1) It keeps Mittens from using the bed as a litter box. 2) It prevents critters (birds, rats, opossums) from coming in to eat the seeds and plants until they are more established. And 3) it prevents cabbage moths from laying their eggs on brassica plants while they are too young to withstand the attack. We keep the fabric on there until the plants are established. The fabric is reusable and lasts for many years.
I've wanted a raised bed like this for a long time, but I don't think I can afford to fill it w/ soil as I don't have near enough compost. 🙃
The company makes some great suggestions for how to fill the bed if you don't have enough soil. Also, I often suggest that folks fill beds half way the first year, then keep adding soil each season until it's full. It breaks up the cost over the year so you don't feel the pinch.

@@Gardenerd That's a really fantastic idea. Mine is 32 inches tall and I still have about 4 inches to go before it's filled all the way. I may just leave it instead of filling it. I also think it might help protect the plants from the wind.
Just do (in this order) Chicken wire 1", cardboard, bad dirt, logs, sticks, green matter, poop, yard dirt and then on the final foot or so (vertical) make a mix of the more expensive (paid for dirt). Just plant shallow crops the first year (no carrots) and in a year or so all of that will break down and turn into premium dirt.
Does the metal leach into the soil?
It's not galvanized, so there is no zinc leaching into the soil. You'll have to ask the company about their coatings. Apparently they are sound and stable.
