But I hope I can pique some of you to aspire a career in health or dentistry :) It wasn't easy and I had a lot of regrets, but in the end - I made it! I didn't always want to be a dentist so some bad grades really held me back.... stay tuned if you want to learn more about overcoming your bad grades and achieving any goal no matter how impossible it seems!

    I cannot tell you how incredibly happy this video makes me! I am a 21 year old college student who has always wanted to be a dentist. However, once I got to college ( almost 1,000 miles from home) I lost sight of my goal. In high school I had never partied or had many friends due to strict parents and being shy. Once I got to college I didn't realize how important my grades were. I didn't put any effort into the easiest of classes, due to boredom and bad priorities. A couple of years down the road, I recently became an EDDA, thinking this might be as far as my education can take me. I've been really thinking hard the last year on whether I want to go into debt, and follow the path I've always wanted. My grades the first year and a half of college were one of the things really scaring me and holding me back. Thank you so much for posting this video. I still have some super scary pre-reqs I need to take for dental school, but I am going to try my hardest. I am so so so so relieved to know that my educational and professional future don't have to be over at 21 from lack of a commitment when I was younger. You are such a huge inspiration!!!

    This video was such a relief to watch!! Too often I watch videos of dental students who had perfect grades their whole life, always on top of everything, and studying literally all day every day. It's sooo nice hearing a real person that isn't so harsh about studying and school! This video it self gives motivation to us normal people who sometimes don't want to study!! Thank you for uploading. I just subscribed :)

    Thank you so much Dr. Wendy for making this video! I am working as an orthodontic assistant now, and at only nineteen and completing my undergrad... I LOVE DENTAL. I want to pursue a career in orthodontics, which is a branch of dental as you may know. This video has made me realize to not stress, and just take a class at a time because you are so right. It is OKAY to fail some things, because we are all human and aren't perfect. Best of luck to you and your career!

      Just some insight. The oral surgery residency program at Case Western Reserve here in Cleveland is very competitive. Dr. Wendy I am 32 years now and I am working my BSN now I am taking prerequisites classes in the college I feel nursing is very competitive and science classes isn’t easy for me. This semester is gonna be the first time I am taking biology and chemistry classes. Also, I passed with an A my English classes but still feeling my English isn’t enough to get in a university and reach my goal. I heard Nursing school has a lot of reading and writing and I want to change my major to dentist instead of nursing. My question is 😀 is dental school has a lot of writing?? I am not good for presentation too😌 I am the first one of my family that goes university lack of some information and motivation is destroying my dreams 😢

    It's a very interesting video. It's been my dream to go to dental school, I even shadowed my cousin, she's a dentist, and I loved it! However, I wasn't motivated... I did a non science bachchelors degree and now I'm 27 years old and I regret not doing the right thing when I was younger. I took some science courses in my state university and I didn't do so well because the classes were with more than 200 students and I couldn't do it... it wasn't a win situation for me because of the teaching setting so I got discouraged. Now I'm thinking about it again but I feel too old ... but I love your video! So encouraging

I have a really low GPA for my undergrad and I was wondering if I do my masters, will it improve my undergrad GPA? Thank you

      Every school has different requirements. Even if you don't want to be a science major, you just have to take the required classes. Most of them want you to take 2 bio classes with a lab, 2 gen chem classes with lab, 2 orgo classes with lab, 2 physics classes with lab. Other school want you to take biochem and some other science classes.

    Hello Dr, thank you so much for sharing all the good stuff with us. I recently came up with a question, I was hoping to use your experience in that regard. I have a bachelor degree in biology from outside of Canada and U.S. I contacted UBC to see if I'm eligible for admission or even take the DAT exam, but they told me they have to see my degree first. U think I have a chance anyway? Can foreign students take the DAT exam? I believe myself and I'm sure I can get a good result in the DAT exam, but most of my grades in my undergraduate period are not so high. U think they accept me for the four-year course of dentistry or I have to study from the zero point; get a Canadian bachelor degree in science? I would be really appreciated if you guide me through this process.

    I'm from Ontario. As a Canadian student, how did you finance a dental education in the US? Did loans from Canadian banks cover it, or did your parents help you? Did you need a cosigner? I checked out Detroit Mercy's website for dental School, and it's something like + $60,000 a year to go there. That is times 4 years, plus living expenses. Mind you, that is American dollars as well, so the costs would probably be like 500k Canadian or something crazy like that when all is said and done.

