Allman Bros Band…just phenomenal in classic blues, blues rock, country rock, jazz infused blues….and such original twin lead style…they are timeless. They set the bar very high. 5 Stars!
Thanks for this Joe. Dickey is so missed and it's wonderful that you took the time to honor him. His music created the soundtrack for my life. May God bless you.
Thx so much Joe. Bringing bk alot of memories. I was born n raised in Macon, GA which is where the Allman Bros called home too. My Dad was a roadie w em for a time. I saw Dickey at Gregg's funeral. I'm not sure if anyone besides me n my ex wife recognized him. We were graveside while the service was going on. Maybe 50-100 ppl when first arrived. A car pulled up n Dickey got out n looked long and hard at Duane and Berry's graves and the hole that would shortly be Gregg's. He said a prayer quietly and left. I had always hoped for a reunion w the Bros and Dickey but some things might be better left alone. Now they're all at peace except Chuck. Thx again
This is one of the things I've always loved about Joe...he's ALWAYS giving something back. Not only sharing his great talent but always bring others to the front. You're GREAT Joe!
Nice tribute Joe, to a legendary guitarist and of course, Les Paul, pride of Waukesha ,WI near us. Never got to see Dicky live, we've never seen you live but looking forward to the latter.
Joe you are a genuine human being and God blessed you with talent so use it only for good! We need to bring back a show with you playing with your friends like the old “Darryl’s Place” TV show. I think it would be a hit show! Thanks for coming back to Columbia County, Augusta GA we already have our tickets 👏
Thanks for that tribute Joe. We went to see a local band the day after Dickey's passing, they played mostly country blues, and I asked the guitar player on break about Dickey. He almost broke down in tears saying Dickey was a huge influence on him. The band came back on and player Ramblin' Man in memory of Dickey. A truly great evening.
Joe, I saw that same band and it was called BHLT..Betts, Jimmy Hall, Trucks, Levell. It also featured David Goldflies on bass. They were great we saw them in NYC. He was using his SG at those shows and it sounded fantastic. Thanks for the video..I love his tome and now know how to dial it in…
Thank you for this Joe for this piece on Dickey Betts, Dickey and Duane are the reason that I play guitar and music in general. I started out playing classical music on the piano, then went to electric bass guitar, then to electric guitar plus other instruments. I started playing when I was 5 years old and I'm now 65 years old. So thank you once again for keeping the blues music alive.
You've got my BIG AMEN! 😮😂❤ And that coming from a huge Strat guy- Betts and Duane were the reason many ppl. started a music 🎶 journey-- EC, Billy Gibbons-- 💭 the list is endless Oh, can't leave out Robt. Cray, Buddy guy Doyle Bramhall, SRV
Hey Joe! It's Alan.in NYC Always nice to see ya. Commenting cuz I couldn't agree more about Dickie. What a great talent, & influence on me as well. Hope you're doing great, my friend...
Love Betts..my favorite musician ever.. We saw him in NYC countless times and I always loved when he played his SG… he just always tore it up on that guitar.
Sure miss that band....I'm old enough to have seen them all play live ....they're the reason I play guitar today.....Duane and Dickie ....learned every lick on Live at the Fillmore before there was UA-cam
They're the reason I play and the reason my middle name is Duane lol. And my sisters name is Jessica. I was born in 81.. Never saw them live as I didn't get into them until later in my life. The only show I'd have been able to see was the 50th Anniversary show in 2020. Growing up, that's all you heard at my house and as a kid, I never got into it. It was only after I got sober and my head cleared that I realized how much I love that music. So I started listening and before long, I remembered that I wanted to learn to play. And then hearing ABB with a clear head just stoked that fire. BIG TIME. I've played ever day for over 4 years straight at this point. I started maybe 4.6 years ago lol.
Saw them in February 1972, shortly after Duanes death, like Joe says, Dickey commanded the stage and that tone live was another world, he had the Goldtop with those Fillmore Marshalls and that LP tone was unmistakeable.
It’s sad to see the guys who played the music we love leave us. What we can do is learn some of their songs and honor their memory by doing so. God bless em.
