      Yes, yes, yes experiment with granulation! It’s a watercolor thing and not prominent in other media. Understanding Granulating colors can be so important when working with this medium! So glad you’re enjoying the videos 😄

    This was very helpful! I bought a set of colours and did not realise they were all staining and I missed my granulation! It was very useful to learn about the mediums and paper choices that can help me get some of the random, easy beauty I am looking for when I paint rocks, rivers, and other landscape areas.

      @LeilaAtaya  Рік тому +7

      I’m so glad you found it helpful ❤️ and another tip 😉 you can always get one or two highly granulating colours separately and it will make it easier to adjust to your new set without having to spend more on a full set of new paints.

    This tutorial was so well done, with great explanation, demonstration and enthusiasm! Very helpful! I'm a new painter and have been working with watercolor for about 3 months. I am loving it! - So much to learn; and it'll be a while before I develop my own style. Yet there is something so forgiving about watercolor. There is definitely a magic that happens once the paint dries and one returns to look at her work. -- Even a novice can feel they've painted something beautiful! Thanks for sharing your expertise on this very relevant topic.

    I’m completely amazed at how You broke this down into such clear, detailed explanations for your viewers. I’m just beginning in this medium and knew that I loved the effects of granulating paint but I didn’t know anything else beyond that. I questioned what would happen if I mixed my less expensive paints with DS and other more expensive paints. Now I know what to try and what to look for. Thanks so much for the respect you show your viewers by taking time to give a thorough lesson on how paints behave differently and with different paper. The profile sketches of the paper surfaces with the staining vs granulating paints is especially valuable to me.

    • @LeilaAtaya

      I’m so glad you’ve made a good use of the video. Paper is very important in watercolor , some may argue - even more important than paint. The best thing you can do is experiment with your paint and paper that you usually use as you will get different results. Different brands of paper manufacture it a bit differently so cold press of one company may be different from another brand… experiment, experiment, experiment 😊

    This was extremely well presented. I'm experimenting by using some universal colorants with Gum Arabic to create my own water colors. So far the do granulate more than standard water colors. Another thing I've done is create watercolor with india ink with a few drops of Darth Black (a super ultra black acrylic) with my gum Arabic medium. This watercolor granulates beautifully. I've also experimented with mixing non granulating tints with granulating pigments normally used for house paint, in my attempt to formulate supergranulators. I'd classify my blacks as supergranulating.

    Hey Flower : - Cheers for yet another interesting + chilled out upload.......
    *There's a W missing off your sleeve by the way!!*
    A lovely-looking fishy picture, I reckon watching Koi carp float around in a pond is nearly as relaxing as listening to you talk....??!. My Dad's cousin in the Isle Of Man has a big pond with them in, I remember nearly falling asleep sat at the side watching them - while we were over there watching the TT races (not so relaxing....!!!).
    That shade of blue you used at around 21:00 - Fallow Blue?, slightly hard to hear the name of it you quoted, thanks to that damn gorgeous accent of yours (!) ...... = Exactly the colour of my TRX850. And **Indeed** : - that mix of deep blue and amber/orange in a painting works just perfectly.
    Bye Chuck - all the best down there, Nick.

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  2 роки тому

      Hi :) I agree it's relaxing watching them swim around in the pond. There was a big beautiful pond like that in the Auckland Zoo but it was removed after the renovations unfortunately. The colour is phthalo blue. It's a very beautiful staining colour on it's own and it's commonly used to produce other blue colours as well. :D

      It is what you want it to be :) It can be light, shapeless, ink like or rich, very descriptive, detailed, textured. You can use watercolour on its own or together with ink, w/c pencils, gouache. I have some videos with those tutorials on YT as well. Just keep going with it and don't feel that you need to be restricted by a specific style or type of painting. As long as you are practicing, experimenting and developing you are on the right track 😊

      9:59a.m. Excellent demonstrations! I had no idea that the more water you add to a granulating pigment, the more granulated it becomes. Also, I, too, did not know that there was a granulating medium and spray. I will be getting some, for sure. I have a question. If I don’t want my sky color to be granulated, can you suggest a cerulean that doesn’t granulate? I generally use Daniel Smith paints. Thank you.

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  Рік тому +1

      @@lynneboll4259 absolutely , you can use non granulating colour and get a smooth appearance. Phthalo blue doesn’t granulate in almost all brands and you can make interesting mixes for the sky with that. You can look up the brands descriptions. They usually specify which colours granulate and what don’t. By the way Daniel Smith have many granulating colours so you might like to try another brand if the colour you like in DS granulated.

