    Nice review. I have had six Mini's and I have this 3 cylinder in the Clubman. It is surprisingly strong at city speeds. In the lighter 3 door I suspect it is great. You really only notice the low power when you hit it for merge or passing speeds. I think people will love the gas mileage but you do have to use premium.

    My wife has this car, thankfully without the armrest 😉had it 4 years and it’s been 100% reliable so far. The only slight complaint is the rapid brake pad wear compared with other cars that we have owned.

      Mine is 5 years old now. 100% agree. I think it's a great car (especially now I had it remapped it feels super quick!!) It does wear pads, but I think that's because there's virtually zero braking from the engine when slowing down it just coasts forever.

    Recently bought one of these, but the S trim (and plenty of the fancy, “I know I don’t actually need these features”), and I love it. Some major takeaways:
    1. The 4-cylinder is definitely better. Test driving the 3 was fine, but the full-sized engine is quicker and worth it.
    2. Consider ordering to get the moon roof deleted (what I did). It quiets the cabin quite a bit, and I did drive a tester with a squeaky one. Probably can have something like that fixed, but I’m in AZ, so less sunlight in the car is fine.
    3. The automatic is faster...part of this is me being new to a manual, but the auto is very good. If all you want is speed, get the auto w/ paddle shifters.
    4. The Starlight Blue looks AMAZING.

  • @briandg25ify
    @briandg25ify 5 років тому

    Funny that he mentions heel-toe downshifts.
    Minis have auto-rev matching (both on up and downshifts), so not so much. Some people dislike this feature but on snowy roads that means a quick downshift while turning will never force you into understeer.
    You still get engine braking, just not clutch braking (and your clutch will last longer).

  • @damnhockey
    @damnhockey 5 років тому

    The Mini Cooper has three options for accessory “Lines”. The Classic does not have keyless entry for $1,300 (can). Premier $2,000 adds keyless entry and Premier + $4,850 adds navigation and apple car play (the only way you can get it on a mini)
    Mini needs to replace the manual handbrake with an electronic hand brake. This would resolve the handbrake blocking the centre arm rest. They do this on the CountryMan.

    I absolutely love how even the base model comes standard with a panoramic sunroof. Maybe it's because I've just been driving dark and dingy econoboxes just a solid metal roof all my life. It's a shame how other manufacturers make you step up all the way to the highest tiers just to get one. And even then it's just a front sunroof. It's better than nothing, but come on. I'm sure they can do better. Especially with the growing trend of slopping roofs and smaller rear windows, a bit of extra light would be terrific. Just sit in a Cadillac ELR and you'll get what I mean. Sitting in one of those feels like a dungeon.

    The Mazda3 Sport starts at about $18k. It''s a bit faster than the Mini, runs on regular gas, has more interior space and handles like a sports car. I've owned both and the Mazda3 was a great driver's car. The nice thing about the Mini is that it kind of takes you back to the old sports car days when you could feel the road under you and the engine had a nice growl when you put your foot down. The Mini just feels more like an old British sports car where the Mazda3 feels more like a very capable touring sedan.

      @mx5hong 5 років тому +1

      @@Motormouth... It's a 2019. You can tell by the new Mini badge on the hood, oops, bonnet and hatch boot. It was refreshed for 2019.
      I think that the Union Jack tail light is not available on the base trim on the Cooper.
      Recently, Mini has divided all its models into three sub-trims. Classic, Signature and Iconic. Classic is the poverty spec while the Iconic is fully loaded. And Signature in the middle.
      Maybe Mini of Canada has done the same thing. I noticed that your sample has the manual climate control. So I'm guessing that you got the Classic trim. So no Union Jack tail lights.

    • @francoisg3500
      @francoisg3500 5 років тому +1

      mx5hong Thanks for the info! Because I was wondering why it didn’t have the Union Jack rear lights!

    • @mx5hong
      @mx5hong 5 років тому +1

      @@francoisg3500 It looks like Mini USA and Mini Canada does things a little different in terms of options.
      The sample car in the video looks like the US Signature trim which is the middle of the three trims offered in the U.S. I see the panoramic roof and the white colored roof. Two things not offered on the base Classic trim. And on the Signature trim, the LED headlights with the LED Union Jack tail lights are an option.
      So, the pano roof, contrasting roof color and optional LED lights are found in the U.S. Signature trim. But in the sample model, I see has the manual climate control which is only found on the lower Classic trim in the U.S. But the dual zone auto climate is standard on the U.S. mid-grade Signature trim and upper Icon trim.
      So yeah, it's confusing. And looking at Mini's Canadian site, Canada does have the three trim lines as in the U.S. But the names of the three trims are different and the standard and optional equipment are different from the U.S.

