I’m new into TT’s I now have 2, a black 180 running around 215 which needs a brand new head fitted after the belt snapped (I have the parts but not the ability with timing.
I’ve just bought a Merlin 225 running 260 with a wide body kit, (Google Grubier MT Sport body kit, looks like the white car with the mk2 style front and large mesh side intakes for the inter coolers plus wide skirts and fat rear bumper with diffuser). Unfortunately this car also runs pops & bangs which is really not my thing so I’ll need a re-map and the p&b removed.
I absolutely wouldn’t touch Audi’s with someone else’s barge pole until the black TT was available for £900, I got it for £650 and clearing the customer’s bar tab (we own a freehold pub). I’ll be honest in that as great as the Merlin looks, (Merlin with a silk finish and the body kit in silver) I prefer the black 180 to drive, it doesn’t have the top end but up to national speed limit it was super rapid. I need to drive that car again and I will.
Any hoo, the reason for this comment is that you and Dom have made me feel part of the TT community, I intend to go to a meet or two, most likely in the Merlin because of the head issues in the black one (it’s called Ugly Duckling because it was neglected when I bought it but it will turn into a beautiful swan). Having said all this I think Papaya is my favourite colour but I can’t knock satin finished Merlin.
Finally thank you for your vids, your how to’s got my windows working and helped me change the oil breather on the Duckling. With current health issues of my own I’m unable to do anything involving lifting or crawling (recovering from appendix cancer and I’ll have a right hemi colectomy within about 3-4 weeks). My Duckling will be going into a local garage for the rebuild.
Final final question, I’m hoping the belt snapped incident will have only damaged the head, in your experience is that likely? The belt snapped as I pulled out of a junction from a stand still. I’m thinking that the pistons would basically just push the valves as there would be no compression so there should be no piston crown damage. I’m thinking I’ll ask the garage to do the work engine out as it will be easier to time and they can change all the fragile pipes while it’s out, the out and in will cost but all the other work will be far quicker and easier.
I recently found out there was a direct injection factory turbo vr6 version of the motor, is this true? Heard it was 2.5L or something like that. Love the car btw, I would love a 3.2 Mt though 😅
