- In 2020, I decided not to continue my medical training in India and move abroad. What made somebody who was determined to live in India decide not to continue doing that? What are some of the things about the Indian medical education system that could drive away young doctors? Let’s discuss that and more in this video

Everything you said is so true. These were all the same reasons I had for coming to the uk. Now I am making 5 times more for less than half the work in India, plus there is no toxicity no verbal abuse and I actually enjoy work. No regrets at all and never going back to india

I had to take a casual leave to get an electrical work done at my apartment during my DM Cardiology residency first year (at the age of 33)
And about internship....we had no day off....it was an unsaid rule that internship meant 365 days of duty with no leave. The only leave i took in internship was the day i had to write my NeetPg exam
I completed my internahip a few months back. We had no holidays either. Had to take leave on day of neet pg, as well as on the day of convocation (which was held during our internship). I had to also go to my internship duties with 102 degree fever and everything… plus toxicity in certain departments…. I understand the huge patient flow will always make work stressful, no leaves, etc but then at least we can do without the toxicity which added to the already broken system kind of brings things to a new level.
@@AishiBhattacharyaOfficial its bcs India has shortages of Junior doctors. Also Indian education system doesn't want to compromise on quality of doctors like China Russia Ukraine universities, but 50% gets selected by quota system. It's an absurd system.

Indian doctors are the best among thier peers all over the world they treat highest ratio of patients and have great skills with india getting india getting industrialised lot of corporate hospitals are coming and with the growing aming indian npeople of health sector indians are spending money on bthierchealth care, moreve indian has a thriving black economyv and only 3ctob4 % of the population pay taxes indians are more rich thsn any american citizens or uk.

Sir I am a final year medical student and I was doing MBBS because of family pressure......I was peacefully studying suddenly next news came and I realised what Government can do....I got stressed about exam rather than the knowledge researched alot why should I do pg because people say Life set hai but when I saw people having mental health disturbed toxicity in residency in clinical branches and a person like me who need a 1-2 days vacation realised this is not for me ....i will rather choose non clinical rather than clinical or other options because I cant continue to be in a rat race and a herd of sheeps....there is a thing called peace which is important rather than very high salary toxicity long working hours and no day off Happy for your decision Sir🙏🤗

I am glad that you shared this. Having studied medicine in the "western world", there are unfair assumptions of docotors having studied abroad, that they probaby had it easier which as you have pointed out is absolutely not the case and in fact the exact opposite. My heart goes out to all the medical students everywhere, especially India and hope that more such positive changes get implemented.

As your junior from the same college, I can completely affirm to your reasons and I’m moving out too for the exact same reasons… not one less or more, I too had stressful exams, hectic internships and really want an adventure…though I decided to move out, I. did feel guilty sometimes when people around accuse me of gaining knowledge from patients here and not serving our country… yes I’m a proud Indian but this is really something which doctors undergo and people don’t understand. Happy to see that you too share the same thought!!!

The sheer honesty here is really appreciable. It's sort of throwing some light on what awaits a med student. It's scary, but a much needed reality check and a very very feasible option worth some discussion and thought, in the form of 'experience' from a senior. Thank you, sir.
Thank u so much. This is what I wanted to hear. I’ve suffered from clinical depression for months and was on meds. failed my exams and got into the odd batch. And at this point of life I see my friends work as interns while I’m struggling with my preparation and exams.
Failing exams and the struggle to keep up with academic and personal life has broken me down. And I’m glad that my parents are being supportive even though I feel like I doubt myself
I want you to listen to me closely bud. In one or two years, the fact whether you were in regular batch or odd batch will have no meaning to you. It will not affect your life/career in any way.
All that matters is how well you learn the subjects and how passionate you are about medicine.
Don't let medicine take over your life. Learn well, but take care of yourself.

Trust me nobody gives damn about attempts 2-3 years out of college.
thoughts of friends go through your mind again and again and consume your time for studies.
Just take a time off away from your usual medico friends and study alone
And exercise regularly

😎 What i think about education in India as a country is that quantity trumps quality.. there are pockets where there is quality(education and life) but mostly its done in mass. There is huge need for doctors in India and they need to respected and treated as humans from this century, work and life needs to be balanced. How many of your batch mates in collage have decided to work abroad?

