Dan is a national damn treasure
international now :) Greetings from holland
He’s to guitar luthier what Larry potterfield is to gunsmithing.
That last 30 seconds seemed to last forever
You just put a smile on my face. Thanks Dan!
Great stuff! But now you're guna have to fix that ding from when the lamp fell on the top. Lol
Just consider it as relic work
Lol, That's $50 more!
Not this lamp, it’s the greatest
Dan Erlewine Ima have to get one just like it then!!!
Handlebar Workshops Ima have to get one of them lamps so I can tell my customers, I noticed some dings in your top and I wanted to see if you wanted me to repair them for you. Hehehe Ole Dans tha man, he knows all the tricks of tha trade! 💪💪
Amazing to see such a great craftsman at work! Skills and experience galore.
Stewmac videos are some of my favorites on youtube, I love these!
The man has still got it 🥳 From SoCal via Ann Arbor (Go Blue) ... Cheers, Matthew.
So much fun to see you work in the video. Im not a guitar builder, but really enjoyed watching it
Love watching these videos! Thank you!
Love the suspenseful music... great videos
Simply a great Master!
Fun challenge! Nice work as always!👍
Great to see you still going strong, Dan!
Dan you're the man. That was awesome as always you're right on on par thank you
Dan you are just the best. A fantastic luthier and a dab hand at being the showman.
Excellent video. Very heart warming.
Way to go Dan!
You got my heart pumping with this but you kept your cool :-)
I like the use of a damp paint brush for glue cleanup!
Great job!
What a Great Bloke, nice job mate.
Dan I am forever endebted to you. I have learned and continue to learn so much from your instructional videos thank you
I need to order those clamps and that "bridge holder-downer thingy" 😂
That lamp seems like a really irritating thing to work with
Next I'd like to see "Fixing A Lamp Dent In A Spruce Top In 2 Minutes."
Just kidding; love every single one of Dan's videos.
Wow. Such an art.
Gold medal performance
I have the same band saw, and now i know you can add an extension! Thx!!
Funny score !
Dan is a master!
Not gonna lie though. When that lamp smacked the top of the guitar it made me chuckle.
I love this dude.
What a king
What a master, I wish I could be your student (in fact I am, watching your videos)
ChannelBOZ101 I wish so too
I've always wondered what the camera crew looked like ... now thanks to a little audience/staff participation I now know. Nice job... hell you could have used Snake Spit to stick it on and it would have been better than the old bridge!
I have to admit, I really didn't like seeing Dan have to rush!! lol He is the absolute best!
Metalcop Yeah but can't he move! :D
I use to have 67 Gibson which had no bridge at when I traded for it, I was shocked Gibson used a plastic bridge on this! It was my first bridge remake.
LMAO!! Dan, you are the man. Great job!
Oh ! I Love it. I took one of your lessons on fixing stripped screws on a neck and didn't use the proper grazy glues
Well guess what I gotta do it again, So I'll be ordering the right glue this time !!
Go, Dan, go!!!
You the man Dan
Muito bom grande mestre dá luthearia #Brasil.
All I could think of when she yelled out 15 seconds was, “You’ve got 15 second Macgruber!”
Always greatly enjoy Dan's videos. But no need to include the cleanup of squeeze out in the 2 minute challenge. Let the top and bridge cool down for a few minutes - when the glue gels a bit into a soft rubbery solid it can very easily be surgically removed with a palette knife and a thorough clean up of any residual glue can be done with minimal water use.
AWESOME!
That was awesome !!!!! 😂
cool video! I noticed no caul under the saddle?
Nice Job Dan!!! Duane from DW Video and the Welcome to my Basement Jus Jammin music therapy group. wipe the sweat off ha ha
Dan is the man.
Amazing it is helpful for me dear
Bravo!!!
Maestro!!
