There's a local Japanese store that sells handmade teaware... Yeah, I'm definitely buying a full set after seeing how much goes into making this beautiful ART
I am not an artist and not even remotely a potter, and still I watched the whole 25 minutes of your video without skipping. Such a careful, meticulous process, narrated scientifically. Such great work! So amazed to learn how the humble cup is made.
This is one of the most captivating videos I have ever experienced. I didn't give a shit about pottery going into this, but I watched the entire video because of how great the narration was.
Imagine someone sharing A-Z of their business in such a detail. In conclusion: Pottery cannot be done by everybody. It is the talent and years and years of practice. And he knows he’s the best at it
Yup, this goes for a lot of creative, personalized works. It’s unique to its creator. Even ppl in the same field would end up w/ a different result since they’re working w/ their hands, their minds. Through that you can see traces of their experiences and viewpoints. It shows through their works. It’s really interesting how our personal creative process can make products that are uniquely us.
I discovered your channel after my first pottery class. Next week I’ll be signing up for an 8 week class and I plan on documenting my journey. You’re an inspiration.
That's certainly true I think. All my favourite cups to drink from were made by my friends and potters I aspire to. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
This video makes me want to buy from smaller businesses. You can almost feel how everything is made with love and a lot consideration. Every piece has his own unique touch to it and i love that. 🥰✨
I was just thinking the same thing. Yesterday I saw some expensive ceramics and ask myself: how hard can it be? Searched and found this. The answer: very.
Not only is it much harder to do than most people comprehend, but there’s the hours and hours of work that goes to make it even feasible to produce numbers of pieces as similar as possible. There’s the experience that makes the lips of cups comfortable to drink from, or spouts that are capable of pouring. There’s working with the glazes, which trust me, isn’t intuitive. Most glazes don’t look anything like their fired counterparts, look different depending on temperature, and can be radically different depending on a reducing or oxidising kiln burn. Then there’s paying for the power for the kiln. Be it gas, electric or even wood fired, the fuel has to be paid for. Glazes can be bought or compounded by the potter, but either way, it has to be paid for. Clay body has to come from somewhere. Even if the potter digs and purifies their own clay, it costs money to dig raw material, store it, purify it. Or you can buy it prepared, and accordingly more expensive. And finally ofc there’s actually making the pieces. A production potter brings that time down to a minimum, but it’s still an important expense, plus there’s the electrical power used to produce pieces, for light, heat and the wheel. Tbh very few handcrafters are paid what their work deserves, but settle for, hopefully, something that is livable.
As a person who is fascinated with ceramics and somebody who wants to start doing something with stoneware in near future I would have never imagined that I would find a video with so much practical knowledge packet in it. Thank You.
Thank you, Florian! This is a breath of fresh air here on UA-cam. You've explained every step and the reason for it in more than adequate detail. I have a new appreciation for the pottery cups that I use daily. I will happily pay the price for a well-formed and processed cup. You're a Master Potter!
Watching the amount of skill going into these coffee cups makes me appreciate my local potters' works even more. Usually as artists, we get questioned why our works are so expensive. However, I think it's important customers and clients understand why the cost is as it is- the amount of skill, the time spent refining those skills and producing these creations, etc going into a product/piece.
I started doing pottery and someone in my class suggested Florian's videos, and said it's super helpful to learn as a beginner. It really is, thank you very much.
OMG, bless you! For making pots and cups ORIGINALLY. I Wish we will not let a 30.000 BC year old craftmanship go away. Love these video´s! Thankyou thankyou thankyou. Lots of love from The Netherlands!💛
A world of difference between handmade and factory-made. Hand-made has so much love in it. Factory-made is loveless. The first is art. The second plain mechanics. This video is done in expert fashion. Must be shown in pottery/ceramics class.
i spent the last month volunteering at a studio ran by an older (& miserable) woman in hopes to learn more about this medium & how to use a kiln. i left one week ago after weeks of being yelled at for calling student's pieces "beautiful", or not knowing how to do something i was never taught. also, she never used this wax but it does miracles. wow. i am now learning & unlearning everything from your videos. thank you for sharing, i am at peace after watching this.