There is too much competition in India.
A nation of 1.5 billion and we are easily replaceable.
The threat to survival and making ends meet is soo high in India.
As an IT employee of Capgemini, I would work ftom 8am to 2am in the night for 6 days.
All this for 38k a month.
I would sit in front on camera 90% of the time.
Permission to take breaks.
I would control my bathroom urge too.
No other choice.
Too much competition here.
I will be moving to Turin,Italy soon.
But Bangalore remains in my heart.
Namma Bengaluru.
The city that taught me many lessons.
I think the system is unsustainable in the longer run. Someday it will snap. Let's hope for the earliest.

In egypt , we had final exam on june /july and if someone fail on june exam then those students can give the exam on september and those who passed they have vacation upto september . So they have 3 months time to prepare for exam they failed and they will be in same batch after they pass the exam

You're right. This medical field is so toxic in it's own way. I am doing my medical degree at an Irish institute. Yes we get such a very long break. But that comes at its own expense as well. We get everything crammed up and expected to know everything and do well. Our department rotations are like 5 weeks only. By the time you enter and learn you're already done with it and have to sit for end of rotation exams. If you are unwell during that time or could not finish the syllabus then you won't be doing well. Many of us think that what's the point of rushing and cutting everything short for such a long break when we have to pay so much for the fees. But of course it is nice to have breaks longer than 2 weeks so that we can just rest after all the depressing exams. The pros and cons. But always an Indian doctor is almost always the best teachers.

Exactly the same at my med school in the UK. The other big downside is the fact that you only get one resit. So yes, if you fail exams you can resit them one month later. But if you fail that resit, you are kicked out of med school. That's literally the end of your medical career. My friend got kicked out after 4 years at medical school because he failed the resit. I think I'd take the odd batch over that any day.

@@DoctorAmedicinewe sure would have something to talk about if I ever met you, being a tour guide in a pretty european destination, I would get out of my way to give you the best tips for checking out places in your own time. Because of what you represent, it sounds great when you take pride in your roots.
Even if you are not back in India in 10-15 years I am sure you will be setting up a student campus (along with traffic and city planning, together with a team) there or something similar, just to help future students.
I have very similar reasons to why I moved to UK post mbbs... I never had imagined going abroad but during internship last year I decided to do so due to various reasons. I still love my country a lot and I hope to come back after I CCT.

I am in 3rd year drop as neet aspirant but planning to take partial drop.
One think we need to understand is that India is compitative and will be as we r a country of billion nd hv biggest number of youth. Its just means u r replaceable thats also the reason why cost of man power is so low becoz if u want to do that in that amounts then there's thousands standing who will do it. It's not anyone's fault.
I don't support brain drain but can understand, everyone want easy life that's why never blame anyone for going elsewhere . It's hurts that our country growth will slow down a little with this phenomenon. But it is how it is. 🤷
I also going abroad but then think if we all go outside then this cycle will keep going. Country toh vhi ki vhi hi rhe jayegi. With this tought I again make my mind that i will stay here. Atleast i don't future generation to face this.
And it's request to never blame and said negative things to those Indian who leave by some patriotic line. I take this in positive way that it's not like this will impact us hugely they r just 0.000000001% of our population so those who r here focus on ourself. And one more 😅, there's was a time when foreigners invaded us but now reverse uno. Indians r everywhere. Brain drain is just good thing, it's reducing country's load. And increasing our global presence in other word soft power 😁😁😂😂. We truly r peaceful country they invaded us cleverly and mercilessly but we r taking visa to invade them. 😅

In our state West Bengal we have almost 36 hr on call days , starting 8 am today finishing at around 6-7 pm the next day…. With no sleep at night. We used to envy people from other states with 24 hr oncall days only. No day off as such, except few Sundays.

We had literally no vacations. 4 days of holiday during Durga puja vacation and 2 wks off before university exam for preparation. No summer or winter breaks. :)
Academic debar is a huge deal to anybody's career and I totally agree that teachers have their own bias for some students. You are listing out the real problems Indian system has.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am a non-traditional doctor - did engineering in India then went to medical school in the US. I sometimes wonder what medical training in India would have been like. Medical school in the US was not toxic like in India. However, residency that I did (before current duty hours restrictions came into force in 2003) was quite toxic and intense in surgical specialty that I trained in. It was very much like what you experienced in your internship year but ran through the entire 5 years of training.
Bcz of this intense training indian dr are respected so much in all over world

