Great beginners video even for someone who has been watercolor painting for 3 years. It's good to go back to the basics and you teach it so well! Thank you for sharing your talents.
Thanks so much Bill. I've watched many 'beginner's videos, only to find that the tutorial assumes a level of competence which is slightly daunting. Yours was truly inspirational!
Thanks Delphine, I will be doing a few more in this series but the next video will be on skies and clouds (x6) so I hope you enjoy that one when its posted :)
I practised my first watercolor landscape using this video. I've been watching so many different channels and they seem to think "beginner" means basic level. I have zero level, haha... I have never owned watercolor paints or paper until a few days ago. I really enjoyed this tutorial. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Hi Bill, Lovely simple painting but still very efective. If ever you get a chance, could you do a video of a pretty in depth explanation of how to create the texture in expanses of lawn or short grass (like in your painting Portmarnock Golf Course County Dublin Ireland) and where to place the texture so it looks natural please? I know that I keep asking you these questions but you are one of the few people on here who actually listen to and try to help people who are struggling with certain elements of watercolour
Hi Colin, I Start with a light green wash and dry it. Then a darker wash adding in any variations in color before it dries too much. Then once dry use the dry brush technique(using the side of the brush) for tufts of grass and grass in shadows. Practice doing this on a spare piece of art paper first. The 300 lb Arches is best. You can try on 140 lb but bear in mind that weight dries much faster. I hope this helps. Experiment and practice and you’ll get it I’m sure. I'll try and incorporate this in a future video too.
Mange tak! Excellent to hear! Glad you enjoyed it. There is also a Winter and Autumn version of this Tutorial on my channel if you fancy giving those a go 👍
This made things so much simpler, thank you. Havnt done any water colour painting in 20 years so I forgot alot. This is a great help getting back into it.
Excellent! Well done and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. There are also Winter and Autumn versions of this scene on my channel if you would like to try them 👍
I had so much fun following along with your video! I have only been painting for 2 weeks so I don't know what I'm doing yet haha. But I'm happy with the results and I enjoyed myself.
This is genius, thank you so much! I've never seen this cloud technique of painting *around* the wet spaces before, and I can't wait to try it for myself. Thanks again!
I’m just getting back into watercolour painting after a fifteen year hiatus, starting a small group class tomorrow. I did this painting and was quite pleased with the result which has given my confidence a bit of a boost. Hopefully between the classes and your videos I’ll get to where I want to be. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for a practical, valuable starter. I'm much older, and trying to overcome a challenge - red/green difficulty. Attempting watercolor for the first time, I'm noticing/perceiving more colors than ever. My color vision may not be perfect but, I'm not going to let that hinder me. Maybe giving others some amusement along the way. It's all Art.
I am not a beginner. However, I always find it very very helpful to return to the basics, especially when I am on a "creative slump". Thank you ever so much for this tutorial. Have just subscribed to your channel.
This was really interesting and fun to watch. Thank you for creating this tutorial, it was very helpful, and had lots of different techniques in it. I especially liked the way you created the trees, you made it look so easy! You have a very soothing voice as well as a relaxed teaching style. I subscribed today after watching this video. Have a great week!
Thank you so much for making this video. I have no knowledge about painting. I think it would help if you camera also include how you mixed the paints, wet or dry your brush in between… thank you. 😅
Thanks Marcio, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I mainly use Pro Art brushes. They are a little more expensive but the quality is unmatched in my opinion. A cheaper version and one I also use are Sable brushes which are linked in the description 👍
hello Bill, I draw my first landscape after watch this video😂! I never thought that I can do it that easy🎉 yeah! thankyou so much for your sharing😊. you are my teacher from now on. thanks again Bill❤
Awesome! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the other beginners videos on my channel. Let me know if you have any questions. Always happy to help
Hello! What are the perfect type of paper for watercolor paintings? 😅 I have noticed that whenever I try wet on wet my paper quickly absorbs the water and builds up the tiny paper idk. I am a beginner 😢😢
Hi there, Arches is the one I use but Fabriano is also good. You need it to thick so you don’t run into the issues you are facing. 300lb rough is a good place to start. There’s a link in the description 👍
You will get there Alisha, practice is the key 🙌 Let us know if there is anything in particular you are stuck on and remember to practice elements on small bits of paper before tackling a scene 👍
I must have a different understanding of beginner. I'm not a painter getting into watercolor, I've never painted at all. "Neaten up the edges" with water or color really doesnt help me know what I'm doing. I end up with over-watered color and somehow also too much pigment
My advice would be to use a spare piece of paper to test how much pigment is on your brush until you learn how to judge it by eye. You can also use a tissue to lift pigment off the paper or off your brush. I hope that helps and please reach out if you need any further help 👍 @jenjaynes8863
I suggest using a spare piece of paper to test out how much pigment you have on your brush or use a tissue to lift excess pigment off the paper before it drys. You can also use the tissue to dab your brush on if you think you might have too much pigment. The use of added water on the cloud edges helps lighten the edges and give a more “fused” look. I hope this helps but please reach out if you have any other questions. Practice makes perfect! 👍

You're welcome 👍
Great work explained in simplicity.
Paper 300 GSM or 300 pounds?
Thank you, 140lbs is fine for beginners but 300lbs is more durable and can hold more washes 👍
Nice! But which side is the light coming from?
In your interpretation it can come from any side you decided but on this one it’s from the left 👍
Cant thank you enough
You are most welcome 👍
thank u i have a art exam tomorrow and i have to draw nature scenery
Good luck for tomorrow and hope this video helped 👍
I guess I’m not at the beginner according to this video. Is there a level before beginner?
You will get there Alisha, practice is the key 🙌 Let us know if there is anything in particular you are stuck on and remember to practice elements on small bits of paper before tackling a scene 👍
I only have a normal sized brush that's so small :(
There's a link to some brushes I recommend in the description and they are not expensive :)
