Totally loved the grey pixie cut as she has the perfect shaped face to have one, it highlights her great cheekbones. It was so flattering and more youthful than the long hair but please NO to going blonde. She has worked hard to transition to grey and as you said yourself, it would be a lot of maintenance to keep it looking good
I totally hear ya! I knew the blonde would be some maintenance, you’re definitely not wrong there. I just wanted to show it to ya anyway because I thought it would be fun to see!!
Yes, I got off the “hair style” treadmill years ago. Travel to other countries opened my eyes. Get a good cut and know how to braid, do simple updos & use hair accessories. I don’t even have a blow dryer.
The short “curveball” may be one of my favorites that you have ever suggested! It makes her look youthful and edgy. I hope she goes for it and sends follow up pictures.

I was interested in this video because I also wanted to be able to tie my hair back when gardening and painting. I had started to notice that the hair elastics were causing my hair to break even when the package claimed otherwise. So, I decided on a shorter bob with a bit of layering at the bottom.. The new shorter cut is more flattering - adding volume where I want it - no more pyramid head) and eliminating the need for tying my hair back. The added bonus is that it’s so easy. Thanks
Love the first curveball - gray with lowlights. It gives her whole appearance a youthful, spunky lift. Her original gray is a beautiful color, so forget blonde, just add lowlights.
I agree that the gray definitely is more than enough to really have some fun! I do like the blonde, but I fully understand where you’re coming from! I appreciate the feedback.
She has a great profile and the short style shows this well, revealing beautiful cheekbones and jawline, and even bringing out her eyes. With the bob, I wonder if a little updo (beyond a simple ponytail) would do something similar as the pixie cut. Gray and blond both look great on her. Each the suggestion progressively brought out her natural beauty.
I love the pixie AND the blond with low-lights on her! I fully grew out my silver hair, but once I did, I absolutely had NO regrets returning to brunette. The silver was pretty and easy, but I felt so old looking in the mirror.
Same here. Silver was fine when I was in my 40s, because my face was so young looking. But in the 70’s? It is very aging and usually boring to see a bunch of Q-tips.
The short hair cut is so flattering on Judy’s face shape! Love the low lights as well. I have both low and highlights with my gray because I don’t have enough gray hair (yet) to be highlights on its own. I avoided layers for some time and had a blunt bob sans bangs for years as I have fine hair although medium/high density. The nape is less thick and very wavy. The wrong layers make my hair seem weak or (see through). So the weight of the higher density hair was needed for a strong base line. But, the longer it grew, the more flat it was. Last Saturday I got a new cut, took it about an inch up from my shoulders and added layers! Long slices throughout, lighter layers on the back with face framing, kind of shattered curtain bangs. It is easy to style, achieves a carefree messy vibe and love it so much, I am going to take another inch shorter so I have a more piecey bob just below the chin at my next appt. Maybe even some more whispy bangs. Judy, go for layers and low lights at a minimum! But that short style will look amazing! Change is fun!
Yes! Bevel and a bit of layering to the back and face framing layers to blend in her bangs really help bring an overall youthfulness to her lovely bone structure. But, the two wild cards are really cute on her. Thanks for all of your ideas!
I really liked how you mentioned the neck line and how it affects pulling the hair up. That was very interesting to hear bc I have a low neckline. This helped me understand better how it’s not just the length but also the neckline that can affect pulling it up.
Same! My hair is fine and thin, and had to be fairly long to be able to get it into a ponytail - so I got an undercut at the back, basically “cheating” my natural hair line. It means my ponytail is wimpy, but it was worth it. Longer just doesn’t work with my hair. The undercut was very cooling and I only wear it pulled back for sports and yard work, so don’t care if it doesn’t look awesome on those occasions.
I would have liked to see another option- one where some layering was done near the crown to add volume and movement up top and possibly some mid layers as well, and yet keeping it long enough to pull back if needed. Thinking long shag type.
