  • Two-time world record holder, arguably the best clean and jerker in the world, Karlos Nasar, has never beaten Antonino Pizzolato. But why? He's won a world championships, he's set multiple world records, but as soon as the mentally tough Italian, Antonino 'Nino' Pizzolato turns up to compete things don't go so well for Karlos.

    The difference is that Karlos was coming out of an injury when he lost to Nino, and when he made the world record in Columbia his long time personal weightlifting coach had just passed away. I know people here like to think there is competition between them, but that's not the case. If he Karlos stays away from clubbing and chalga, he will be the best in the division easily.

    Hi, sport psychology consultant here (bachelor's & 1-year master's).
    I think your analysis is interesting and makes a compelling video. It is however very speculative. Maybe you've spoken to Karlos and know his reasons. If so, I apologize. Otherwise, psychological aspects such as nervousness, confidence, self-efficacy etc. plays important roles in performance but it is impossible to know what factors played which role without talking to the individual. Even then it's often very speculative. Sure Karlos could have been nervous or intimidated by Antonino. He could have also been too hyped or focused during his lifts. He could even have been to calm and not have taken the lifts seriously. There are also external factors like issues with family, partner, friends etc. and other factors like injuries, preparation and sleep. To summarize, although your analysis makes a compelling video it's very speculative whilst being presented as factual.

    • @NONO-hz4vo
      @NONO-hz4vo Рік тому +13

      When you have been around the sport and the athletes a long time you understand the psychology in a real world sense, not in something you learned in a classroom. I will take the opinion of someone who has 1000's of hours on the platform, in the training halls, and in person communication over someone who has some generic classroom theories.

    • @kebabrepubliken1
      @kebabrepubliken1 Рік тому +10

      @@NONO-hz4vo Hi. You can trust who you want. I would argue that just being in places and talking to people does not make you an expert. I've been around computers all my life, I don't know how to make one or the inner workings on a deep level. I've also trained most of my life but I'm not an expert in physiology or anatomy. I do think that having experience can give you useful knowledge though. But it's easy to fall for confirmation bias which can easily go unchecked in those environments. I'm not saying that academia is perfect but it's more than just generic classroom theories. My degree included applied work under supervision, lectures from PhD's and professors who have multiple years experience of working with elite athletes and national teams/Olympic teams, and researching.
      If you don't care about degrees, I also have 400+ hours as a coach and about 100 hours of applied sport psychology consulting experience in addition to my degrees.

    • @rather-reverend
      @rather-reverend Рік тому +4

      Speculative? Sure. But Seb also know these guys pretty damn well - and he ALSO has a deep knowledge of the scene in general and the mind games involved in elite lifting. For my part, I grew up about 20 km from Nino's home town, so I'll always root for him - but I have a hunch that the next Europeans will be the meet where Karlos takes a step forward.

    • @kebabrepubliken1
      @kebabrepubliken1 Рік тому +2

      @@rather-reverend Hi Mike. Yeah that's fair and if he's spoken with Karlos about it I'll apologize. However, I think a lot of people overestimate the knowledge you get from just being around people. Take math or English as an example. People spend several years practicing English and math several times a week from an early age with supervision from teachers. Even so, few are linguist or mathematicians and a lot of people are very lacking in both departments. Just being around people, or practicing something doesn't make you an expert. There's also a stigma around sport psychology and a lot of people don't openly talk about being intimidated by current rivals. As such, I doubt (not impossible but improbable) that Karlos has openly mentioned all of the information in the video to Seb.
      I also hope that he'll manage to perform up to his potential!

    • @tinuswl
      @tinuswl Рік тому +3

      @@kebabrepubliken1To add to your point, since their restructuring in 2016(?) team Italy has multiple sports psychologists present for the athletes. I think they have two permanent ones on base.
      On the flipside, I think mental health around sports and in general is still under a heavy stigma in Bulgaria and athletes are more likely to suffer in silence even if something is actively bothering them or can be improved.