Thanks for this Joe. Loved Dickie Betts. Blue Sky, Jessica, truly masterpieces. On a side note, I appreciate your knowledge on guitar history. Both players and equipment. Funny, when I watch you play when not on stage, I see that kid on those early tv appearances.
Dickey was phenomenal, the Brothers always had superb players. Warren a complete legend as well, Derek, unreal. And I have a daughter named Jessica born like cousin Joe said 1990... Another great video
Excellent video. I have for a long time been bothered by the absence of attention given to Dickey Betts. I learned of him and the rest of the Allman Brothers Band by chance when attending the Quicksilver Messenger Service concert in Houston in June of 1971. We went to hear Quicksilver only and the others were just bonus bands as far as we knew. ZZ Top opened but didn't play long. When the ABB played, we didn't even want them to stop! Lots of long songs by them and QMS. I've been a ABB fan and been attempting to play their songs ever since. Got my first LP Standard a couple of weeks ago, 53 years later!
I'll never forget the impact, I was 17, when I heard them on the radio for the 1st time. And they were young guys & they were Americans! Never heard anything like it before or, since. and to this day, in my book absolutely the G.O.A.T.
Thanks Joe. Just saw Allman/Betts in HI, they have some great music now and Dickey is still coming thru. BTW You are invited here to Oahu anytime. Please come for a visit. Aloha JB
Joe, I remember Colemans from way back. Fun times there. Thanks for honoring Dickie. The ABB is and was the soundtrack of my formative years growing up in Oneida Co.
One player that doesn't get enough love is Dan Toler, he fit that band well on guitar, it would be great to see Joe Bonamassa do a segment on his style, very underrated player
That would have been 1988! I first met Dickey in 1968 when I was 15. He was really great amazing. He was the best guitar player I'd seen (until I saw Hendrix in Sept. of `68 in Tampa.
Yeah man! Now you're speaking my language. I loved Dickey Betts. My First concert was 1981 when Dickey and Dan were the duo. What an underrated pair they were. Dan was definitely dangerous!
My oldest daughter was born in 1993 and is named after that song. They let us bring a boom box into the delivery room, and that's the first song her little ears ever heard.
6 years old? Impressive. Dicky actually played a PRS McCarty for a while in the mid to late 90s. Saw them many times at the Beacon in the 80s and 90s. Great memories of the Alllman Bros. RIP Greg, Dickey, Duane, Butch. You will” never be forgotten.
Dicky Betts when I first became aware of what music meant and I was about 12 I heard a garage band of older guys covering them ...Allman brothers were kinda new on the music scene ....1969-70 , I was a kid discovering live music .....and this is what I remember hearing .
I lived in Rome NY for 16 years there's a lot of Musicians that came from that town and still today if you visit that town make sure you go out in Rome, Utica area and listen to some of the bands they're some of the best I've ever heard.Including Joe Bonamassa.
I met Dickey and Duane backstage in 1971 Dickey let me play his goldtop Duane showed me a new LP he was buying ( the darkburst hot lanta) I had a 57 3 pickup custom then that Duane was interested in that gave me so credentials to talk to them. Great humble guys. Duane told me to buy 50W Marshall head forgot to tell me the bass head lol. Those were the days.😢
A fine tribute, well-done Joe Bonamassa. For his compositional excellence, Dickie Betts deserves a separate RRHoF induction apart from the ABB's. Won't happen but ot should.
Dickie was so good, his phrases and touch were unmatched. Live at Filmore East is untouchable. Got to see him with his own band in 2004 at the Surf Ballroom, and they played Elizabeth Reed. 🎉
In 1983, I was in a rock cover tune band and opened for Gregg Allman in Myrtle Beach, SC. during that string of east coast dates he was playing that you attended! This was back when he was setting Duane's LP on a stand in the dressing room. Greg had fallen off the Wagon and stayed behind to party for 3 days. He came back to the club every night and jammed with us as we were there for the whole week. I was sitting with him at Rock Burgers at 3AM when some chic came in, cussed him out saying they had to cancel gigs and took him away. 😂
This. I came to post this. Thank you! And thank you, Joe! 🙏