    I love how detailed you explain things, not just the look of things but the how and why of it all, even the when. Stayed up till after 2 a.m. watching this while making some very experimental new watercolor paint colors, keeping granulation and those sort of 2-tone or even 3-tone effect in mind. Darkened my own mix of dusk pink and making this gorgeous granulating brownish black with orange undertone. Bloodstone Genuine from Daniel Smith is a close match but I’ve enhanced the orange undertone. Was so in love with it that I immediately commandeered a new watercolor sketch book to keep those colors that were a succes to either remake (expensive) paints, or make it from my owned supplies, to not have to invest in a full tube, etc. But the finding out new colors is my favorite part. So much so that my artwork isn’t growing much 😂
    I was planning to use a cheap watercolor sketchbook or a selfmade one (been working on making a few more for that exact reason) but it ended up being a proper hardbound watercolor sketchbook. Then I thought that it is even better to have it in this hardbound one because a sketchbook is all about experiments and studies and learning about (new) colors and at least this way it’s handy to put away or to keep open

      Colour mixing and experimenting is a very important part of painting. Many students want to jump into painting finished art works but what you are doing is so good!! Make sure to keep them all and don't forget to write down the colours in the mixes and pigment numbers. I have some videos on creating multiplication table with paint and colour theory but that's on Patreon. There is also a video on how I've made a sketch book on UA-cam ua-cam.com/video/nURDuhlrBEY/v-deo.html 😉

    Started to get into granulation some years ago and found the video very informative, Mars and Luna Black have some amazing results mixed with granulation medium then applied over a watered wash, but as suggested the opposite using flat paper tilting the board slightly, try also watercolour paper board which keeps flat whereas paper stretched will become uneven spoiling the end result.

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely, it's important to use the correct heaviness of paper depending on the size of the work. The larger the painting and the more water you intend to use the thicker the paper should be otherwise you will struggle with buckling and other problems :) using cotton also helps!

    • @whachoutb4
      @whachoutb4 Рік тому +1

      @LeilaAtaya I mix the colour neat into half of a bottle of granulation medium, you can judge it then from there, it will settle quickly so you need to give it a shake, you will have enough to back up along with being able to reuse either applying with a brush or pipette.
      It's amazing to watch the pigment floating and then settle, very unpredictable, but that's the beauty.

      I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean by enter a show. Staining and granulating are opposite in a way but they are all still watercolour. Yes transitioning from pastel you need to really experiment with the watercolour and play with it, create lots of mixes and swatches try different techniques. Have fun!!😊

      It's hard to say without being familiar with the brand of paint and pigments used but you can always experiment. I find that you get the most drastic changes with granulation medium when used with the paint that granulates a little bit on it's own. If the paint is really smooth it's not as obvious. I’m working on a larger koi painting now so this is very timely 👍🏼❤️. How well would it work to put a granulated layer over a base layer that is not granulated and was completely dry? 🤔

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  5 місяців тому

      Granulation medium only works with paint that is suspended in the water so it will not have an affect on dry paint. What you can do is layer darker paint with granulation over dry lighter layers. Don't know if it will work for your specific situation though it really depends on the effect you want to achieve. 😊

    I've been dreaming of granulated paints, but they are hard to get where I live, shipping fees to Switzerland are ridiculously priced. Schmincke is right on the corner of this country and amazon don't deliver them here, it's, if they have it available. I bought the DS granulating medium after watching this video, to be honest, I didn't like it, that's not the look I want to achieve. Which brand of paint did use for the abstract showed at 11:40 at the video? That's a beautiful granulation, as much are your arquitetural paintings. I learned a lot with your explanations. Thank you for sharing. 💞

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  16 днів тому +1

      Most of those colours (in the time stamp) are schmincke with lots of granulating medium. I've never used DS medium the one I used was winsor and newton and schmincke spray. You can go for colours that you'd normally have in the set that tend to granulate like carbon black, ultra marine, some browns etc. I can understand your frustration, I'm in NZ and it's hard to get some brands over here as well and shipment cost at times even more than the actual product. Try all the colours that you have with the granulation medium and see which ones granulate more 😊

    Good video! Very helpful. My only complaint is using granulating medium for everything. It's an extra expense, and if the paints granulate to begin with, why buy extra medium? It also would've been nice to know how to use the paints on their own without the extras.

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  Рік тому

      I discuss different points with and without the granulation medium in the video. Also make sure to experiment with your paint as different brands create different granulation effects and if your paint creates enough granulation for your painting you don't need to use anything extra and stick to the other points I'm showing in the video :)

    • @LeilaAtaya

      Make sure you have a chart for the brand you are using and when choosing your colours refer to the chart for this info. Most reputable brands specify in the description if it's granulating or non-granulating pigments. If you already have paint that granulates you can minimise granulation effects by following the tips I give in the video but to make highly granulating paint completely granulation free is not possible.