Layers are the only way to go. You can simply do so much with them. I say no to extreme short because I am a pony tail lady that sometimes chooses snoozes over having a gorgeous hair day. You rock dude! ❤
I think so many woman resist cutting their hair short because it can feel like you’ve given in to “old age hair”. It’s what our mothers and grandmothers did when they reached a certain age so the association with short hair and our granny’s is pretty powerful. I think that our generation ages more slowly than the previous generations. We are looking more youthful longer and although we are aging, our attitudes towards aging is significantly different. We are much more powerful and secure in our looks and we know our lives are still significant and not over just because our appearance has mellowed with time. Adding a bold color whether it be in grey, red, light blonde, or beautiful brown is something that woman of our generation can easily rock. Show off your wisdom and have a bit of attitude. Go short and bold. It’s not your grandma’s pixie or crop.
I think it depends on how fast your hair grows. Also my neighbor has shorter hair and is always wondering why her sister and I have to color our hair so frequently. IMO It's because the longer the hair the more it gets "weighed down" at the roots and consequently the more the "natural" color of your hair is visible (ie: mature ish grey). I think sometimes we stick with long hair not realizing that IMO it drags the face downward.
Everyone is different. Older ladies with their long hair pulled back just look so elegant and sophisticated to me. I love my long hair and hope I never have to cut it.
I agree with this so much! There is definitely this stigma. Also, as a very very light skinned female, I see so many older light skinned women and men starting to look "the same". I joke that we all start to look like George Washington eventually.( I know that's rude-sorry) but that's what I am starting to see staring back at me in the mirror. If I were to boldly cut my hair short, I don't know what I'd have to differentiate anymore. It is difficult trying to keep up. My hair is turning a beautiful white, like Judy's, but I am way too nervous to take such a plunge.
I loved the short with the low lights on her. The added detention really sets off the look. To my surprise it made her look more youthful. No need to keep it in a ponytail that way.
First may I say I’m not Dennis, but his wife Luann. That being said I’m 70 yrs old & have long hair that I’ve grown out from a pixie. I look good in a pixie but decided to have long hair again. The problem is I’ve reached my goal but have no style to flatter my face. I do wish I had you as my stylist, I can tell you listen & have great ideas. Anyone who goes to you is fortunate indeed. My natural gray has come in beautifully with what looks like highlights, and I get many compliments on my natural color but I’d like to have my hair styled to flatter my overall look.
I love the slight long bangs at the sides, but not the short pixie look. Love the blonde color. It really makes her skin tone look rich, not pale. You are so talented with your hair trends/knowledge.
I thought her longer hair in back had a powerful flow; I liked the side filled in longer bangs. If she didn't hate the bother of the blond, I liked that. By the way, I let my hair grow during the pandemic, and I love the buns and french twists I have. I love my gray-silver hair. We're all different.
I am 72 and have very long hair. I love it! I had the short hair, pixie, undercut etc. What a pain to maintain and expensive. You can do lots of things with long hair to flatter your face. Take care everyone and enjoy the 🌼 spring.
He does not suggest everyone go short because of age. He has videos on that as well. As a 56 year old with white long hair I don't see that need to cut it and he doesnt either. This video is specific to the person and their personal concerns. Sounds like you don't have that so thats great and that also means its not about yours or your needs. He even shows people how to cut your own if you want to cut cost and ease your process of care. Sounds like you haven't watch much of his videos. This isn't for you it is for many who like to see options.
I like the lowlights. Not the short. Layering it, shorter in the back, and teaching her to use the easy peezy Velcro roller, poof takes years off your looks. If it looks stiff after your set, just pick out the edge, dampen the roots and hit with a small round brush and a dryer. If still looks bad, blow with the round brush back, like Farrah Fawcett, just a little bit. Short hair is aging. I worked on photo shoots for 30 years. Don’t let people cut off your hair.
I love the short grey pixie on her. The blond is fun, too. Also, simply adding some layers and kicking up the back was lovely, as she has a beautiful graceful neck.
The short “curveball” is my fav! In fact I took a screen shot of it to take to my next hair appointment. 😊 My face shape is similar to this pretty lady’s and I wear eye glasses, too. I so appreciate your videos, they are very informative and helpful. May I say that I love that you film out of doors? The bird song is so nice to hear and the scenery is a delight to see.
This looks fabulous.I love the short blond .But the gray with low lights looks great to.What a beautiful difference .On her this is fabulous and makes her look 10 years younger. Wow !!!!!
