This episode takes an in-depth look at Burton's criminal history, the events leading up to his infamous rampage, and the subsequent manhunt that ended in his capture. We discuss the psychological factors that may have influenced Burton's actions, the legal repercussions, and the lasting effects on the victims and their families. The case of Graeme Burton is a harrowing reminder of the complexities of the criminal mind and the importance of robust correctional systems.

Im from new Zealand and ill never not be disgusted with how light about our criminal justice system and prison sentence are in this country.
Its not justice at all
I live in the USA and I was like what? Why such light sentences? Here in the states they throw book at ya for everything but hurt children or women and not only is the justice system gona stick it to ya , when they get to prison the inmates serve up their own justice
Follow kiwi here 🙋♀️ and completely agree. Our justice system is a joke
It’s the same in the uk! pisstake and a total f-you to the victims and their poor families, and crimes to do with children 😢 don’t even get me started these monsters cannot be rehabilitated it’s been proven time n time again it just escalates, so so frustrating as allot of these terrible crimes could’ve been prevented!!!!
I'm Adam's cousin. I reconnected Kelly with him. This is so wrong. Sorry Emma
Agreed! When I see the kinds of harsh sentences people receive overseas for the same crimes that they get off so lightly for over here, it really makes me question our criminal justice system, and makes me really sad for the victims. People literally get away with murder here.
#8:35 I was adopted in 1978, one month before my 11th birthday. There was so much jealousy, from an older friend, of my middle sister, that, this family actually took me back to the orphange, less than a year into the adoption. This friend, of my middle sister, was NOT adopted...she just found a sad story and weazled her way into the home.
The older friend actually packed my belongings & rode along to bring me back to the orphanage. I don't remember how long that I was there, once returned. I remember picking up the phone and making a long distance call to ask the adopted mother what it was that I did, so badly, to be brought back..
She didn't have an answer & they came back & got me.
I really do wish Id've left well enough alone.
So, there are some heartless ppl out there that have no business children rearing.
I agree some people don’t deserve children or a child & I’m sorry to hear you was treated so badly and it’s sad these people can slide by educated social workers to get blessed with a child , makes me sick
I hope everything turned out well for you and you had a good upbringing. ✌🏻💚🙏🏼
To a narcissist, image is everything. The social kudos of adopting an orphan is what they wanted, but not actually being a good family to you. You did nothing wrong. My mother was a narcissist and, omg, she was such a martyr and I was such a burden, she and the family was convinced I would end up in prison and wasn't they all so wonderful to put up with me? Me, so rotten that I have never been in trouble in my life, joined the army to get away from them then put myself through university and raised 2 law abiding children...you see, it's not us. We are proof it's not us. It's them. They are rotten and they have to disguise that. I hope you are well, and thriving. I wish you peace and luck.
That's incredibly sad, I feel so much for you x
@@saydvoncripps I Married a Covid Narcissist who totally destroyed me mentally you did so well to survive your experience. It took people a long time to see past the image she created.
Emma, please please please google NIA GLASSIE.
She was a gorgeous child who went to hell and back in NZ. She needs your take on the MONSTERS that made her suffer.
I'm in New Zealand and remember this very well and Dulcilia Whitaker ..we have a shocking rate of violence against children here and yet again the perbs get off with small sentences ..it's disgusting 😪😪
@jaynewatson1616 and the Kahu twins. Just horrific cases. And often no one held accountable.
@@lizbmusic11 I was thinking of those babies after I posted. They would be the same age as my daughter now, was hard to watch that coverage with a new born myself 😔
This makes me so sad that my own country, New Zealand, doesn't have a law to keep someone like in prison indefinitely.
My sister used to tell me I was adopted and not wanted. When I asked my mum the answer I got was “well, you weren’t planned” I was devastated. I also remember a huge argument when I was very young my dad telling my mum that she’d ruined his life by having me as they couldn’t move to Australia now. That has never left me
Your dad sounds like an ass, I'm sorry. Your mum and you did not deserve that.