    Actually, a good review, glad you drove the manual gearbox and 3 cylinders engine. most reviewers always pick the top engine / specs car. and some good points about the quirks in the design.
    i have had 4 Mini cooper cars, 2x cooper, 2x cooper s models both Gen 1 & Gen 2. would be nice for the gen 3 to still retain a 1.6 turbo for the cooper S. 2litre is a big fuel bill for average user.
    major gripe i have with Mini Canada is the CEO should be fired because they don't let you customize like the old days, now they all seem to be Auto, and if you want heated seats you have to have a sunroof. i hate sunroofs, its extra weight, going to leak and spoils the looks and lines of the car.
    all Mini's should come standard with Manual transmission and hard roof, its the British thing. and only have Auto as an expensive option.
    Mini Canada needs to get their act together.

    You don’t have to raise the armrest if you only click the parking brake about three notches which is all that necessary. A lot of people love just rent shit on that parking break it up to six notches like it’s a 20% grade if the hill steep enough that three clicks won’t hold it and you either need to have your brake adjusted or your pads are going bad or you should be probably also putting it in gear as well if it’s that steep

    It is a very interesting position Mini puts you in. I'd get the auto if the trans was a Porsche type but a dual clutch unit reminds me of a ford plastic gear unit. I learned how to shift gears on an old 3 on a three on the tree unit. Driving around and around in a big parking lot. I thought about purchasing the electric unit but bmw missed out by not including a little motor along with it, an extender. Actually the mechanical end is pretty old as far as power units are concerned. A little antiquated The old mini had a better set up as far as the tranny clutch unit. I don't like driving 1950's cars in 2022.

    Interesting; I used to have a 1988 Chevy Sprint Turbo, 1.0 3 cylinder with 70hp and 107 lb-ft torque, which did 0-60 in 8-8.2 seconds. It literally weighed 1,000 lbs. less than the Mini. So, with a 50% larger engine and 60% higher curb weight, similar performance. That Sprint was really a slightly scaled up original Mini.

      I had the standard 1986 Chevy Sprint ER 3 cylinder 5 speed manual. I used to drive it from LA to San Francisco to visit my boys frequently and the only parts I changed in 4 years, aside from regular service, were the battery and a new set of tires. It was a dream to drive especially on winding roads and it handled better than my current 1998 BMW 318ti auto with 61,000 actual miles which my wife and I bought brand new in 1998. I just loved that Sprint ER.

    Not as cool. But Civic LX 6MT Sedan cost less and will out drive any of the tiny upstarts. Plus the Civic's 2.0L is like the 3cyl in the Mini, you can easily pull from 1000rpm or leave it in 2nd if you're lazy. However, it likes idling along in 5th at 40km/hr while maxing on the engine deactivation on the down hills... Might not seem right, but factor in that the Civic LX Sedan weight 2770lb.
    In Europe, there's a tax premium on bigger displacement engines, but not here. All the manufacturer jumping on the Turbo bandwagon seems clueless to that fact. Toyota is only one that's in the know.

    • @wiryantirta

      or they just don't want to spend R&D on different engines from different market, so they just develop for the trickiest (which is EURO-6 supposedly) and sell it everywhere.
      TOYOTA, in the other hand, SELLS A SHIT TON MORE EVERYWHERE, and are known for making VERY region-specific cars (not just a different name, but really a completely different car). So since they're spending money to develop a new car anyways, might as well use different engines anyways. And they probably have more parts bin to raid just because of that.

      I drive a 2016 Mini 2-door hardtop that I bought new in July 2016 and now have over 40,000 miles on it (65,000km) and have had ZERO maintenance issues whatsoever... everyone who has ever been in my MINI (named "Nigel") LOVES it and immediately wants one of their own... @@phuot1 @Jens KC that and the fact that dealers expect people to change cars every 3 years anyways (spare me of what you think how long you/people actually keep their cars for, im saying its the market type dealers love to jump on instead because they make more money and more frequently).
      So because of their business model you get new car maintenance/repair deals with dealers to the point that (probably a chicken and egg question at this point) its a good deal to lease since after those 3 year deals the overall operating cost would increase. Especially if you don't know how your car will be after 3 years.