Love the short layered cut, gray with low lights. If she went that way, pulling her hair into a ponytail may become a non-issue. I think I will talk to my stylist about low lights for my gray. Thanks Justin!
You’re spot on! If you talk to your stylist, make sure they’ve done it before. If not, tell them you want less lowlights the first time and you want them very thin/fine, not at all chunky. You can add lowlights to grey but you can’t take them out. A little goes a long way. They’re awesome though!!
The whole look made such a difference. The blond color that you chose , made her complection look much softer and smoother, at least on my screen, and that, in turn, made her appear younger. Great job!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I think she looks fantastic either way, but the differences in the curveball definitely accentuate her natural beauty! Thanks for checking out the video!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for educating viewers on the difference between the 'size or texture' of the individual pieces of hair (fine/coarse/etc.) versus the 'quantity' of hairs on the head (thin/thick)
I love the shorter, beveled length. Such a difference. But really, really loved the shorter pixie cut! I can't believe how Judy appeared more youthful and filled in. Judy, aren't you amazed??
Thank you for your insight and honesty, Justin! That is so me.. every time I go to a stylist, I say I want this this and this but I don't want to put in the work to achieve the look! NO ONE has ever said to me what you just did! Very eye opening!
Just like last week, I love the pixie cut! I understand her wanting the longer hair for more ease of maintenance and less washing. I’m a every 3 to 4 day washer myself. Butif the short cut works with her hair texture to make it almost a wash and wear style it might be something she likes. I know for myself, the hardest thing for me is to make second and third day hair look good without having to spend a lot of time on it. As a professional, maybe you have some tips for her to quickly style her bed head without having to wash it? Oh, and I love her gray! The lowlights look fantastic too.
I’m 62, went full on lightest natural blonde hair color and love it! It takes 10 years off (I think and am told). I use a box color to touch up the roots every 6 weeks and 40 minutes later, voila!
If I were Judy, I don’t think I would want my hair that short. I like the first three changes, and I do like the blonde added. Those 4 things make Judy look much younger and really complement her face. I love it when you can make smaller changes and make such a difference!
Hi Justin, That was fun! Thank you so much for the opportunity to get your your feedback and the curveballs. I liked all of your feedback although I doubt I will ever go blond. Since I submitted the photos, around a year ago, I have made some changes. I have started getting some layers and my bangs are longer on the sides. I have a hair appointment tomorrow. After watching this, my plan is now to keep getting more and shorter layers and getting the back more beveled. Maybe by the summer I’ll have a pixie cut. 😁I do like the way it looks. A while back, I asked for some highlights, but they were not nearly as dark as shown so there wasn’t much contrast which looks like the key. Also have different glasses which are thin wire rims with black and a bit of purple. Thanks again and for the feedback from everyone.
Oh Judy!!! I, for one would love to see a pic after your appointment tomorrow!!! best wishes!! I felt like you were telling my story!!! My face is shaped like yours, I wear glasses, and I have fine, thinning hair, pure white. i want something different. :) I love the grey pixie on your photo!!
You would beautiful with any style, but like everyone else, I'd love to see what you've done. You obviously have great flair and are confident enough to try different things. Can I have some of that? 😁 I haven't changed my hair much in the past few decades (very long, not pretty, brownish grey, yuck.) Folks like you help me imagine going back to a salon again. I haven't been since a few years before the pandemic. Judy AND Justin: thanks for the window with a view to something else!
She should definitely do the first cut you showed. It will be gorgeous and she can still have her hair pulled back. Pieces falling out from the ponytail would look great, but she said she has varying amounts of wave and she flat irons it. I think she's concerned she'll have just a few wonky pieces that will emphasize this even more, and she will be miserable. Therefore, style number One for the win.
Short grey all the way!! (Justin, that rhymes!). The look is fabulous on Judy. I know it's tough to bid adieu to long hair, esp when it's very pretty as Judy's is but I always think of your advice to us over the years about the beauty that comes from confidence and to me, that short look on Judy's pretty face screams confidence! Go for it, Judy!!! You've got the best of the best talent advising you.
