@@ChrissieNicely Wow, the funny thing about this is that in some of these new supergarnulating colours, they use almost the same pigments. Note that Galaxy Violet is just the same as Tundra Pink (PB29 + PR233). It only varies the amount of pigments in each color mix. I think it's better (and cheaper) to create your own mixes ;)

Thank you for linking to my video :) I think the problem with their advertising was choice of words. "Super granulating" to them meant granulating mixtures that result in more than one color being shown in the granulation. Schmincke didn't mean they were more dramatically granulating colors than normal, but rather that they were special because you will see two colors when they separate in a wet wash. Most of us wanted to believe they would have more texture or be something we couldn't mix on our own. A few of them prompt people to try fun new color combinations. I particularly love Schmincke's Mahogany Brown PBr33, such a beautiful and rare brown pigment :)

The term "super granulating" wasn't used by Schmincke, but by Jacksons while promoting the colours. Schmincke itself calls them "Special Edition Granulating Colours" which is actually more acurate to what they are. Mixes of granulating colours :) I wish though they were a bit more special and Teohs and yours @kimberly mixes look so much nicer than the premixed colours.

@@LanaGoesArt Schmincke used the wording super granulating on their website when these were first released as well as promotional materials and descriptions given to Jackson's Art. On Schmincke's site they like to talk about what "super" means to them in regards to granulating. Here's what Schmincke has to say about multi pigment mixtures "Effect amplification: How do you mix supergranulating colours? To enhance the granulating effect and achieve unusual colour shifts, simply mix two (or more) granulating colours." I think so many of us were disappointed that it didn't mean extra texture, but rather just multi-color. We are definitely able to do the best mixtures on our own with the single pigments. Too many of these colors were similar!

Thanks Teoh. Your experiment dampened my feeling of wanting all these "super granulating" paints. I'm sure that the effect would be enhanced even more if I painted with water that had a good amount of salt suspended in it. That will make any pigment granulate.

Thank you very much Teoh! This has shown me some really pretty mixes I can use in my paintings 😊 I did not intend to buy these mixes as I have been a bit disappointed in other mixes and I like being able to move the colour one way or the other. I agree, mixing on the page looks better and you can always blend them more if you like

When I saw them I picked up two tubes at the art shop. When I noticed they were made of pigments that I already had, I requested an info sheet from Schmincke but they asked me not to publish it since they were still not sure how their marketing and production would pan out.
However, in their campaign they are not making a secret of the fact that the paints are made up of several granulating pigments. Naturally, I still wanted to have all the colours but getting the 15 ml tubes only makes sense if you really use a lot of those particular colours. In view of spending money I don't really have, I refrained.
Thanks for the video and mentioning the other channels. I will be watching Kimberly Crick's video which I had missed and checking out your friend's Insta. 😊🥰😍😘

Awesome, I agree, that the colours are easily mixable from a limited amount of pigments, that most most likely have already. Your mixes also look so much nicer than the premixed versions.
By now Schmincke came up with new ones, which are Jacksons exclusive (Forest and Tundra sets), which are mostly green. I don't know if I will get the new ones, but we'll see.
The term "super granulating" was also by Jacksons, Schmincke itself calls it the "granulating colours" and I agree, it's just the usual granulation you get from mixing granulating pigments.
Thanks for the great video and the mixes. :) Have a great day!

So excited you're doing this. I may end up having to buy them...OR buy the singles and mix myself!! I've never invested much time in learning the separate pigments, but this really helps. Do you have a downloadable list of pigments? So you've convinced me that the individual colors are better, just mix a chart like yours for reference!! Thanks for this! I saw these for sale and quickly realized I already had most of the pigments. I give props to Schmincke for introducing unique mixes, but they weren't must haves for me. Quick question: have you tested how Schmincke's Viridian dries in a pan?

    • @ChrissieNicely
      @ChrissieNicely 3 роки тому +5

I have Schmincke Horadam Viridian in a pan. It rewets really well. Because both tubes and pans contain exactly the same paints, it will not matter if you buy a pan or fill it from a tube. I also have Viridian from Sennelier and can say that the Schmincke version contains a little more binder and is a teeny tiny bit warmer or darker in my view. Since Sennelier contains honey the former would make absolute sense. I hope this helps. 😊

I also had the same idea and purchased some weeks ago some of the pigments I didn't have to mix my own granulating colors. Quite nice and more versatile! Thanks Teoh!

i dont think mixing on paper is that importance when using these series of paint since all of them are granulating paint, their color is going to separate on paper giving you a similar effect as mixing on paper.

I watched a few other videos by different people and they almost all had the same thoughts - nice idea, convenient mixes, but too many repeat pigments and easily mixable. I just ordered myself a 15ml tube of both Mars Black and Mahogany Brown to try out mixing some of my own with the other colours I have. It'll give me an excuse to open up my Potter's Pink and test that out too :)

  • @davejohnson5365

makes perfect sense to buy the individual colours as you can use them separately, and also create the mix, and then also create any other mixes you wish. plus when creating the 'super granulator' mix you can vary the strength of either colour - which you can't do with the schmincke ready mix. and it is much more fun creating the mixes yourself, there may be a discovery of an even more interesting blend. finally it is valuable experience learning to mix new colours. and finally-finally - it is more economical. )))
the 4 additional colours needed to mix the ten new tundra and forest super granulators are:
    b36 - cobalt cerulean
br7y43 - raw umber (schmincke don't have y43 as a single pigment paint)
    g19 - cobalt green 'pure'
br7 - this will be either maroon brown or green umber
plus these from the original 12 teoh listed:
    g26 again
    g18 again
    br33 again
    bk11 again
    g50 again
    b29 again 3 times
    r233 again
    br6 again
looks like schmincke are working their way through mixing all their granulators with each other.!

I agree, paint from more than one pigment are fine for convenience, but I generally prefer single pigment paints.
A whole set of multipigment hues to get a more granulating effect sounds like an expensive gimmick to me.
I had expected these to be "super granulating" because of a bigger particle size, now thát might have been interesting for people who like a lot of granulation.
Personally I think "normal" granulation is good enough for me😉

I very much appreciate your video. It's absolutely appropriate for artist with an extensive collection of paints. I am a homeless whistle-blower federal investigator blasting Epsteins partners-in-crime in both major US political parties, Prince Andrew, Natahanyu etc. I have very little money. It would cost me 3 times as much money to buy all the individual tubes at $15 each than just buy one of the Schminke super-granulating paints for $ 10 or $12 individually or even less in the sets of 5ml tubes. I had already though of mixing my own but the regular paints costs as much as their special mixes. I am going to be getting the small set of their 3 Kohle liquid charcoal to mix with good budget watercolor paints. Probably Paul Reubens artist grade. I love muted colors as a wildlife artist & portraitist. My art instructors made us learn color mixing. We had a small 12 color Cotman set of tubes so we could also learn opacity VS transparency. I'm from a tiny Missouri Klan-run town with no cable, internet or art supplies. 😂😂 I had to travel.an hour away with my artist aunt to the art supplies store in Columbia for my supplies of paints & good cold press paper in 1984.
I'm looking forward to re-watching this video once I have a collection of paints.
