Ableton created that application for Ableton desktop users to be able to sketch up ideas and then use a new Ableton cloud system to export their sketches to Ableton’s desktop application. So Basically it’s a notepad for Ableton projects.
Stem exporting seems to be most people’s work flow, including Ableton live users but not for sketching ideas.
You can still export your sketches from Ableton’s Note app as audio and if you use muting, you can export single tracks as stems and then import them in your preferred app.

I agree, and the pricing of the app shows that Ableton want you maybe upgrade or just buy a Live version because of this addition to their workflow. Any widening of export facilities would mean a real hike in price to maybe Cubasis prices.

    • @oneawarer
      @oneawarer Рік тому +1

@@jonathanbennett4535 Ableton Note application doesn’t come close to a fully functional Digital Audio Workstation, Ableton will have to make massive amounts of upgrading for it to come close to Cubasis or GarageBand type functionality.
Exporting stems would not be a significant enough addition to hike the price of Ableton’s Note application as it already has an export audio feature.

I think note is brilliant for what it is. An app to start projects on the go, and then flesh them out when you return to your computer. It’s not meant to be anything more than that, and frankly I wouldn’t want it to be much more than that. Once you start adding everything under the sun to a music iPhone app, it becomes bloated and unusable. Note is smart, sleek, simple, and perfect to get something creative going that can be completed once integrated back into the full Ableton program when you get home.

@jacob haq I can understand your reasoning for not wanting to review Note. There has been some improvements to the app, and I suspect it will continue to get better. I have been asking Ableton for years for a port to iOS, and they delivered this app. It’s good for what it does, but I agree that even a limited desktop version would be better.

  •  Рік тому +10

I'm not interested in Note simply because I'm not a Live user, but if I was I'd be all over it. I guess that's Ableton's target group - Live users who'd like to sketch ideas on their mobile devices and continue developing them on their desktop computers.

Personally, I want Logic on my iPad and Mac (and even iPhone), and plug-ins from any Apple OS to run on all Apple devices. They use the same chips now, so I hope the universal compatibility dream happens! As for pricing, I would like to see Mac plugins come with an iPadOS license included for the higher price, but iPadOS-only for a traditional, lower cost.

iOS users (and gear heads in general) are constantly speculating about what could be, rather than celebrating what is.
For Live users, it truly is a gift and will continue to get better with time.
All these people whining about Logic on iPad. Have they used Logic? There’s a gang of menus, and the sound libraries take up a bunch of storage . Even if it did come to iPad, I would not be purchasing, nor would I have the space.
Live has come along way since Version 1. Many of the daws on iOS are only on their second, third, perhaps 4th version, people need to be patient. Pro features will come with time and profits.
Drambo 2.0 is so far very exciting, same with the potential in Loopy Pro and Audulus 4! Pppl need to relax and have fun with the instruments effects and sequencers on patch storage! There’s so much to be grateful for on iOS!

Re: Ableton: Completely agree on Ableton Note. It's why I'm not doing a review video for it either yet.
Re: Pricing: I and many people I know are more than willing to pay desktop prices for desktop class apps, it just seems there's only a few very loud people who won't.
Re: UI: Cubasis has done a fantastic job at translating the Cubase desktop UI to iPad and I think others can follow suit. Cubasis is only missing a few features and yet it is universal and works across all devices and screen sizes.
Re: Just go desktop: There are many like myself who refuse to go desktop because many of our auv3 apps are not available on desktop and there can be configuration nightmares on desktop compared to the simplicity of iOS.
My conclusion: I think this is just where we are in the evolution of mobile music production. It's very early days. The market has to mature more and this will take years of time. I'm now not expecting a desktop class DAW on iOS until the end of the decade at the earliest.

I think they wouldn’t have called it Note if their intent was a full blown DAW, it’s a note taking concept, something to quickly put together melodies and “an idea” you maybe used to write down in a notebook, being able to move that into Ableton is great for “taking the next step”.
Totally onboard on your comments around iOS being powerful enough, but it’s also an ecosystem thing, Apple doesn’t just sell iPads and there is an entire community of dongle collectors that will be most sad if they don’t have a USB port to plug it into lol.

