My parents use piles of stones to make a garden bed. We can’t afford wood or metals so we dug some stones around our property and found so much bigger stones. That’s the story of our natural garden bed.

They basically ripped of birdie beds from Australia. They are amazing garden beds, I have 2 large ones. Or maybe they are a partner of birdies but the technology is pioneered from birdies.

I use wood that I treat with 3 coats of linseed oil. I will have to replace after a few years. I'm currently on year 3. They are weathered gray but not decaying.

Wood is the worst material for a raised bed. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
Take it from someone that made a 9' ft. wide × 27 ft. long × 24.5 in. tall raised bed in the backyard of a Baltimore City rowhouse. All dimensions are inside dimensions so that I could plan out for an exact amount of square footage. I was using Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening book as the model for planting.
The bed was constructed from 2"×6" & 2"×10" pressure treated Southern yellow pine purchased from big box home improvement stores. The sides of the bed consisted of 3 tiers. A center tier of 2"×6" boards, and bottom/top tiers of 2"×10" boards. 9.5" (10") + 9.5" (10") = 19" + 5.5" (6") = 24.5".
I used 2.5" long, galvanized steel lag bolts & HD galvanized steel washers to bolt this bed together. All holes were pilot drilled to prevent splitting.
It was incredibly well constructed. Every 4 ft. across the short side of the huge bed were internal braces/dividers consisting of a 2"×6" board. I did this to combat the weight of the soil from bowing the long sides of the bed.
In effect, what I created was 7 separate beds with inside dimensions measuring 9 long × 4ft. wide × 24.5 inches tall. To create a sturdy walkway, I placed three rows of 2"×4" pressure treated boards down the center of the long side of the bed. I used galvanized steel deck screws to attach the 2×4's to the end boards, as well as the cross braces. This walkway, although narrow, allowed me to step up on top of the bed to weed & harvest plants that could not be reached from the long sides of the bed.
What I effectively ended up with was fourteen 4 ft. × 4 ft. Square Foot Gardening beds, with each bed sharing the entirety of the 9 ft. × 27 ft. bed for root growth.
As well as I made those beds, and they were very time consuming to build, as well as expensive to fill; the supposedly 15-20 year lifespan of the premium pressure treated wood was a total lie.
There was marked deterioration that started taking place in about 5-6 years. In less than a decade, there were spots on individual boards where a 10 year old boy could take a flat-bladed screwdriver, and thrust it completely through the 1.5 inch thickness of the board. In just 12 years every board could be broken into pieces either with one's hands, or by snapping the boards in half over a curb with a thrust from one's leg.
Bad, bad, bad investment of time & money. The healthiest, & most cost effective raised bed will be one built from stone. Everthing that leaches out of stone will be completely organic, and soil biota will use those minerals as part of their life processes. Unfortunately, the 2 drawbacks to stone are the weight, and the cost. Stone will be extremely expensive if purchasing cut stone, and field stone will be nearly as expensive when the labor to dig it up, tranport it to the raised bed's site, washing it clean, and fitting it together into a dry stone wall is factored into the equation.
Concrete building blocks, AKA cinder blocks, are probably the next best choice. They too will be expensive to build with, especially as they really require being mortared together to prevent them from shifting, large gaps opening up between the blocks, and soil leaking out of the bed.
Both stone & cinder block absolutely REQUIRE a proper bed foundation that is level, properly tapped down, has the proper bedding material under the block/stone. Without a proper foundation, a stone/block wall will not be stable in the long run. Well built, a stone/block raised bed should last for generations.
The next best choice, as I see it, would be either a Vigo, or a Birdies alusteel raised bed.

These sounds like outstanding metal garden bed walls, and I'm sure they're just what many people are looking for. But I wonder what other options are out there. Ceramics come to mind: clay, bricks, etc. They'd last indefinitely with no fear of contamination of any kind. A pile of tiles is also inexpensive.
Stones are another option. Some gardens even have appropriate stones just laying about nearby. They can be simply stacked into a low wall, or bound with mortar for easier construction with less upkeep.
There are many long-lasting natural and/or non-reactive materials that would be suitable for this purpose. But that's the fun of gardening: you pick what you want to plant, you're in control of your garden! And I won't argue with these Vego metal beds, they are a pretty and practical off-the-shelf solution. I enjoyed this review and especially how it addressed short-term and long-term safety concerns. Thank you.

