Phenomenal episode. Spent 13 years in the military. Was chipping away at the vague beginnings of an "Operator" career, but honestly glad never went that way. Too damn soulless.

Yup. Did my time on tanks and was glad I didn't make any moves in that direction. You gotta really enjoy the killing to not completely go nuts with that kind of career.

I could understand some kid from a poor family enlisting and doing a few years for college/insurance but you saw what the job was and resigned multiple times, I highly doubt you got out in time whatsoever.

This is the good shit. Top quality quarantine relief. Operators as like Rome's Germanic mercenaries? I suppose the closer analogy would be Roman legionary veterans coming home with grudges because of being stiffed on their retirement land they were promised, and sometimes carving out a piece for themselves by evicting a county of already enserfed peons who now had to pay taxes having been made citizens for that purpose, but who couldn't afford it and were restive anyway, and were an only partly Romanized mixture of Gauls and German immigrants. The army was the one institution in the late empire which was still getting paid, and had the privilege of getting access to some decent arms and armour, guaranteed by mandatory delivery quotas at fixed prices from nascent guilds of craftmen in specific cities and provinces who were no longer allowed to change profession from their fathers' craft. The German mercenaries were also getting stiffed, but they could be given land on retirement, more or less, and settled in the borderlands to marry local girls and provide sons who could follow their fathers into the army, but now as part of the low morale, low pay Limes garrison levies. They only started to rebel when both the pay and effective provincial control broke down in the context of incessant civil wars and economic collapse resulting from runaway rentierism in the Imperial core, with the wealthy fleeing the cities to escape taxation and setting up feudal demesnes on their villas with craftsmen imported from the cities to work onsite for food, and peasants forced to convert their tax liabilities into food deliveries to the landlord, and the imperial tax base therefore collapsing outside of the ongoing money economy in the border provinces where there were still some people with coins to spend, because the troops were spending their pay there. America's still a way off currency and tax base collapse. The operators' economic interest is in maintaining the military industrial complex, or ensuring they get kept onsalary in the event of an audit and downsizing of the military. How they'll break politically I can't guess, but they may become available as mercenaries as and when the rentiers begin establishing their own armed security forces. Some of that is already the case obviously, with Blackwater et al. Jesse Ventura was an operator and he's turned out to be a good guy, and the poverty draft grunts can break anti-system. Too many contingent variables.

Actually the whole argument of the low cost goods is incredibly inhumane when you turn off your capitalist brain. Like wait, so are HUMAN BEINGS in third world countries worth less to you? Like regardless of whether we can solve poverty in the first world (which we can through wealth expropriation from the rich), its inhumane to say that we SHOULD exploit so that some other people get cheap shit.
And the excuse of economic benefit to the third world is also just false. If thats so, how come most of those countries are stagnating WHILE their "good" colonisers are constantly growing? Funnily enough, all the countries the World Bank brags about (that they are growing economically at a high rate) are colonised by China or Europe predominantly, most of the mostly American puppet states usually completely stagnate.

I disagree why do we have to respect people who are knowingly joining to kill and occupy other countries that haven’t done anything militarily to the USA, BTW they certainly don’t respect the US citizen

    •  4 роки тому +4

I wanted to find a way to disagree with this but i legit can't. Like any argument that pops to mind boils down to the good cop argument, which we know is false, there are no good cops.
So yeah. True. You shouldn't respect someone who is in the army, as they are willingly and consciously doing imperialism. Like yeah you can plead that they are misguided but you can't claim that they are ignorant about it.

The operators are tools. They're pawns or, at best, knights. The Wise Men were wonks, pitchmen, project managers, producers, 'creatives'. They were 'Mad Men'. The operators are peons with antisocial personality disorder. They're cops with trillions of dollars of toys.

    • @Kid_Ikaris

Yeah, at this point we have too many operators to indulge the fantasy that all of them are both brilliant tacticians and perfect athletic specimens. I've met people like that though, but it seems few and far between.

Professional economists who at this point still optimize for cheap import shrimp(-like goods) clearly suffer from a pretty crippling form of OCD...