All I’m saying is AUM and Loopy pro are both SO close to being everything I’d need. When loopy gets midi doughnuts or if AUM shifted ever so slightly so audio playing and midi sequencer launching wasn’t such a hot mess at trying to get to work hand in hand (I mean if AUM’s audio player had a sister midi player…..holy shit) and sync’d together then the likes of ableton would be superfluous. The thing with AUM is I love it’s modular feel but I don’t know of an audio player (koala doesn’t handle the size of audio files i use at all, im talking full stem sized) that can be midi triggered in AUM.
Case and point when loopy pro came out i thought holy cow this is it. Combined with LK as the control surface here’s everything I need. Til I tried using loopy pro as an AUV3 In AUM triggered by LK. Loaded all my stems in, set them to be triggered by LK, added a couple of synths, put some midi notes on them and launched.
Sounded great, went to save and loopy crashed, tried it again, loopy crashed again and it’s a bug that’s never been ironed out to my knowledge. It’s a shame because otherwise it would be pretty much everything I need right there for live performances and also be a way I could rube together all the elements I need with a couple of glaring omissions.
I genuinely think the only thing I’m desperate for is an audio player that functions like a singular audio clip in ableton. So I’m talking full stretch/warp/elastic audio function with a similar ease of use to an ableton clip and was triggerable by an assignable midi note. If such a thing already exists, here, take my god damn money now. Because I’d never leave AUM and LK again!

I have different workflows depending on the situation. Sometimes I like to use hardware synths with the beatstep pro or the mmt-8 and record everything to my 4 track or start in Ableton and use whatever tool I think will serve the song best.
I like to use koala, gadget, zenbeats or open AUM and sequence auv3 instruments with a hardware sequencer.
I really don't need my ipad to become a desktop computer, I already have a computer.
    Thanks for the video!

Two things are needed for pro music production on the iPad.
    1. A real Daw. Cubasis is ‘ok’, but doesn’t support automatic latency compensation. It would be nice to have better routing for busses and effect sends. AUM with a timeline would be amazing!
    2. Pro acoustic drum apps. Something like SSD5 for example would be wonderful. There are many others that would be just as awesome.

I found Note pretty cool actually. Yes there are a few missing or weak features such as midi support and sequencer editing but its purpose is using it on the go where you don’t have your laptop or a space to use your laptop. Purpose of laptop is Ableton Live desktop of course. It’s clearly just an extension to ableton to sketch ideas on the go. Also If you are not ableton live user it’s cool to have a taste of Ableton workflow then considering to switch to ableton live. It seemed to me a pretty good idea, as a tool for ableton users or as a marketing tool to lure new users to Live. Integrated solutions like Note and Push are always welcome. Of course I hope they improve it.

That’s what I loved about the Novation Circuit, the immediacy and ease of use.
My man gripe with it is no ability to impute notes (you have to play them in perfectly and use the capture feature, and move them around with the nudge feature).
So I use i just for that purpose, to have fun and play around, and once I find a melody I like I have to recreate it elsewhere.
For someone who loved the Circuit, this is a great substitute for it. But no, not for serious music making.

To be fair, words do change over time. And the word “App” is short for “Application” as in “Software Application”, so I think it works to say App nowadays. 😅 Either way, I had to teach myself to say “App” when I started using iOS. Before that I always said Computer software. Lines get blurred over time. Today our phones and tablets are also computers. Another generation or two, most people will probably just call everything software related “Apps”. I’ve already seen that tendency from the younger generation. We cant stop language evolution.

Yeah iOS is itself a software program- or more properly, a collection of closely integrated software programs. User applications are software wherever they turn up. The term “desktop app” is quite common in US English- or at least out here on the West Coast where our orbit around Silicon Valley is much smaller. :) Their i- and android counterparts are “mobile apps”.
This year anyway. Not even the French Royal Academy can keep language neat and tidy. Street lingo will win every time.

I was going to make an intelligent contribution to the conversation, but then I saw the dancing cow! ... But, in all seriousness, it is a complex subject. I'm not an Ableton user (currently), so Note on iOS doesn't interest me at all in its current form - mostly for the workflow reasons Jakob raises. (I spent no longer than 20 seconds dismissing it when I first saw it advertised.) As for "desktop class apps on iOS", a lot of people seem to want Logic Pro on iOS, but I honestly just don't see this as a viable option - mostly for reasons of pricing. Instead, Apple could do a decent, competitive upgrade to GarageBand and hit most of the iOS market without undercutting Logic Pro sales. Personally, I'm happy using iOS for the core of my workflow, while including Mac/desktop instruments in my compositions and DAWs for mastering. I just like getting the best of both worlds instead of trying to do everything on a mobile device.