Getting ready to put together four of the Vego beds today. Replacing my old wooden raised beds. I want to transfer my soil to the new bed as well. But will likely come up a little short on material. My plan is to use wood chip as the soil base over cardboard weed barrier on the bottom. Then compost and soil mix over the wood chips.

I love that Vego is so versatile with design. I also love that they have the ability to add the framework for the different covers. I think the durability is identical. (a wash) After that the difference with Birdies VS Vego is one is Australian made and the other is Chinese made. I'm leaning towards Vego based on the versatility of the designs and the biggest is the framework to be able to do the covers easily. Oh, and the ones on wheels! I'm getting tired of lugging my Lemon tree around by hand. lol We will see what the longevity is of Vego. I know Birdies still looks great after 13 years they still look new with very little issues except on the inside.

    Beautiful transformation. Keep it up.
As I am a keen gardener grow my own vegetables. I love flower garden too. We moved in to new house 10 months ago. It is in a new development and a brand new house. The garden was a nice green blank canvas. I brought around 250 plants from my previous place. I couldn’t do much in the garden last year and have been waiting for the spring. Weather is getting better in the UK now.
So, starting planning to design the flower garden and the vegetable garden. I am very excited.
I have been using 1m x 1m plastic raised for last few years. They are very sturdy and very good quality products. But the height is only 25cm. I cannot add the height.
I was thinking to use Railway sleepers to make the raised beds. While I was researching about the different types of garden raised beds I found these products using by the gardeners in USA and Australia. Then started searching in the UK and found out the 6 in 1 modular types. They are smaller but liked them very much. Only 40 cm height. Ordered 2 from Amazon and received them couple of days ago. I ordered another 4 this morning. They are mist mint colours.
After watching your transformation of your garden channel and others channels on UA-cam is giving me confidence to buy more. Thank you very much for the video.

The fact that the link in the description isn't an affiliate link is a really strong source of confidence for me. I can't think of any problem with the beds. I did wonder if the metal posts might be pulled through the soil and chip the paint. I look forward to seeing how they live with the occasional bump and scratch over the next few years.

Great video. Came back to say we bought 5 Vego beds after seeing this video last year. We had issues with wooden beds too. Love the quality of these beds but customer Service was not existent when we couldnt get the last bed from our order or a refund. We wound up purchasing 5 additional beds from Birdies beds/epic gardening (amazing customer service). Anyway, our garden has flourished in these beds. Everything grows amazing in our hot desert sun. Oh and we finally got our last bed from Vego when we contacted our credit card company to do a chargeback. It could have been an isolated incident. I just ordered 2 of their coversystems today and lights which Epic Garden doesnt sell so hopefully they come quickly and no issues.

This has been available in Australia for many years, maybe as many as 50yrs. There's nothing new about this. Aussies have been putting this on our rooves for 40-50yrs at least. We build sheds and water tanks out of it or whole houses these days. I bought my first garden bed in early 2000s and I am still using it. It has been unbolted and rebuilt so many times as I have moved from property to property and still going strong. Even the plastic tubing around the top has held up well.
Of course, there are several imitators but that's the same with every good product. You can either buy a cheap one or spend the money and buy a good one.

Isn't it too expensive? I'd rather plant directly in the soil.

not all gardens are naturally full of soil. My yard had no soil when we moved it. No, it wasnt concrete, it was just rocky

@@roohihabibullah7261 I agree, but maybe it is cheaper remove some rocks and add soil than buy expensive metal beds for the plants.

You really can't beat TOTE gardening. My tote gardening is flourishing and ground garden lagging behind. Ground garden was planted first. I harvested from my Tote garden long before the ground. On the ground you have no control where water and nutrients go. In Totes, it's total control. Make Compost Tea and get faster harvest! Plus moles, bugs pests. I use TULLE FABRIC to protect certain plants. Full control!!!!