My favorite style and color is the short blond but I understand why she might not want to do that. I personally think it's worth washing every couple of days and using a blond colorant.
Justin you make total sense. Another thing that drives me nuts I have known people in the past who have long hair while past their shoulders and they always I do mean always ,for every occasion every day of the week, have it pulled up on top of their head , in a ponytail with no style. I will never understand that. Thank you for these great informative videos.
I loved both your options for her: 1. More of a makeover suiting her lifestyle concerns and conservative. 2. The other suiting her lifestyle concerns too, but a little more daring. What she decides will be based on her personality and comfort level. But both like very nice on her but , I do like the short on her . Of course, it will look slightly different than the photo shop. I would love to learn of what she choose. I'm glad that you pointed out the face shape, so we can learn about that too.
My hair is this length, can wave/curl & grey. Was looking for something new. Love her going short & blonde. I’m going to give this a try myself & blow upside down & try some styling product(s). I also wear glasses. This is a super classy look & who needs a pony tail? Use a headband (thick or thin depending on occasion. HUGE thumbs up for this one Justin. Berner puppy just turned one🎉
Thank you! I can’t wait to hear how it goes for you! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the pup!!! Give it a huge hug and butt scratch for me. (Berner owners know they love a great butt scratch!) :)
I have learned so much from you. I used to think you needed alot of hair products to make your hair looked like I want it. But I like movement with my hair. Just by using your tips on how to use a brush when I blow dry my hair I don't need hair products and I get movement and love my hair now! Thank you so much
The short blond style looks SO great on her!!! But if she doesn't want the upkeep of blonde, (and I don't blame her at all if that's how she feels), then she should try the short gray style, because it's very cute and youthful on her. Thanks for this video, you always do a great job.
Gosh! I LOVE the shorter haircut on Judy! Wow, she looks fabulous! She could always wear a headband to keep her hair off her face while exercising or gardening. I do prefer her gray with lowlights. So elegant!
I have a similar style to her current one with some added layering, nothing crazy. My shortest layer falls at my jawline, keeping the shoulder length. I’m able to pull it into a ponytail, even with the layers. I don’t know how this would work with her fine hair but thought it was worth mentioning as an option. ❤ Thanks for always sharing your great ideas! I love your videos!
In uk i have similar bob. (As you first styled it). I chose to have mine undercut with a razor to reduce bulk (my hair is fine and thick too. This means I can tie back, have fringe (bangs) and benefit from tying it back and exposing a young look with the cropping underneath. Might have a pattern cut in too!
Hey hey Justin! Love love love the video! Yes I was going to say some more layers when you mentioned but I get her concern! Honestly, I love the curveball with grey natural but shorter hair! I was talking to my friend in India this past weekend and shared 'you' and your channel with her askedbher to check out older videos of how to come up with the face shape amd then decide the hair cut! Much love to you and Dionna from your biggest fan from Charlotte, NC ❤️
Hey! Thank you so much! I always appreciate your support! I’m so glad you like the shorter style, I think it looks fantastic on her. And thank you so much for sharing me with your friend! Hope all is well!
Love the short hair cut , it lifts her check bones, makes her look much younger. I am 70 years old with similar thin hair. I am going to show ths video to my hair dresser so she can advice me if this would work for me. I have just subscribed to your channel after watching this video.
In Judy's original hairstyle/shape, I see chin and jaw. In Justine's first recommendation, I see eyes. Happy, beautiful, feminine, bright eyes. In Justine's second recommendation, I see nose. So I vote for first option. Especially since it could become a step to shorter, funkier cut in future.
@@justinhickox only because I'm always pressed for time. But I'd watch the longer ones as well if that's what your audience desires. Don't forget to include a tidbit about your surroundings... they are refreshing and your trademark.
@@gemabordeaux4729 great point! Trying to find a balance of keeping the videos long enough for the algorithm and short enough to be concise as well as interesting enough for new views as well as veterans has been a process for sure!!! Thanks for your insight!
What if she grew her hair even longer than it is now, but also had all the shaping layers cut into it? Then she could definitely pull it back with no worries, but still have the weight lifted with the layers. Love the lowlights coloring.
