I thought I was a visual organizer, but since I rid myself of excess stuff, and freed up a lot of storage space, I discovered I actually like things hidden for the most part. There are a few things that need to be out so I don’t forget about them, but this is an exception rather than the norm.

Oh I love the file folder from dollar tree wire separator. Hubby is a stacker, but will use an upright file sorter if it’s prepared for him. I am totally going to make these for him to hang on the wall. The ones I could find were astronomical in price. Do you have a video on the lazy clutter? Our home is 75% lazy clutter. Hugs to you! My thoughts, first if they don’t put things away will you do it for them? Then stop for a while so they have a reason to do it. Second, as a adult I realised parents growl at their kid, especially teens, that their room is a mess do fix it but do they ever Ask why?
Like maybe clothes is all over surfaces because their actual home is not organized in a way that makes it easy to find and put away. Or maybe they Need to try things on to Know so maybe a Big bin where they can temporary put tried on clothes. Etc etc:)
At the end of the day, if ppl really dont want to and face no real consequence, they won’t.

I have MS, and have limited energy. I had to tell my kids, “When I go to clean, I don’t have enough energy to pick up your stuff first. I will give you a warning, then I’ll be tossing whatever I have to pick up.” After a few times of them running to the wheelie bin to retrieve things, they took it seriously.

I am a visual organizer, but I have to put my arts and crafts stuff in boxes - and sometimes these boxes in cupboards. So what I do is simple: I photograph the open boxes and when they are in the cupboard I photograph that as well.
And then I transfer this photo information onto my computer and meticulously name every photo with box number and which cupboard it is in. That is a giant task, but I only have to do it once and update it occasionally. And saves so much time when I don't have to search for things - and clutter everything up in the process.

About a month or so ago, I stored dirty dishes in my over for the first time in over 30 years (I'm not sure I have done it before). I did it because I needed a time to get it all done and not feel overwhelmed by the clutter until i could. We often put our leftover pizza, a sheet pan of cornbread or dessert in the oven and then absent mindedly preheated the oven. Because I almost re-baked a pizza in the box a couple of weeks before, I've resorted to sticking a sticky backed arrow to my oven knob. That way I see the arrow, that way it triggers my brain that I left something in there. I have warped a couple of spatula handles by not remembering something is in the oven 🥺🤣😂🤣🤔

My son is now 24 and I occasionally say to him my feelings about my bin theory and he’s so wonderful he says I will do it ..and he honestly means it ..problem is he officially has short term memory problems so he forgets he’s offered, ( it’s all fun and games in this house , but I adore him 😉) and I just end up doing it 😏. The day before garbage pickup day, my google calendar reminds me to open the electric garage door and roll the wheeled garbage tote down to the curb! It works for me!

Sarah ... have you tried a tickler file system??
Most people have 12 file folders for each month and 31 folders for each day of the month. . . however i made mine with 12 monthly hanging folders plus 7 hanging folders for each day of the week. . .i simply don't need the 31 days added.
I also added one for 'Loose paper' i find laying around the house. A 'Quick Reference' folder and a 'To File' folder to temporarly hold papers til i can do some filing. A lot of times items in the 'To File' folder is no longer relevant by my filing day and can be discarded.
When a paper comes in your house file it in the month or month before it requires action. If it doesn't require action but needs to be kept either pop it in the To File folder or quickly add it to your long term reference filing system. If there's something that needs to be done but has no paper simply write a note to drop into the appropriate month or day of the week. On the 1st of the month or a few days before, look thru this months and the upcoming month to see if there's anything you can put in the 7 daily folders. . . It's vital to regularly check your folders (daily and monthly) first of each month and first of each week. . . It all sounds waaay more complicated than it is! It's actually very easy to set up and maintain.
Since i will be looking at my tickler file all the time, i splurged a bit and bought my hanging folders in a gorgeous pink kept in a frosted file bin.
This has been a MASSIVE life changer for me.
Years ago i made a tickler file in a 5x8 binder that worked ok (and very portable) but it became a hassle to find the binder, open to the correct page wiggle a paper in there and then the same routine when retreiving paper out of it. . .with a hanging system it only takes micro seconds to pull up slightly the folder by the tab, to drop in or retrieve a paper.
Hope this helps you and others as much as it's helped me. 👍😉

Cass, in the past I was that slob you were talking about! You made me laugh because it hit home! I do think though, that it's not laziness. I was and am a busy, energetic person, lots on the mind and ready to help anyone! We get so busy at life we can't do it all. I am a perfectionist, plus I focus on one thing with passion, other things get in the way, which then they're not done. I was the only one that took the garbadge out! My family would let it pile up like some DR. Seuss pile!(tall tower, teetering) I was rocking my baby to sleep, %@!# the garbadge! Then in the late hours after the baby went to sleep, I would crawl in bed! Waking often during the night for baby needs. The day would start over, never getting to the garbadge! Don't know why no one else in the family didn't take it out. Anyway, good realistic video!

I've got a "in plain sight, still out of mind because it's booooooring and possibly exhausting" problem... I don't tend to collect a lot of clutter, but when I do it is stuff I need to deal with and just... don't. It's mostly organized clutter, and some of it has gone through several organizing systems already or changed its home, but it really, really should just be dealt with, and then it could be gone for good...
(Was that a "tell me you've got ADHD without telling me you've got ADHD" kind of revelation? Maybe...)

I find that the discount shops (like Action = what we call our DollarTree over here ) many times have a limited stock or supply. Or we can order on Amazon, but shipment can be pricey. A rental and I am still transiting from another state. This organizes the whole house . We both don’t have any furniture which we bought a few essentials for the time being .you don’t need fancy stuff . White bins devised up cleaning supplies under the bathroom, our pjs , under garments, spices , paperwork.etc .
A huge thing I found was put it away as soon as it comes. When I shop or have deliveries I open it completely and find a home and get rid of the trash.I also put my receipts properly in my purse .

Best tip I ever gave myself (and can share with other recovering non-cleaners lol)
Is to line your kitchen trash bins with TWO trash bags!!! Then whenever it periodically unexpectedly leaks, you just put the trash bag down into the bin, tie the second bag/liner and throw away both bags (instead of the normal just one bag)!
This way, you NEVER need to clean out a leaked in smelly kitchen trash bin again!!!! Bc seriously, what's the chance that both of those bags will leak at the same time??? Like pretty much never!
So I'm almost always only throwing away one bag, and then relining a new bag into the bin again so it's double lined still, so it's not wasteful.
But n the off-chance when it DOES leak, I just throw away the trash with BOTH trash bags and I don't have to clean the kitchen trash bin!
Bc NO ONE EVER wants THAT stinky smelly job! YUCK!

I know it can get discouraged when watching me and tidy people and whatever you're buried in clutter for those that are. I'll try to know that there's hope That's also good to know that they're okay There's nothing wrong with them that they're default mode is messy even if they get clean. ❤ And also knowing that whenever life happens typically we end up referring back in a default mode and that's okay. ❤ We can always get back on the wagon.

So been there on the melted stuff in the oven! My rules after that were, only metal and ceramic dishes in the oven, plastic things in a tub in the fridge. Also, you can hide A LOT of dirty dishes in your dishwasher if you have one, just cram it full rather than stacking properly. Just don’t let any helpful guests try to put their dirty dishes in the dishwasher!😄 Re garbage - we never leave it anywhere but indoors or in the shed - we have bears. In the interest of putting the container where you leave the stuff, can you put a raccoon-proof garbage can somewhere close to a door?