Desktops are more suitable for DAW like stuff, but I don‘t want to use a soft synth there with a mouse 😱. Mobile devices/apps encourage you to think more in a non linear way / daw-less. The criteria that Note should support the export of stems is a good criteria or differentiation for the two „worlds“. At the end (and that‘s why Steve Jobs never wanted to merge iPads and Macs), both platforms have their meaning.

    Great Video.
we need to define “desktop class”. If we define Desktop Class as hardware/software equally or more useful & powerful as what exists in the MacOS/Windows/Linux space, then we already have many “desktop class” music production tools in the iOS Music Production environment. I’d argue iOS is much better at some things, especially musical input for non-instrumentalists & non-theorists.
GarageBand iOS in its **usefulness** is already desktop class. Though GB iOS could benefit from 5 more user configurable effects slots, a mixer view, group tracks, a mixer view, & a master bus/channel; it exists between GarageBand MacOS & Logic Pro X with regard to design & usefulness. GB iOS is also more intuitive than both aforementioned MacOS programs.
Cubasis [which i don’t enjoy] addresses a lot of this but sometimes in a way that… comes with some tradeoffs for my personal workflow. GB iOS is very musical, Cubasis is very technical.
But Cubasis, in its usefulness & power, is desktop class, especially on new mobile devices.
We have Apps, Effects, & Instruments that are useful, gorgeous, & affordable from developers like Demo Music, Klevgrand, Fred Anton Corvest, ToneBoosters, E-Instruments, Baby Audio, Caelum Audio, Kymatica, just to name a few, even keeping iPhone in mind for the essentials or across their lineup of offerings. Among other developers who’s apps i don’t personally use as much like 4Pockets, Audio Damage, Moog, Korg, & countless others, who make incredibly useful effects & beautiful software instruments that compete with or are ports of MacOS/Windows software, optimized for touch and to fit in our pockets.
I still want more Klevgrand AUv3’s for iPhone, but they need to be properly incentivized.
For those who primarily use presets, the more apps the better. For true sound designers, there’s already so many useful, powerful & beautiful tools available to the platform.
The DAW’s could still better balance fashion, form, & function, i’ve alluded to this earlier, but we take for granted just how useful the tools we already have are, that we are already refusing to pay much for, while asking for more.
i want as many sounds & effects as possible, so i want to see Komplete come to iPhone & will pay $$$ for it when it happens if need be. [We’re getting closer to this as E-Instruments tests the waters with Pure Piano & Pure Upright-they make NI libraries for Kontakt/Komplete.] Real-time Auto-Tune style pitch correction does not fulfill my needs. I need Offline Tuning, so I’m clamoring for Melodyne & will pay the cost.
I use iPhone as a Professional Music Production Tool.
What Desktop Class is not, as Jakob put it eloquently, is taking MacOS/Windows software & smooshing into a tinier chassis with no optimization & no consideration of the benefits of smaller touch based form factors.
Regarding Ableton Note, we have to properly contextualize what it is & what it is not. It is not a replacement for any current iOS App, it is not Ableton Live for iOS, it is not an iOS focused tool meant to operate in the context of that environment. Ableton Note is first & foremost a boon for Ableton Live users. & It is a Bridge, bringing much needed attention to the iOS platform from a community of creatives who very well may never have considered iOS devices as useful within or beyond their workflow-& in a fairly elegant way.
[I was similarly elated when Apple contracted some Sound Libraries from Mark Lettieri, Oak Felder, Soulection, Take A Daytrip, Tom Misch, and TRAKGIRL.]
I agree, Ableton Note needs midi & stem export to be properly useful to iOS Music Producers. Which is universal & simple enough it will likely happen soon. However another commenter recently mentioned not including specific Apple Frameworks as to not alienate Windows Ableton users who wouldn’t be able to process AUv3 protocols & so on-I can personally accept this paradigm. So we’ll see what happens. Consider spending the six dollars & leaving feedback within the App if this truly matters to You & you want to incentivize Ableton to do more. As i intend to do.
the rest is copied & pasted from what i’ve written on other threads.
[in response to someone who expected Ableton Note to be free & not Six Dollars i wrote:]
with all due respect, we’ve got to stop expecting developers to put in months/years of labor, creating tools for this ecosystem, for free.
the [Universal] iOS platform is worth investing in. & we have to participate in that as consumers, as we’d want developers-especially major players-to participate in that.
[In response to Mobile Music Pro commenting on Jakob’s survey, i wrote:]
Period. It’s honestly infuriating to read comments about $5-$50 being “too much for an app”, when music making has never been this accessible to so this many people before & a lot of great tools [i.e. GarageBand iOS] are already free or less than $15.
Especially from hobbyists who otherwise invest thousands in the MacOS/Windows space & on hardware synths, & OP-1/Field’s.
iOS devices are not toys. iOS Music Production tools are not toys. They Are Tools. we have [multimedia] studios in our pockets. the nerve to perpetuate the pretense of mobile music production not being serious or legitimate, while also refusing to invest in the ecosystem based on that pretense, to then use that lack of investment as the reason why they’ll never take it seriously-is a kind of circular logic that makes me seethe.
i want Komplete as a universal AUv3. I want Melodyne as a universal AUv3. i will spend $$$ on it. I’ve purchased so many apps for mySelf & others since 2019.
I’ve made hundreds of dollars from music made with my iPhone. [& that number WILL grow] “Professionals” use iOS devices. They Do.
& the youth/new musicians have NEVER been able to learn music production this fluidly before. that’s important.
whether iPhone/iOS Music Production is your starting place or landing place, it deserves to become lush & robust. It deserves to be taken seriously.
the amount of debt that students & young people/new musicians go into for tools that are often un-intuitive to anyone without a formal music background & dedicated space for music making-spending hundreds on daws & plug ins after paying thousands for a MacOS device [or otherwise], midi keyboards, microphones, audio interfaces, et cetera in the name of legitimacy, when they already own iPhones & or iPads they could learn & create incredible work with-it boils my blood. [not to mention how many free resources exist for learning music theory & music production, without falling for the undergrad scam.]
Any method that results in beautiful music is legitimate. Expired paradigms are holding us back. Not seeing iPhone & iPad for the incredible tools they are, is holding us back. Seeing iOS Music Production as non serious when what we have in our pockets now is equivalent to what $$,$$$+ was spent on twenty or even ten years ago, is holding us back. I want more for us.
    &
additionally, there is arguably as much computing power in an iPhone 13 mini as there was in the desktops producers like Timbaland, Max Martin & Shellback, et cetera were using in the 90s/early 2000’s, if not MORE [analog heavy lifting not withstanding.]
No one seems to understand or value the miniaturization & distribution of creative technologies. No one seems to understand how special it is, that what used to exist as a room full of gear & cost $$,$$$-$$$,$$$, now fits in the palm of one’s hand & costs up to $,$$$.
We are at a turning point in history.