Everyone got the point, it's an amazing content, that he could sell for a few bucks, but it's here... free of charge for us. We should hit like to show some appreciation
You can clearly hear the the passion for the craft on the potter's voice. Thank you for sharing your craft. I was trying to show my 4 year old how cups are made before putting him to sleep and ended up watching all 24 and a half minutes of you. Thank you for this. You gained two fans. My son was blown away :)
I've just recently started my pottery journey and trying so hard to learn. I watched your step by step video the whole time I was practicing last night. Pottery is NOT easy but your videos have helped me to keep going with it. I'm still so awful at throwing and have caught myself getting so frustrated at myself. Thank you for sharing your amazing tutorials, they truly have helped me so very much. I love your work!!
Going to be really studying your videos this semester. Ceramics has always been daunting to me, and now I have to take the class to meet the class requirements for my major. So far it has been astoundingly helpful in assisting me with understanding the overall process. I feel that with your videos as reference, I may just survive this. Thank you on behalf of all of us struggling students.
So pleased to hear that Gala, I hope my videos have some useful information in them somewhere! Best of luck with your potting and major and thanks for taking the time to watch.
i’m in my last semester of senior year and i’m only now taking ceramics and really falling in love with clay! i love these videos, thank you for showing us your incredible process :)
First time viewer here... I clicked on this video fully expecting to skip through and just get the gist, but oh my god. I was absolutely transfixed by everything about this.
I have a school art project that involver pottery and watching your videos gives me so much inspiration these are easily the highest quality videos for pottery i have seen thank you so much because you just sparked a passion that may last a life time and i cant wait to start
Wow, who knew making a pottery cup required so much skill and patience! Impressed by the dedication of the artist here. Definitely makes me appreciate handmade crafts even more now. 😊👌
I loved watching the process. I’m holidaying in Muskoka Ontario in Canada, I visited many potters and bought these dark chocolate mugs and bowls. I gravitate toward hand made. They feel cared for and they mean something… like a connection. I spoke with the potter he was lovely and now I’ll think of John when I’m enjoying my coffee.
I watched this a few years ago.... Found it again. Amazed all over again. Such great detail and step by step instructions. This is a valuable gift he has given us💙
What an interesting trade. Gotta be honest, I envy those whose living exhibits creativity and passion. But then again, I can only imagine the sacrifices and discipline put into such work.
I never -in my life- thought I'd be interested in pottery one day! Because of your great art, I joined a hand-building complementary course in the college I go to (unfortunately it's not as "hands-on" as I'd hoped for due to covid restrictions, however, I still played around with some clay at home and it was so much fun!) I see myself trying it out further -hopefully in better circumstances- in the future! Truly inspirational :D
That's so wonderful to hear, I imagine learning ceramics in person at the moment must be a real pain due to the restrictions, like you said, it's so hands on. Best of luck potting at home and I'm so glad to hear you've been enjoying it!
watching this i'm actually quite embarrassed, because i used to think u just put all the glazed pottery in the kiln, set the temperature to 1200°c and call it a day..... it's crazy impressive how much work there is behind professional handmade pottery. this video was amazing to watch and makes me appreciate work like this SO much more. you're doing such a great job!!
Such a beautiful and also painstaking process, really makes you appreciate pottery. Just beautiful. I would love to have a cup of tea out of one of those gorgeous cups.
This is such a lovely video in so many ways. The time taken to show every step, your very soothing narrative, and your description of every step makes it as though I’m reading one of my favorite books. Thank you for sharing. Great video. Every step explained perfectly and so relaxing and fascinating to watch at the same time. I made my own clay out of clayish soil and will try to make a cup out of of it this summer; wish me luck.
The filming and narration is done so beautifully and elegantly i didn’t notice 25minutes passes by 🧡