Some one has spoken the sheer reality of our medical training system. This kind of unhealthy growth is normalised in our society. Working without breaks and holidays is normalised. Working for 48 hrs straight is seen as normal in medical profession. Which is totally wrong. No one there to change the system. And I hate it. I m glad that you ve spoken something which is unspoken by medical fraternity. And I hate glorifying these kind of a stupid system. Putting yourselves and patient lives in danger. Imagine treating cases and operating on sick cases after working of our 24 hrs straight. Doctor s yell at patients due to this stress levels and patient looses respect on doctor due to the same reason. You ve done the right thing bro. Happy for you. 😅
Maybe this is why we need a lot more medical graduates in the country, so that the ones in training are rotated appropriately and are not grilled to such an extent for their training. Needless to say, it is hazardous the amount of hours some of these junior doctors are required are required to put in, not just for the doctor but for the patients involved as well.
While I totally understand why people are leaving india to study abroad and settle down, i can tell this with certainty that training in India prepares you for anything that the world of medicine can throw at you. Yes its harsh and yes it seems hellish but when you're finally done with NEET PG and ur MD/MS course things get much better and you definitely end up a more competent doctor.
One of the main issues with basically 99.9% Indians is that 1. The attitude of slavery is in their genes, anything foreign is Pure, The Best & Heavenly. 2. The inherent nature of NAFRAT against their own culture / traditions / anything that is Indian. 3. Finally, Indians are one of the least Patriotic people on this planet. 4. If these so called doctors were born in a foreign country and had tried to become a doctor, THEY WOULD REALIZE HOW HARD / TORTUROUS IT IS TO BECOME A DOCTOR. Anyway, Hey foreign-obsessed dcotors, Don't worry your kids will keep you in your pants once they grow up. Hope Life reminds you what Bharat is. Lastly, it is not to say that what you guys are saying , is not happening. You could not stand up and make a difference, So you chickened out & ran away.

If you are a doctor already, keep aside of your thoughts of doing residency in India. Always try to do pg residency from abroad. And if u r mbbs students now , hard luck dear more and more uncertainties are waiting for you in India. Myself is an assistant professor in a govt med school in India since 2018. I am now in the process of moving abroad.

I'm just about to enter a medical school, as I gave NEET on 7th May. I need to say this, I'm that kind of student who with the minimal amount of study, can do exceptionally well on exams. But this fact might change in medical school. I need to study 24 x 7 and recently a bro said that I won't be getting a single off day in med school. Since I'm from Bengal there are a lot of festivals throughout including Durga Puja and missing out on that, I've never even imagined. Also, being an adventurous guy, I like going out to new places quite often and try photography, but now I feel for this, my dream will be crushed. I know my dream is to be a doctor but for that how can I kill my passion? For this reason I've decided to move out of the country after internship. Which country to opt for, do you have any idea, prof, sis ?

I need your opinion on this.Why didn't you choose usmle sir? Also I don't see a massive difference in payscale between India and UK if we consider the UK cost of living and the need to do locums to actually sustain the inflation. Also the flight charges to and fro back home will leave us with few lakhs in the end as savings. In India I will be done with pg at 28 probably and earn 1-2 lakhs. And we start training in the UK at 27-28. Just want to know your reason for UK over US:) No offense UK is great as well. Great video ❤

I am from Nepal with similar story. Only differences being, Rs 11000/month as a resident's salary and not a good pay or satisfaction even after being a consultant.

In KA there is a lunch break lmao. I burst into laughter when I saw it. In WB there is NO break. When u sit in OPD, u sit there till the last patient.
Apparently residents leave by 7pm. In WB no resident can leave before 10pm. During my internship I regularly left at 11-11:30, residents left at 12-12:30 but this may be an exception.
Not to mention the trend of doctors being beaten up by relatives of patients

Yes, cleaning the system is not easy, but I feel its my duty to live here, and change the scenario.

I’m very glad you came to take care of us, though I am aware that the NHS does suck in much needed Doctors and nurses from Commonwealth countries. We should have greatly expanded our medical schools years ago but there is still too much elitism and “this is how we’ve always done it” in the Medical profession.
With the way students suddenly moving out of india via plab could you make a video as to how uk is better ,not these general points ,but if there’s more to it than the eyes can see,but isn’t it that india has so much patient load compared to the uk because of the population size ,so you’d obviously learn better here right?
.. i feel if you not able to clear a exam in stipulated period ... i feel you are lucky you are more experienced then those who clear in first attempt..... because you have more time to understand things clearly i don't mind becoming a doctor in double the time .... i had come across many Doctors are just MBBS ... but far better in their treatment.................... Good luck with your training and yes you are and going to be a very good GP here in UK but what you got to say about the talk going on in medical professionals that some, I repeat ,some so called with medical degrees from India who are here working for NHS,especially for GP training are being under the radar for not having the genuine qualifications.I am not surprised..are you?