Jakob, don't expect anything else from this app. It's a simple Ableton music app and nothing else. I think ableton didn't even need to release this Note. It doesn't add anything to what already exists for IOS and it even seems that Ableton has only just discovered that there is a machine called Ipad and has launched an app completely delayed in time.

Jakob Haq - wish you had this attitude regarding Beatsurfing 2. Beatsurfing 2 does not support IAA or AUV3. But okay, they do have midi support. While Beatsurfing 2 has some great features, the most critical loss is not having the IAA and AUV3 support on an app asking for $30!!!! At least Abelton only asked for $6. Still, you being a top reviewer not reviewing Abelton Note because it is basically NOT finished is a great move. Hopefully Abelton will wake up and get with the mobile music making program.
Honestly it would be nice if you use this type of criteria as a measurement for what you review or not review on ALL apps that would benefit the community greatly. Beatsurfing 2 has had many updates and still they have not focused on the one or two things every iOS music developer…even the most basic noob developer does in mobile music; IAA and or AUV3 support.

Beatsurfing 2 is to me what Borderlands Granular and Sampler are. Full screen instruments. I’ve never needed AUv3 support for those apps either.
Personally I want to use those apps in full screen mode without other things coming in between. Whenever I talk about this, people either ignore or miss why I like those apps.
When it comes to Beatsurfing 2, I haven’t needed AUv3. I even feel that it might be unintuitive to be design of the app. It’s not a sequencer, it’s a live performance instrument and it’s been perfectly designed for that. I’ve never had such fluid playing like ever before.
Oh and AUv3 support is on the roadmap for Beatsurfing 2 btw.
I have different criteria for different types of apps and I try to explain that. I’ll try to make it clearer in the future.