Ditto...Over here in the land of Oz on Tropic of Capricorn under a humongous Southern Cross by Pacific Ocean, thinking "What a beautiful dude". Hope to tackle a bridge my self and wetting down first would even have to work with titebond emulsion. Over years have acquired enough Stew Mac tools/materials/skills to do lot's of fun things to my twenty or more gats.
All part of a collective hive, really.
If I don't have the clamps and that bridge like steel, is there any DIY alternatives?
Please help! I've got an acoustic Fender F-35 from 1977. It is my first guitar I played 16 hrs a day on it for years and now 42 years later it broke. Its got a split in the bridge just in front of the saddle which rendered it unplayable. I would like to know what replacement kit/part I can purchase that has bridge/saddle/pins/and nut to match. I would rather have an ebony bridge but will use a rosewood as it is what it came with. Some options with a transducer install might be good as well. I have plenty of electric guitars and just two non-electric acoustics. It might be nice to have the option to plug into an amp rather than have the mic stand in my way during performances.
LOL! That was nice!
How do you fix small chips on the top that result from bridge removal. Example matching color and sheen?
That's a big subject and hard to address in UA-cam comments. And finish touch up is difficult. You can browse the Videos & Ideas Section of our Website to find some tips on finish repair, but you might also want to get a first hand opinion from a good repair shop. Thanks!
Great video, thanks. I'd like to ask you one question. I made a diy wooden clamp that goes over the bridge, is curved on the bottom to fit the bridge top and connects, trough the string peg holes, with the lower (inside of guitar body - under the bridge) part of the clamp via 4 threaded (4mm) rods that are tightened with 4 wing nuts ... and there is one hole on each side of the upper clap for the rod that pushes the wings of the bridge down with the help of small pieces of wood. So ... I have removed everything except for the lower part of the clamp which is now glued to the top from the inside and does not want to come off. Tried really hard to kinda snap it away, with no success. Drilled all 12 holes all the way trough the bottom (I used a metal drill bit for the four holes that had metal inserts for the rods, there is still a thin metal cylinder left inside of the lower clamp - could present a problem if I wanted to use a hole reamer to try to fix my problem) of the lower part of the clamp wood and it still does not budge, not for a 1/1000 of an inch or millimetre. Would you maybe know how does one go about a thing like that? How can I "know" where the thing is glued or how much, when there is no way to see? Is that possible or should I leave the part glued and try to slowly widen the holes so that the pegs fit normally?
Bravo 👏
Did you have a caul underneath?
And now… blindfolded!!! 😀
What kind of glue did you used bro
Now I've seen it all
Had no idea Gibson EVER used a plastic bridge, entry level LG-1 notwithstanding. Old time luthiery in Kalamazoo just lost a little luster. I smell a penny pinching number cruncher.
Starting in the mid 60's for several years half of the LG line (the Juniors of acoustics) lg-0, lg-1, lg-2 used them and also the B-25 and some of the J models that used the adjustable saddles had a plastic bridge too and probably a few others. The bridge in the video that he said "throw away" was near mint. They almost all have wavy plastic at best, most are warped, bent, cracked, or ROTTEN. True story
"Probably they did run out of brown wood" ... too kind 😂😂😂!!!
0:32 "They probably couldn't find brown plastic"
Is that what you were quoting?
Haha... well done!
Hello! I am in another project and I want to ask you a question ... I hope you can answer me, I have a polyurethane paint to catalyze ... of those that apply with direct brightness ... but I also want to apply transparent also based on polyurethane catalyzed . Is it right to do that?
It sounds like you have a polyurethane color coat that cures using a UV light source, and you're wondering if you can apply clear top-coats of the same UV catalyzed polyurethane over top the color coats. Is that correct? It stands to reason that if both polyurethane finishes are from the same manufacturer, they are likely compatible with each other. We recommend checking the manufacturer's website. You can usually find this kind of information under a "Frequently Asked Questions" section of a manufacturer's website. The best way to find a definitive answer would be to test both finishes on some scrap wood.
Nice job... just don't dare rush with MY guitar!
I have a newbie idiot question.
