  • in 1982, facing competition from cheaper imports of the day, Fender repurposed the Squier brand which had originally been a string manufacturer into the budget conscious line of the Fender family. This week Fender introduced some special models to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Squier introduction. In this video, I take a quick look at the 40th anniversary Jazz Basses and Precision Basses and compare them to the Squier Classic Vibe series. These are available in a Vintage Edition and a Gold Edition. The Vintage Edition features a maple fretboard, gold anodized aluminum pick guard, aged hardware, and satin finishes like seafoom green, vintage blond and Dakota red. The Gold Edition features a blocked and bound Indian laurel fretboard, gold anodized aluminum pickguard, and gold bridge, control plate, and tuners (hardware). The legacy of Leo Fender continues. Thanks for watching!

I picked up the Olympic White Jazz model. It's seriously a good bass. I've spent a lot of time with various player series offerings and this one hits at the same level if not better. I would like to see Squier/Fender improve upon the concept and keep a line in this price range like Epiphone/Gibson tends to do. Maybe release a "Pro Series" for Squier. That would be pretty cool.

Thank you very much for your rundown on the Fender 40th Squier anniversary bass & the comparisons between other Squier basses. I have placed an order already however your video was very much appreciated just to give me some interesting additional information about the guitar.

@@hoganshideout Thank you for your reply and the like I appreciate it. And I ordered the Jazz bass in the Ruby Red Metallic. I really think this colour suits the gold hardware & scratch plate, but not only that it’s a beautiful colour.

I recently purchased one of each of the 40th gold series. White Jazz and Blue Precision both with the laurel fretboard. I completely love both of them. No complaints!!!

Bought the p bass; great fit and finish but on the heavy side with ~ 4,5kg / 9,9 pounds; the aged look of the tuners, bridge and knobs is a nice touch - but you have to look twice to recognise it; the quality is really verry good.

I just put in my order for the Ruby red Gold edition Jazz bass at my local Guitar shop. They have one ordered but don't know if it will be here in 1 month or 10 months. I was already looking at the 70's Vintage Jazz but decided to step it up to the 40th anniversary because that Ruby red is just beautiful. It will definitely be enough bass for me as I am not a gigging musician. I just like to groove at home and learn some songs I like. I already own a Squire P bass and a Sterling Musicman Stingray. This will give me the great trifecta of classic basses. Great Video!

Thanks Trevor. Nice choice! The Ruby Red Jazz is probably my favorite one of the series. I was told these would ship in March, but we will see.

Interesting video, thanks! 🙂 For me, the looks of the bass are very important (obviously not more important than the sound but I truly care about the looks) and the gold edition of the 40th anniversary P-Bass in black is sooooo eye-catching. Regarding the price difference compared to the older models, I believe that it definitely comes down to these basses being the "anniversary editions" haha! But at least their looks give some extra value, at least in my opinion. And to me, the sunburst looks pretty odd on that J-Bass (@ 15:08). Greetings from Finland! 👍

Hi Oona, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. I really like the colors and appointments too, and I agree that the price difference is fine. I especially like the ruby red Gold Edition Jazz Bass! Gold and black always look great too!

Obviously this is much later, but I actually just bought a 40th anniversary gold & black P-bass! Sweetwater had it on sale for just $389 and I had to jump, the colors are so me and it seems to be pretty popular online. Just starting to really get back into my bass guitar this year, and now I’ll have a 4 and 5 string. The bass just delivered the other day, I’m gonna give it a complete setup this weekend and I literally cannot wait to hear it sing!!

At the beginning i bought the Elite Jazz Bass, i paid 2000$ and wasn't satisfied with its sound, after selling it i bought this Squier for 600$ and i'm very satisfied with it!

Squier does make some late 50s P bass models ,I bought a white / blonde one with anodized pickguard and poplar body . a CME exclusive at $489 . $600 is a bit pricey for a squier when a player P bass was $674 a few years ago.
I do like these new squiers but I am unsure of the Natoya wood.

Este modelo da minha foto também é da edição de aniversário. Preto brilhante. Comprei ele por ser muito bonito, e gostei do som também.

I wouldn’t recommend buying these as collectors pieces or anything like that, some of the fender 75th anniversary basses from last year were put on sale. Still that satin 50s style p bass might make me buy a new bass for the first time in years

The Satin finishes are probably going to look a little bit more like an aged Nitro without actually using Nitro.
It is easy enough to knock back a gloss finish with very fine grit sanding pads to give the appearance of a well looked after aged Nitro instrument. Especially as rubbing completely through the thicker paint layers of a poly finish just looks wrong. So knocking back a gloss finish to a smooth satin is a good solution and perhaps explains why they have gone for the satin finish on the 40’th Vintage version. Tbh I would have preferred aged Gold hardware to go along with the gold anodised pickguard.
In the UK the Classic vibes are around £360 and the 40th edition basses £430. So an extra 70 quid for the 40th anniversary version. For the ones with gold hardware you can certainly see the reason. For the vintage version less so.
I would still love either of the special 40th Anniversary models. But it’s definitely not an instrument you would order. It would have to be seen and played first.

Interesting points about the finish versus lacquer. I wonder how feasible it would be for Squier to actually offer lacquer finishes -- not that Fender would ever do that -- considering they wouldn't have to deal with the extra costs due to environmental regulations. Thanks for the comment.

On the classic vibe 70s Jazz Bass the block inlays and binding are fake and just black paint. So if the 40th anniversary has binding on the neck and not white paint, your getting actually binding on the neck. I'll find out in a few days, I ordered the lake placid blue gold edition P bass.

These do in fact have real binding on them. I honestly love the feel of this P Bass and the finish is just gorgeous. I highly recommend these 40th Anniversary editions to anyone looking at the Squire range. So in conclusion your getting real binding on the neck and actual inlays on the fretboard that doesn't come on the classic vibes, since the classic vibes inlays and binding are painted on.

Now that these have been out for a while, I was able to buy 2 of the gold edition jazz basses in Ruby Red.
Other than the neck being super glossy they play and sound great. They actually play better and have better quality than my MIM Jazz bass.

The Squier stuff is usually awesome -- especially for the money. Those Ruby Jazz Basses are really sweet!
