  • It's a twofer today. We trekked to Napa to sample the all-new 2019 Audi A6 and the 2019 Audi A7.
The luxury C-segment is an interesting space. Shoppers below it are pumped to enter the luxury car market, and those buying above are rewarding themselves for doing well financially. In the C-segment, you find people ...sort of in the middle. This is where the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and the all-new Audi A6 live.
To stand out, Audi needs to update the subtle styling of the A6. The tech inside has come a long way. The engine is more powerful yet delivers slightly better fuel economy. All around, the car is improved. But if it's a bit plain Jane for you, Audi has another midsize trick up its sleeve with the Audi A7.
Both are basically the same car. Each one has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, producing 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Each backs up that engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. And each one packs Audi's latest generation MMI interior tech spread across two (three if you count the gauge cluster) screens.
One stands out and the other blends in... any buyers can choose which one best suits their personality. Either way, Audi has created a strong entry focused on a type of luxury that's not about showing off, but rather it's about making your own life better on a daily basis.

US standards has been such a buzzkill when it comes to regulating the types of lights allowed on cars.

Yep. Very old-school thinking, that's slow to respond to new and better ideas. We got a demonstration of the Matrix LED and Laser lights and it's pretty amazing stuff. Hopefully we can use it soon. The cars are actually fitted with the tech, it just needs a software update to turn it all on.

I think that I will buy A6. A7 is not bad, I think it is a matter of each preference. Anyway Audi has changed. In a good sense.

I don’t even want to know how much it costs to replace one of those headlight units. My wife’s E60 series BMW 545i has Adaptive Xenon headlights and the minimum price I’ve seen for an OEM factory replacement is $1500 each. That’s from someone other than the dealer. Dealer prices are almost $1700 for a new headlight assembly. These Audi headlights have got to be over $2000 each.

You get what you pay for. These are luxury cars for those who can actually afford them!

Harambo that has nothing to do with my comment.

@@harambo9805 But do you really get what you pay for? $4000 on a $60k car to replace a pair of headlights? God forbid you have anything serious go wrong with it. My parents had an A6. I think it was less than 10 years old it required a repair that cost more than the car was worth and they maintained it meticulously. Is that reliable, quality engineering? Supposedly European cars are built to last, but nobody wants them when they get much past warranty. So what is the point? They're basically disposable cars as far as the US market is concerned.

In Germany the A7 front light looks much better , because we haven't this unnecessary reflector.

A lot of cars I can over look it but man those big black (Radar? Camera?) things in the grille are hard to overlook. I wish they could have found a way to make them fit in between the grille slats but instead it breaks it up. Minor gripe but, still. Noticeable.

Audi is really ahead of the other Germans at this point. Everyone else just tries to catch up.

Having worked for Audi and others I would say Audi waits until others with alot of gimmicks or tech. Then once they can make it sell they do it. In 3-5 years from now they will make an Electric A6/7 not 2016 when they should have.

If we disregard quality that you get for $ and $ is no problem and design only matters then it would (maybe) be my second car. It looks very nice. But that's all. For a family, A6 estate (~25-30k) is a much better and cheaper choice. Even worse... For A7 money (~ 45-50k for 4-5y old) you can get an A8 (4-5y old), which is an insult to my brain.

Beautiful car, but I shudder to think about replacement costs for those fancy head and tail lights, active steering, active damping, dual clutch transmission or carbon deluged turbo DI engines. Or those baller wheels and tires. As with all Germans, lease it and never own.

Audi's usually come with a 4 year/50,000 mile manufacturers bumper to bumper warranty. Perhaps even an extended warranty up to 7 years/100,000 miles if you decide to purchase this or any German luxury car. How does that sound, Mr. Naysayer?

I’m leasing the 2019 A6 and within 6 weeks, had to bring it the shop twice now. Lower screen stop responding, auto headlight sensor malfunction, and creaking sunroof. I am glad I’m leasing, and will never buy an Audi just because of the reliability. The cost of an extended warranty is not even worth the money you would save by leasing vs financing. I may not even re-lease if these cars keep giving me troubles.

The dual screen setup in the center stack just looks awful. I can't think of any scenario where I'd want that shit.

    • @harambo9805
      @harambo9805 5 років тому +1

But it's a technologically more advanced dual screen set up. This is an Audi interior, not an Acura! Quit whining! 😁

I thought the same until I drove one. It’s very easy to use and there are still buttons for the very important stuff around that panel that don’t look like buttons in the video