Judy is a beautiful woman and each of your recommendations work so well for her. I especially love the blonde pixie, so youthful and fun; but keeping it grey, with or without lowlights, looks fabulous, too.
She’s a beautiful woman!! I love how she looked with the longer of your suggestions. The shorter one is adorable but not sure she would like so much across her face. And the low lights are awesome.
I might be her age and I still have my natural color. I don't seek "youthful" but want my hair to look good. I enjoy your videos as aren't we always searching for the best style? Tk be honest, I think the short cut, in this case, ages her.
I liked her hair before you cut it she has beautiful hair why not sure what all she’s a beautiful woman and why should she cut her hair when it’s so pretty long
I loved the Grey or blond pixie. She looked so much younger and sassy. I think maybe giving up a ponytail, clips, and such is a way to say YES to being a beautiful woman without needing so much hair. You did well on every choice you gave her. Congratulations to you both!
In my humble (and completely unprofessional!) opinion, the shorter hair makes her look younger, and the grey is gorgeous. She could even keep it a little bit longer and still not need a ponytail at all. Lovely.
Love the curveballs! I can’t see styling my hair around exercising at the expense of how my hair looks most of the day and short hair would address looking good all day and not being in the way when exercising.
I changed up the structure of this episode. Did you like it?
I really like it. In the past I might have been a little impatient waiting to see the suggestions.
You did a great job!

I'd like to see you try some long shags, on some of these ladies I think they are pretty.
So
I think the long shag would be better, I like to see longer hair but a shag better
64 and wear my hair long. All my working yrs of having to style it made me love long hair! Bun, braid or pony. I like it and that’s all that matters!

68 yo here, Haven’t cut my hair in 3 years, no dye and and really no longer care who likes it or not. I earned every wrinkle and every gray hair.
High-5! My mom did the same and so do I. It's great to see other long hair fans after 40. 😊
Growibg my hair longer again at 65. I think I look younger . Go figure .
I think it depends on the hair type, thickness and the cut. But ultimately, yes it’s your hair… your choice!

I thought her longer hair in back had a powerful flow; I liked the side filled in longer bangs. If she didn't
hate the bother of the blond, I liked that. By the way, I let my hair grow during the pandemic, and I love
the buns and french twists I have. I love my gray-silver hair. We're all different.
Love the short cut with low lights ! Good job
Loved the short cut & low lights, but not the blond. Your videos are interesting. Thanks!
Thank you.
I love her new hair cut and also the blond hair rather than the grey hair. She looks real stylish .
It depends on the style of the ‘short hair’ and the face shape. There are many, many really youthful shorter hairstyles. Same as with longer hair…
Short hair is aging is a myth!!!!!
Pixie is perfect! Keep the grey! It’s beautiful!!
I love the short grey pixie on her. The blond is fun, too. Also, simply adding some layers and kicking up the back was lovely, as she has a beautiful graceful neck.
I loved the pixie cut in blonde or gray!!! It looked so cute on her and made her look younger!
Wow !!!!!
Explanation was terrific, about wanting something without any work to achieve it! I was a hairdresser many years and experienced the problem often!
Great job!! And that short version looks so FAB!! Eventhough i don't like short hair, it looks amazing on her👍
Wow! The shorter hair took some years away. Even if she decided not to color it updated her look. Good work!
Thank you! I totally agree…the shorter style is so much fun on her!
I liked the grey pixie with low lights the best!
Great job!!
She looks so much better!
Great choice Justin!💯
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I think she looks fantastic either way, but the differences in the curveball definitely accentuate her natural beauty! Thanks for checking out the video!
The pixie in either color looks fabulous on Judy! She has such a nice face shape!
Great job! I love the pixie style on her! Either color works.
Thank you so much! I totally agree, she could definitely go either way with the color for sure.
Love the short style with low lights. Very youthful looking.
Right! Thanks! I totally agree!
LOVE the grey pixie cut!
Love the shorter options, and the blond was fabulous! Great ideas and commentary!
I’m 62, went full on lightest natural blonde hair color and love it! It takes 10 years off (I think and am told). I use a box color to touch up the roots every 6 weeks and 40 minutes later, voila!
Great looks and color choices for her..short hair for the win.