Some context , I bought an acoustic bass recently. The preamp is dead. I have order a new one .the bridge pins have disintegrated. So I have ordered and acoustic bass bridge and pins set, they have skulls 😊
The problem is the new bridge doesn't have the wholes drilled for strings or for pick up,and the bridge pins are too small to fit the old bridge(dubious that there made for a bass as the strings seem to be to gaugey )
If I drill wholes big enough for bass string ends the pins don't fit ,if I have the wholes small enough for the pins the strings won't fit in normally.
So I guess the question is . Can I just cheat and feed the strings through from inside the cavity and will they be secure and functional ?
How much time did you spend on preparation?
Dan probably spent about a half an hour preparing before gluing the bridge in place. We recommend taking as long as it takes to get comfortable with the job at hand, until you feel truly prepared. You should make at least two dry runs, but often times three or more is a good idea.
Bravo!!!
: )
never had a doubt ;)
Hello Dan, and thank you for the tutorial. Your cute friend Susan was super too. Question for you Dan...where do I find some of that "hot, high glue" I think you called it?? I have to replace and reglue the bridge on my acoustic guitar and was not sure what type of glue to use (it's gotta be strong, I know), and then I saw your video. Would it be possible to direct me to finding some of the glue you used?? Thanks Dan, and keep up the good work. ~Michael~
Thanks, Mike! Here's a link to the hot hide glue. www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/supplies/glue-and-adhesive/glues/wood-glues/stewmac-ground-hide-glue.html We've also done a video on using hide glue. Check that out here: ua-cam.com/video/ER1T5zMKG-g/v-deo.html.
Dan's a hoot... 😂
👍👏
The light falling on the body at 1:40 :)
Like making Chinese food... 17 hours of prep, 30 seconds of cooking, 2 minutes of eating and 5 hours of pooping.
holy hot hide glue batman - this guy's fast
Dang, I wanted to see how your removed the plastic bridge.
hahaha cool very good i like it
Unfortunately, these types of replacement bridges still require holes drilled into the sound board.
To be the man, you gotta beat the man.
Goat😊
I was actually nervous :)
Not sure what the point is for rushing such an important job.
That's great Dan, 2 min. that's 30 in an hour or 240 in a day. And maybe more because the more you do the faster you get. Ha Ha, great work
When you charge your work not by the hour, but by the minute.
My respect to You , Sir ,from Ukraine !
Turns out the bridge was glued uneven to the top wood
the modesty says fellow midwesterner
Nice work as always Dan...but the video is 3:36!
To the skeptics out there- don't be afraid, hot hide glue is your friend!
Yep. Just need to work fast so it doesn't gel.
Customers want to pay for only 2 mins workshop time from now on lol.
Fish glue forever!!
It's the taste test that makes it so special ...
Well yeah, if you wander off round the room it might take longer.
I wouldn't like to know that my guitar's bridge was replaced in 2 mins 😂
Specially when you figure out how much have you payed by the minute.
Ha-ha...glued it on backwards! ;o)
what drugs are you on
Better ones than us the lucky devil!
It's called comedy dude. Always hated the reverse belly bridge.
Oh sorry I thought it was all an inline joke. I hope I haven't upset anyone with my comment it was honestly meant in jest...
No man, not at all.
Молодец дед, не теряет присутствие духа!
want to do it quicker and with more risk? use superglue.
Sure one of those clamps was lose, at least one. There's no need to rush like that. Any mistake and it just has to be redone. You're the champ, you don't have to prove it.
Fast but... to 1:39 ... 😒
Dan, bravo, but I think I can shave 25 seconds off your time.
I much prefer seeing the long format of a bridge replacement. Dan looked too hurried and it ruined the moment for me!
Some like it short and sweet... at Dan's age he's probably showing he can do it both ways just to make a point... ;0)
I think dan worked fast because hot hide glue has a really short open period. So if he worked too slowly and the glue dried before he set the bridge, he’d have a lot more work to do to fix it