    • @DrWendy
      @DrWendy  7 років тому

      yup, i'm about a half mil in debt and i took out a private bank loan in Canada. It is prime interest rate but you do pay interest while you're in school. It worked out for all of us even though the CDN took a huge hit half way through school. It'll be several years before I can break even but we all turned out ok. Even for Americans financing American dental education it can be tough because their FAFSA loans are 7% interest rate compared to my 3%

    • @bgates275
      @bgates275 7 років тому

      Hmm, did you need a cosigner? I'm not sure about dental school, but as far as law schools are concerned, I hear that Scotia Bank is like the only bank that will give you a loan without one. I'd be interested to know which bank approved it for you, although push comes to shove, I guess there are only like 4 or 5 major ones, and it wouldn't be too hard to find out. I'm sure having your masters helped make you seem more reliable.

    • @bgates275
      @bgates275 7 років тому

      BTW, half a million is a lot of money, but I don't think it's insurmountable. My sister's ex's father is a maxiofacial surgeon. He nets a million a year, and has more money than he knows what to do with; Several personal homes, including one in Yorkville; properties in the Caymans; sent one of his children to Harvard. In fact, he even paid me $500 to shovel his driveway a few times, a while ago. LOL. Perhaps I've said too much, but I think you will be alright.

    • @DrWendy
      @DrWendy  7 років тому

      i got my loan from BMO but my classmates got them from all the different branches, mostly Scotia, RBC etc etc. I went with BMO because my dad already banked with them. Yes I did have a cosigner. Just go with whoever offers you the most money, because you'll need it. I think most of us capped at 150-200k and then we begged for more money later in the course. I'm not too worried about repayment because dentistry is ridiculously lucrative. I almost feel bad charging 200-300 per filling that takes me like 4 minutes. My boyfriend is also in the OMFS program too

    Hello Doc Wendy, im not sure what to do and I need help fast. Hopefully, you will see this. Back in 2011, I graduated with a BFA from art school with a 3.45 GPA and decided to take post bach science courses. I got caught up with the volunteering with my pre-D club and shadowing as both were very fun and exciting...I loved it. However, I lacked heavily in studying as I did not apply myself properly. Eventually, I ran out of money and could no longer attend school. My sGPA dropped so low that I cannot type it out here, literally. I then gave up on dentistry after getting fired for charging the dr for graphic work that she requested, something that I had to do from home. In this job, I set up the operatories, took X-rays and verified insurance.
    Fast forward to today: My mother passed away 1/26/17, and now I feel like I have not done too much of anything to have her proud of me beyond graduating college. I have not returned to school and I gave up on dentistry. Ive been trying to find something else to pursue as I now am 30 years old working at gap. However, I cannot find anything else that I am as knowledgeable as in dentistry but I feel like a loser and am now afraid of failing school like before. What should I do?

    Hi Dr. Wendy.. I am 28 years old and a non-science graduate , but my husband is a dentist which inspires me to pursue dentistry but there is this thought in my mind that I am old for dentistry as I still have to complete the pre-requisite courses and also I don't have any extracurricular dental experiences like being the member of dental clubs in school or college level etc .Do you think despite all this I still have a chance of getting into a dental school.
    P.S I am a recent permanent resident in Canada.

    Hi Dr. Wendy! This video made me so happy! My freshman year of college I decided to change my major from nursing to dental hygiene. At the time, my anatomy and physiology teacher was a dentist and he would always tell me that I should be a doctor or dentist. Well my sophomore year I finished all the pre requisites for hygiene and now (second semester of sophomore year) I'm thinking about doing dentistry. I have a 4.0 in my sciences, I've only gotten two Bs in speech and Comp II, should I not apply to the hygiene program and instead try for dentistry? This spring semester I'm going to be taking Biology I, Chemistry I, Spanish and History I to see if I can challenge myself. I have job shadowed two dentists and plan on doing another one in the next few weeks. Do you have any advice for me? Could I have your personal email?

    • @DrWendy

      I think you'll be great applying to dental school as long as you make the prereqs and do well on the DAT. I think dental hygiene is also good to get into but of course dentistry is more lucrative and desired as a profession! I think you should do what you think you will enjoy the most. I really do like cleaning teeth but I also really like esthetics of dentistry. Either way I get to meet a lot of people and help out patients. Let me know what you decide!

    I took dual credit in high school which means that i graduated with an associates in science after hs i went straight to a four year university and was gonna major in biology but i didn’t really like the university so i transferred closer to home and am now in my second year of college taking courses to be admitted into the schools dental hygiene program. so far i have 3 courses that gave questionable grades while all the other ones are good grades. i have one course i have to retake and one course on the verge of becoming a B or C and another a C or D the rest of my grades are pretty good. i was wondering what i should do if i want to become a dental hygienist. why career path would be better should i go to a tech school to become a dental hygienist faster or should i retake the courses instead and continue to try and get into the program?