If I were Judy, I don’t think I would want my hair that short. I like the first three changes, and I do like the blonde added. Those 4 things make Judy look much younger and really complement her face. I love it when you can make smaller changes and make such a difference!
Love the short cut on her! It fits her beautifully ❤️. Also love the blond
Thank you, Sharon.. 😁💇🏼♀️
You would beautiful with any style, but like everyone else, I'd love to see what you've done. You obviously have great flair and are confident enough to try different things. Can I have some of that? 😁
I haven't changed my hair much in the past few decades (very long, not pretty, brownish grey, yuck.) Folks like you help me imagine going back to a salon again. I haven't been since a few years before the pandemic. Judy AND Justin: thanks for the window with a view to something else!
I love the short version in her natural silver with lowlights. That is smashing!
Great analysis and instruction, thanks Mr. Hickox!
You’re so welcome! Thanks for hanging out today!
You are the only stylist I have ever felt inclined to trust!!
Justin, I just love your videos! I’m a young 65 and I’ve followed your advice to keep a more youthful hair style.
You are amazing Justin!! She looks younger with the grey pixie!! You nailed it! ❤️
Loved both the short gray and blonde! They really did look more youthful.
I absolutely love that pixie on her! It's so perfect for her. I think the low lights in the gray pixie are stunning on her as well
My favorite style and color is the short blond but I understand why she might not want to do that. I personally think it's worth washing every couple of days and using a blond colorant.
She looks amazing. Awesome job! I like both colors with the shorter length.
Or a bun that really ages them.
@@ktk2094 OUCH even!!!! LOLOLOL
Nice work! The front AFTER photo really did make her look more youthful and prettier.
I LOVE the short gray hairdo. I went from pixie to letting it grow and I'm feeling the pull towards short again
The pixie is so cute and flattering! I also love the color with the depth
LOVE that short cut on her! And the grey tones.
@@justinhickox LOL puppy butt scratch!! my little guy, loved it too, not a Berner tho.
Love this cut. Short & sassy & classy.
You packed a concise video with all the helpful suggestions found in prior ones. Excellent content as always.
Thank you so much! So you liked this format more than the previous ones?
@@justinhickox only because I'm always pressed for time. But I'd watch the longer ones as well if that's what your audience desires. Don't forget to include a tidbit about your surroundings... they are refreshing and your trademark.
@@gemabordeaux4729 great point! Trying to find a balance of keeping the videos long enough for the algorithm and short enough to be concise as well as interesting enough for new views as well as veterans has been a process for sure!!! Thanks for your insight!
Short short short!!! So flattering, much more youthful.
What if she grew her hair even longer than it is now, but also had all the shaping layers cut into it? Then she could definitely pull it back with no worries, but still have the weight lifted with the layers. Love the lowlights coloring.
I like the shorter cut on her. Also the gray. Great video!
I love, love the pixie!
It is so refined and fashionable.
I would love this cut on myself, however my neck is not as nice as hers.
Great video!
Thank you! I agree, it’s a short style that has a lot of youth to it.
The short version is my favorite! I love the suggested color, too.
I might be her age and I still have my natural color. I don't seek "youthful" but want my hair to look good. I enjoy your videos as aren't we always searching for the best style? Tk be honest, I think the short cut, in this case, ages her.
I liked her hair before you cut it she has beautiful hair why not sure what all she’s a beautiful woman and why should she cut her hair when it’s so pretty long
I have to disagree. The short cut, and blonde took 10yrs off. I love it!
Gorgeous face, love the choppy layers & beautiful colour. Great job, this lovely lady looks so much younger & very happy! Enjoy!
Loved the blonde on her bests
The blonde definitely looks fantastic! I appreciate that feedback!
Just love the short look so much more flattering
Like the options for the longer version. Pixie made her look older
Lovely.
Loved the grey more than the blonde. And the short style hair cut was excellent! Just as you said, edgy, modern, and youthful ❤
Love the curveballs! I can’t see styling my hair around exercising at the expense of how my hair looks most of the day and short hair would address looking good all day and not being in the way when exercising.
Absolutely love the short blonde haircut! Looks so much more interesting.