Love this! Couldn’t listen to Joe cop Dickey licks for hours haha. Well done
Graduated high school ‘76 in Texas.
The Allman brothers band was it 🏁

BHLT, the greatest band most have never heard of
Love your perspective of guitar history, Joe, and your awareness of your and others place in it. Well said.
I’ve been a fan of the guitar man in the hat since the beginning. RIP Dickey.
Thank you for this Joe for this piece on Dickey Betts, Dickey and Duane are the reason that I play guitar and music in general. I appreciate the knowledge Joe has about that music.A lot folks get the timeline wrong and the importance of who was involved.
Joe did a beautiful tribute.
Dickey is still HUGELY underrated!!!!
Duane said that too, many times
Enjoyed that, Joe. Thank you…
Probably my favorite band, just great and musical without massive walls of distortion.
Can I get a big amen for this fine tribute from Joe to Dickie? Rest in peace, Dickie; I'll hear those notes flying off your fingers as long as I live
Amen, it was a lovely tribute.

He could rip on a strat too, but I've seen some magic on the Gold Top. I was never so excited when he brought it out. I believe his son has it now.
Fantastic stuff Joe.
Thank you
I can’t tell you how much his music moves me. Thanks for honoring him! Loved hearing this.
a great tribute, befitting a great, fantastic guitarist, musician and artist! Joe's technical knowledge and demo is a major bonus too
Allman bros was my first concert in 72 just before Berry died.Dicky was playing the sunburst that show.😊
Dreams was my favorite Allman Bros. Tune.
Great great great video, Joe! Dickie is an absolute legend! You’ve honored his playing perfectly!

Wonderful insight and tribute to the late great Dickey Betts. Thanks Joe, you’re the best!

Mr Betts really was one of the true greats

Dangerous Dan Toler. Bad ass guitar player.

The ABB on stage with the Grateful Dead RFK is amazing.
Thanks for this, you're a class act.
saw them at the forum in 73. He was playing a sunburst LP
thanks joe you are very knowlegable.

Dickey was my first guitar hero. And still is a hero. RIP Forrest Richard
Right on Joe! Saw him play many times.

Dickey definitely had his own sound. It’s one on my favourite guitar stylings. His country based leads were uplifting.
Very nice, I enjoyed your tribute to DB, recognize his riffs anywhere!. ABB plays in my house/car every single day, peace
I met Dickey and Duane backstage in 1971 Dickey let me play his goldtop Duane showed me a new LP he was buying ( the darkburst hot lanta) I had a 57 3 pickup custom then that Duane was interested in that gave me so credentials to talk to them. dickey could slide across the floor and to his knees while soloing.Dickey was a top 10 rock talent smooth as silk.
I’m No Angel Tour one of my firsts, Valley Forge Music Fair 1987, Dangerous Dan on guitar, incredible. BB King opened. The good old days.
The harmonics Dickie and Duane could get out of their guitars playing together still makes the hairs stand up on my arms
Dickey. Underrated.
You can look at all videos of dickey he allways had his gold top in the rhythm switch position......RIP. mr betts
Blue Sky was the first lead guitar riffs I learned on the guitar. The man was smooth.
The Blue Sky from SUNY Stonybrook 9•19•71 with Dickey and Duane is one of the greatest things ever
Nice job Joe.
Nossa como o Joe está acabando,o tempo não foi muito gentil com ele, apesar disso seu talento inigualável não depende da sua aparência.
His lead playing always reminded me of fiddle lines
He was influenced by western swing, which is very fiddle heavy.
yes👍👍
A fine tribute, well-done Joe Bonamassa.
For his compositional excellence, Dickie Betts deserves a separate RRHoF induction apart from the ABB's. Won't happen but ot should.
They were called BHLT. Saw them open for Johnny Winter at The Capitol in Passaic NJ 1983. The concert is actually on youtube. Good job JB!
Betts was a MONSTER player!! Big influence on myself. He did not noodle. He MEANT what he played!
Dickie was so good, his phrases and touch were unmatched. Live at Filmore East is untouchable. Got to see him with his own band in 2004 at the Surf Ballroom, and they played Elizabeth Reed. 🎉
Thanks. THis helps me figure out the chain that Dickey used. I was always How did he get that trebly tone on the neck pickup thru Marshalls? lol
i saw dickey in park city utah in a bar ,unbeliveable at least. No seating just a bar
Dicky and Duane some great sounds
Gibson SG for the Fillmore shows.. available on You Tube to view.
