Same here welll I haven’t done it for a year I am just leaning in to it. I am looking forward to it! Probably going to do it from home to pottery Class.
Just started a pottery class and was told to find some videos to watch between classes. Found this and it was a perfect reinforcement of what they discussed in class. Thanks!
I made the worlds shittiest cup today with some clay I was offered at uni, but I’m proud of it. Thanks for giving me a heap of helpful info to help me do better next time

Thank you for this. ❤May 11th is the day my husband and I got married. May 11th 2022. We are coming up on our 1 year anniversary 🎉. Thanks for the beginner tips 😊
I feel like my glazing is so boring... It has taken me a while to warm to your drips but I've been playing with Amaco's more fluid glazes and I'm hooked on layering and flowing colors. I know you did a video in the past, but I'd love to see more glazing tips.
Hi Jon. Good high level overview. I would love to hear some of the less common “tips and tricks” at each stage to help potters who want to make high quality pots. I know you have these in many other videos but I could see a follow on video for each stage that is a complication of your best practices. As I have been practicing and connecting with potters I am picking up things like how they ensure smooth bottoms, how to avoid drips on kiln shelves, etc. one video for each stage that pulls this together could be awesome!
you could see about me .......avoid dripping : if you have a glaze that drips but with a expression jou love , dont change the formular ...the expression can get lost .....you must yourself ...think up ! a method that dripping not reaches shelve , and try out by firing , maybe again and again............
I think I remember you mentioning in a previous video that you might do a video that gets into the details of e-commerce and such. I was wondering if you would be interested in sharing some of the ins and outs of using Etsy, maybe something about why you use it, your opinions for how to charge for shipping, packaging, warranty etc... I'm sure a lot of people who can't sell their stuff in person right now would be into it!
you mentioned digging up your own clay, any chance of more videos regarding homemade clay in the future? I've been experimenting with it a lot but would love to see your take on it the whole process!

I wonder if you'd ever be interested in doing a "What happens in the kiln" basics? Vitrification, why greenware is water-soluble but once it's bisque it will last forever... It's so fascinating and there are NO videos explaining what's up. :)
great video. i have wanted to do this since i was like 16. never tried yet! stumbled upon your videos last month and you got me interested again. Can you do a video on what people would need to start (wheel kiln etc)? Thanks
You should make a video on what it’s liked to be an Etsy seller, to give insight to those you might have inspired to want to sell their own pottery... and how they can profit and maybe even make a living out out it! I think it would be a really cool video!
Do you have any recommendations for a teenager looking at buying a potters wheel? I took a class in school last year and loved it, but due to quarantine I can’t visit any studios and my family is considering the option of purchasing a wheel instead. I know it’s uncommon for a beginner to own one (especially at my age) and the situation would likely be complicated by the need for a kiln, but if you have any advice or opinions on the matter I would really appreciate it. I love your videos!
As a beginner icant get all these machines ,I expect that i will find what I really need , so if u have a different ways and simpler fs without those machines try to share it!thanku
Dehydroxylation and Vitrification. I taught those two terms to my ceramics students so that would be the only thing that you could add to the video to help people understand what exactly happens when the pieces dry out and fuse together after firing.😜
Ok so this might be a stupid question: As a COMPLETE beginner, does it make sense to get a pottery wheel right off the bat? Are there other things I should focus on before purchasing one or is really just about throwing yourself into it?
can you tell your story about how you start your own pottery studio? also can you give some advice for young starters who have a plan to build their own pottery studio for the first time. thankyou. btw i just seen this video bcs i start to curious and interest about being a pottery artist, and how they really manage their own workplace. thankyou 😝
Question: Is there a way to prevent the mold or discoloration on the bottom of my mugs and bowls? No one ever mentions the condition of their pottery after a number of uses.. Mine gets so dirty or moldy I need to sand it off with my diamond sanding sponges every so often. Thanks
I have been extracting clay out of the soil from my back yard, having a hard time finding and information on firing temperatures. Any suggestions would be helpful.
here I am trying to watch videos of the fabled relaxing pottery making ASMR and find myself in the midst of a neurotic cacophony of noises, faces, effects and "so excited s" lmao, great info though thanks and there goes my feedback yay woo hey ah
Excellent video. Wish it was around when I started potting as you explain it really well. Like watching your videos...like I said you explain processes well. Loved watching your son potting. He's very cute.
I want to get into making pottery & I can’t find any classes locally (southern MN). They are mostly in the twin cities area. And now classes are on hold due to covid. What would you say the best route would be to learn?
I bought a cheap wheel. I have it set in my bathroom (its pretty crowded, to say the least) .... but cant complain of spending to much time in there to. it is messy but I am loving it even at every mistake I do. I van be frustrating at the beginning... but the best way to learn is hands on.
Jon, I love your videos and share them frequently. Thank you for producing them. Also loved the reverse throw snippet. As a beneficial addition, It would be nice to see the same sized pots thrown in each of the stages to see how much they have reduced in size after the bisque and glaze stages. When I first started, I didn't realize how much larger I needed to throw to end up with the right finished size. Do you do anything to measure them on the wheel for consistency?
Plus one to this question! Do you have any tips for knowing when it is fully bone dry and ready for the kiln? If there is moisture still left, what happens?
@@justinedungo7706 if there’s moisture inside they clay still it can explode in the kiln, learned this in my ceramics class in high school, and it usually takes 2-3 days for it to become bone dry
I’m a beginners in pottery. I noticed you had the mug you threw on a square bat that was not attached to the wheel and lifted the mug off with the bat attached. Could you tell me what you used. Thank you for your tutorials!
Hi Jon. I am a beginner and appreciate your tutorials. Questions...Which name brand wheel would you reccomend, also, I noticed a square board on top of your actual wheel. Am I correct in saying so. Please explain and as a beginner, what Materials do I need. Thanks Andrea NYC
Might be an obvious answer, but is “bone dry” pottery the kind of texture that you can still scratch off the material with your nail or leave nail marks?
Can I ask a newbie question? If I make something just from clay and let it dry (not using the bisquefire) , is that enough to use, like making a key holder for my home?
Thanks for the videos. I am considering getting into this to help me relax. Working with my hands tend to help me relax. I have been getting a lot of tension headaches lately so time to find a tension outlet. Would you say this is a good choice?
I'm here for the same. I imagine it is relaxing, cause once you get the hang of it you can probably choose to either focus or let your mind run free while having your hands busy.
Just getting started in pottery. SOOO much to learn!!! You said your sale in May is central time. Where are you located? I'm central time also, Wichita, KS. Just curious. Love you and your wife's videos and pottery. Watched the luminaries yesterday. I'm digging those and feel confident that one day I WILL make one!! lol. They are beautiful! Too bad you didn't get home with all of the ones from your wedding that you made. That had to have taken a long time!!! Thanks for sharing instructions and your pieces.
Hello Jon, I am living in the suburbs of minneapolis. Do you knwo of any beginner level pottery classes that are currently open that have more than just a single day for the 2-3 hour sessions? I am brand new at throwing pottery and going to be starting with limited experience from sculpture making.
Hey man thanks for the vid, if I have a leatherhard/bonedry project that wasn't finished but I wanted to modify it do I just soak it in some water or do I have to pulverize it and completely start over? Basically how do I make it malleable again?
Hey Jon! Would you mind sharing what kind of shelving you used in your new studio? Did you build it or did you order it from somewhere? We are building a new studio soon and love your shelving!

Which part for colouring with underglaze? Is it before bisque or after bisque? Thanks