    Hello I'm from Canada. When a school says intro to physics is recommended do I have to take it? They have perquisites posted on bullet points, but then there is a side note that says intro to bio, chem (which I have done) and physics is recommended

    i want to ask u an important question b4 joining dental school
    When i was at my O levels (10th grade) i had all sciences BIOLOGY, PHYSICS ,CHEMISTRY and MATHS
    but in my Alevel (12th grade) i had CHEMISTRY ,PHYSICS ,MATHS I didnt have BIOLOGY
    Can i join dentistry without ALEVEL BIOLOGY will i be able to cope up in dental school im worried bcz most courses r BIOLOGY at undegraduation of dental school

    • @DrWendy
      @DrWendy  7 років тому

      I would say that without core biology it will be a struggle.. a lot of first year classes are based around biochemistry anatomy and physiology. It is possible but you will be paying later a lot of time to catch up

  • @amandabekka6636
    @amandabekka6636 7 років тому

    Do you have any advice for studying in areas like chemistry and math? Those types of classes are hard for me to study in because it heavily math based and its not something like anatomy where you could just memorize. Math and chemistry you dont really have a step by step guide on how to solve things because just the way the question is phrased could change how you solve the problem

    • @blossombuddies2875
      @blossombuddies2875 7 років тому

      amanda bekka I'm only 13 but I'm supposed to be in the next grade math but a bunch of papers didn't come over and I ended up being in a normal class but I'm currently "the smart kid"
      Try to learn the general steps and use many different types of ways to do the problem. Learn different ways to solve it because some things work for specific problems while others don't.

    I'm only a sophomore in high school but i'm really thinking about perusing dentistry...in our schools now days they make us think about our careers early on and all our classes are dependent on what we wanna be so i'm taking health science now which basically just teaches us how to take blood pressure and something about CPR. i'm also taking microbiology and medical terminology...do you think these classes will actually be beneficial or necessary? and this is my first year of chemistry and im not sure science is my best subject and i know its huge thing in college... i just suck at it because of all the math and i suck at math... how big of an issue do you think it will be if i never get better?

    • @DrWendy
      @DrWendy  7 років тому

      it all depends on how your overall and science GPA turns out. Also there will be biology/chemistry on the DAT exam and programs will be looking closely at these scores! if you are poor at math then just do your best until you no longer have to take anymore math classes! (in dental school we do not take math but there are science-heavy courses)

    Hi Dr. Wendy!! I am so thankful that I came across your channel T_T Anyways, I am going to be a senior in college and ever since my freshman year of college, I've wanted to become a dentist. Why? Well I had braces for about 2-3 yrs and after visiting my general dentist almost every month, I just grew attached to the field. But I was never good at studying because I never gave it my 110% (was always distracted by kdramas and kpop). So currently I have ~2.7 GPA, which is definitely not enough to get into a dental school. My current plan is to either give up or do post bacc and apply to dental school (means I would have to take out a lot of loans). I just wanted to ask you for your honest advice and see if you saw any possibility of me getting into dental school if that makes any sense?? Because when I talked to my school's health advisor, he told me that becoming a dentist for me at this point would be very difficult and I was really discouraged by his words... I've also thought about becoming a hygienist but so many people around me discouraged me from going to that route because it's not a stable job and etc. I'm going to graduate college next year and I'm just so scared and worried for my future T_T Sorry for having a nervous breakdown on your channel Dr. Wendy!!!!

    • @DrWendy
      @DrWendy  7 років тому +1

      It is not too late, don't get discouraged! I didn't even know I wanted to become a dentist until I was finished graduate school... wayyy after I finished college and undergrad. Many of my classmates were even older, some in their 30s or 40s and just wanted a career switch. If it's truly what you want, you should pursue it

    okay my back story, d- in physiology having not taken anatomy and I got b- in chem 1 that semester. Got a D in chem 2 after that then retook it during a block course and got a B+. Then I took O-Chem and Anatomy together which was foolish, got an A in both lab and lecture for anatomy but F in O-chem and b + in lab.
    Im retaking O-chem and looking to finish with A- while getting a b or b+ in physiology retake, If i pull straight A's here on out my finishing science gpa will be about a 3.07 so pretty low. Thoughts on me still becoming a dentist?
