    So funny seeing the different personalities to the dewormer. Happy to know they get a tasty treat afterwards. I'm 34 and have religiously vowed to my parents that I will have a horse before I die, haha. So great to find these kind of helpful videos. I'm most familiar with birds like chickens, but ruminant animals, I am having to do my research.

    • @garypoortvliet2478
      @garypoortvliet2478 Рік тому +3

      Just so you know, horses are not ruminants. They have a relatively normal gastrointestinal tract. That is why you have to be careful what and how much you feed them. Cows and goats are ruminants, and can eat a lower quality of hay, and are more forgiving on overfeeding.

      Yeah my b, ruminant is what it is. My family wants goats and possibly cows so there are those. I try to learn what I can as much as possible. Things like colic and/or bloat scares me. I know most mammals and birds well enough, but I still have plenty to learn. I hope to have that knowledge before having any.@@garypoortvliet2478

There’s so much to learn tho. Almost seems a bit overwhelming, like for one I didn’t know about the hay ratio. I thought hay was hay…🤦🏼‍♀️ now our friends have welcomed us to come visit her horse at the local stables. Is horse therapy a thing? "Dont skip on your horse nutricion" wel feeding 2x a day is foo little. A horse i designed to eat almost constantly. When you feed less then 3x a day there stomach acid gets too stong. I feed AT LEAST 3x a day. When my horse was still stalled at my home i fed her 5x a day. The feeding ball is a really good idea tho. It keeps your horse thinking and helps to let your horse eat slowly over a longer time. I do it with a regular bucked with holes. My horse really likes it. Also its better to ragularly get your horse checked for worms instead of deworming. I know deworming is made to not harm your horse but ive seen several times that horses get sick of too much deworming. Its poison after all and why would you give it if they dont need it. I have my horse for 3 years now and she has never had worms.

    Hello!! New beginner horse owner here, I very new to having a horse. He became my family horse a year ago when he ran to our home and our family was asked if we would like to buy him we had just moved to our land 5 acres in TX and my parents agreed to purchase him from the neighbors who could no longer care for him. We are city folk who are doing the best we can to learn as we go.
    He currently free feeds foliage all day on our 5 acres and gets 8 pds of grain each morning. Is there something that needs to be added to his diet? He is a hefty boy but I worry we all right providing him the best diet. any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much I enjoy your videos.

Grain/ feed. 50 lb bag 2x per month. 26.00 each. 1 3qt scoop in the morning & one at night. Alfalfa hay 21.99 per 2 string bale. One per week. 3 flakes per day. Plus his daily supplements. Figure about 150 per month on feed alone. Farrier comes every 6 to 8 weeks to trim feet. 30 dollars. Dentist 2xs per year 90 per visit. Dewormer every 3 months. 10 dollars. Vet appointment for annual vaccination. Add 100. You can add on extras. I buy good grain/ good hay & with his supplements he does wonderfully. Hope that gives you an idea.

    Although i love this video because of the horses an their personalities! Its not the process of buying a horse for the first time. I wanna know if there’s licensing that needs done , is there a department of horsey services that come in to make sure its horse proof an safe, whats the paperwork process. Is insurance mandatory, is there two different kinds of insurance, like one for medical an one for stable/ barn home insurance for the horses? Do u have to pay taxes on them every year like u would a car? Is registration a thing? What to look for when buying a horse, what to avoid doing. How to tell if a horse is a good fit for u. Is there a probationary stage to make sure they get along with the other animals. What ways people try to lie about things regarding the horse an how to spot some red flags. I mean i need some in depth info regarding the buying the horse for a first time

    A couple horse breeds in mind I am wondering about to get. I love jumping and always have since I was young, I am looking for a new horse breed and can’t decide whether which one is best to have. The options are Oldenburg, Hanoverian, or palomino. I am pretty tall I’d say maybe around 5’9.5 /5’10which is definitely a reason for taller horse breeds. I am leaning towards a Hanoverian since my aunt is friends with a horse breeder. But I haven’t made any decisions because I’ve never have had a Hanoverian. Do you know anything about them and if they’re more difficult to deal with. My aunt currently set the gelding aside but I would love some help if you know anything?

    • @BarrettHouser
      @BarrettHouser  3 роки тому +4

      I have some experience with some English breeds, but not much to be honest with you. What I would say for any new horse, discipline or breed that you are unfamiliar with is to go and take a lot of time around them. Just learn for a good period of time what those horses are like. Then figure out what you like and don't like about them. Every breed is a touch different and every horse within that breed is different based on how they are breed, trained and taken care of. It is all trial and error. If you are new to horse ownership all together, then I would just say find someone who is really knowledgeable about horses and spend as much time as you can picking their brain and spending time with them.

      The horse will end up to cooperate I mean as long as they eat the paste or powder it doesn't truly matter how you do it but putting paste into an apple the horse could easily not eat it you could try to freeze it with sugar water or spread it on a salt brick it depends on the horse tbh but you can try many ways you cpuld try to devolve the powder into water or just put it in the food they don't really notice the powder in my opinion hope this helps