@@JakobHaq on most of your points I would agree. AUV3 being unintuitive to the design? Ehhhhh. Pretty hard to see how a “nuts n’ Bolts” feature working in the background interrupts the flow and design of an app. But oh well. Glad to see that AUV3 is “on the roadmap”. When It get’s to my stop, that’s when they get my money ;)
Borderlands and Samplr both have IAA capability. Whether it is IAA or AUV3, doesn’t really matter to me. I just wanted a way to bring Beatsurfing 2 into Loopy Pro. I was surprised / shocked that neither option was available in Beatsurfing 2. The intended set up would been to have Loopy pro be controlled by launchpad mini MK3 and the touch screen would be for the surfing.

I think support for midi keyboard comptroller’s and a piano roll/editor would make it complete for me. All the things that people say are missing connectivity wise is fine with me, I have a ton of other apps on my IPad that I use when I’m working on IPad only productions. Why do I think Ableton Note is great? Because I have Ableton 11 Suite and a Push 2. If not for that I would never use Note, I wouldn’t have bought it. As much as I like Note I would never recommend it to anyone looking to do all their work on the IPad. The main purpose for Note is to sketch ideas on the IPad , send it to Live and then being able to develop the idea and have the same instruments inside of Live and tweak them.
If someone is looking to do clip based production on the IPad and export stems there’s Gadget, Groovebox and ZenBeats, all of which I also use. Ableton Note is just not for everybody, simple as that. If you’re looking for a full featured Ableton Daw with all the things we love like auv3 connectivity, a ton of export options and all the bells and whistles, you’re just not going to get that for what Note cost, which is $6 here in the US.
If you bought it and hate it, you haven’t watched enough videos on it or haven’t done your research before buying it. Again, if I didn’t own Ableton Live 11, I wouldn’t have bought Note. I’m loving what it does. I agree that the IPad screen is just to small for most desktop level apps.

Actually the reception has been pretty standard I think. Whenever an app comes out that does not support current trending “iOS music tech”, it gets a bit of flak (right term? 😅). In the early days it was copy/paste, then it was Audiobus, the. MIDI, later on IAA and now AUv3. And if the publisher happens to be a “big fish” then there more backlash. Often it just stems from disappointment I think. A lot of users are just expecting more, specially from a “big fish” like Ableton. Groovebox by Ampify had the same thing happening at first and Reason Mobile too if my memory serves me well. 😅

Live user since v6.....I think that Ableton may have learned some lessons through the yrs about the trials of compatibility and the encumbrance/distraction of entering the integration rat-race. Perhaps they may just be trying to keep this an Ableton thing (using 'the cloud') in order so that they can focus on growing Note exclusively within the Ableton platform environment. Perhaps it is they who are planting the seed to watch HOW it will grow before growing large Branches. Exporting stems is highly reasonable request, but I have an inkling that they want to see how for they can get with the whole Ableton Cloud idea. This may be why they erect this weird playpen of creativity around the Note sketchers for NOW. In Summary, I think rather it is Ableton who are waiting to see how this initial seed drop will grow while keeping it in their own little garden. To me it is a fascinating decision on their part and reminds me of exactly the same mentality they had when designing Push. They want people to be creative inside Ableton and honestly I think I respect that despite my selfish-desires and perhaps (I have not dl Note yet, but soon...but I have Push for 2ver) there is territory I will be -forced- (guided or led) to discover by following the Cloud... It kinda reminds me of Reason tried with Compact. I don't know what happened there because it was a damn good start... anyway, that's another topic. Thanks for the vid Jakob. We'll see!

It’s clear that Apple is trying to create less division between products and I’m glad to see Ableton take this seriously. I wonder if Note will take on some more features that make it worth considering if you don’t use Live. Personally, I had the same initial reactions about the limited nature of Note, but after some use I do think it does a number of things better than other iOS applications. Performance capture and sequence editing are quite sophisticated and much easier to handle than using AUM and Atom. The chromatic grid ported from Push is a good middle ground between Endlesss and Velocity Keyboard. I fully support your decision not to review it and jump on the excitement bandwagon. I hope some discussion of the obvious limitations encourages Ableton to consider his Note or Live could exist on i(Pad)OS as a stand-alone app.