That's so sad! 😢 Parents should never blame their kids for how their life turned out weather the Child was planned or unplanned. Sending you big hugs & you are here for a Perpouse, the Cosmos works in Mysterious ways! X x
i understand that feeling as well!! The things that were told to me for my being adopted have never left the back of my mind!People are free about the things they say in front of children....At least the pain of it all left me when I became an adult. It took a bit of shadow work, and healing of my inner child. I know you can learn to emotionally remove yourself from the facts of it all, and I pray you can have peace, because it is the greatest gift you can give yourself.Namaste!🙏
@@lunastars8100 Thank you x I was in my bed as a small child when I heard the argument about ruining lives by being born. I have never told my mum I heard it. I think of her feelings and wouldn’t want her to feel bad
I'm adopted. Despite a wonderful upbringing I've still had my struggles. I never bonded with my mother. I'm a recovering addict. Meeting my birth family has enabled much healing thankfully.
I'd love to hear you cover a school friend of mines case, Jade Bayliss. It's another NZ case, her killer had murdered a 15 year old boy in Australia before taking her life.
Emma New Zealand sentencing is light full stop, we have reafffending murderers that have been out and in all over the country. Very distressing for our society!
Not much different to the UK then. It's crazy isn't it.
Unless it's fraud... Then you get in real trouble
Fack our society dgaf
And it’s reoffending
That's if they get convicted...
Wouldn't it be a great idea if parole board members where found accountable and charged for any criminal offences committed by criminals they have parolled, how many of these dangerous people would they let out if they where accountable ? Great video as always Emma ❤
No it wouldn’t be a great idea, as obviously no one would get parole, even those who deserve it. The human mind is incredibly hard to comprehend let alone predict and unfortunately the parole system is never going to be perfect. This is not to condone what happened here.
💯💯💯 As if anyone can completely predict and forsee all factors that can be involved in future reoffending. They get it wrong, of course they do, but its not black and white like that. It's actually a horrible, horrible idea @merhaba8
I'm in NZ and omg, that stabbing brought back horrible memories and the drama in the Wainuimata hills that night. I was living in Wellington at the time and had partied at the Carpark. We were all traumatised by that event. And everyone knew Burton was attacking dealers. The sentence Burton got was a joke. So much bloodshed. It's ridiculous that in NZ, criminal's injuries are covered by our ACC system.
Thanks for my membership Emma, I've recently been diagnosed with cancer and having my operation in 10 days so will be binge watching you while I recover 😊 🙂 xxx
Sending you love and positive energy, hope the op goes well! X
I really hope your operation goes well Amanda. I'm three years cancer free this year - it's hard, but there's light at the end of the tunnel.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wishing you well Amanda ❤❤❤
wishing that your op goes ok and a speedy recovery!
I often think that in cases like this where the Parole Board are so neglegent & careless they ultimately should be answerable to a judge given the subsequent crimes he went on to commit.
Sadly they just don’t seem to care, like you can rape and murder and get leniency but if you sell drugs you’ll get a tougher sentence. I’ve actually seen drug dealers get longer sentence than people who have beat a child to death. It is my belief ( and I’ve had this confirmed by talking with police officers) that they are deliberately lowering our prison population to make us look like a good safe country
Shirley loved Graeme. She adored him and gave him everything she could. Graeme refused to stay in his lane and would always push his limits in every aspect of his life. She did have an older school take on parenting but she was a really empathetic loving and caring person both as a mother and person in general.
Can we start a protest about these failures and actually try to make a change? Power is in numbers and people and these organisations get away with way too much. Thanks Emma x
All about money!!!
Sadly it’s true about the money statement
I love when you go off on your role plays…stating such obvious points, that for some reason others just didn’t see!! Great content as always!
I love them too! X x
Happy Easter to Emma and to all her true crime fans 🐇🐣 Hope everyone is having a lovely Easter and the Easter bunny has been kind X
People who place their children for adoption very rarely “abandon” them as Emma states. Rather, they take the incredibly brave, courageous and selfless decision to live with the grief of giving up their child in order that said child can have a better life than they can currently provide.
Yes. Except that in most cases the braver thing to do is whatever it takes to look after your child. Only a parent can love as we do.
Within context, I think she meant from his perspective, the way many adopted children have feelings of abandonment.
@@HighMaintenancePS please live in reality with us. It takes a lot more than just love.
I have lots of childhood trauma, so as an adult I struggle I’ve tried every antidepressants but they either didn’t work or stop working. I’m currently I’m on 150mg of Amitriptyline and 30mg of Duloxetine, I’m no longer allowed to be prescribed Valium or sleeping pills. I understand I can’t be on those medications forever.
So, I looked towards medical cannabis, I had interviews with a psychiatrist and I was granted a prescription. The company is called Lyphe, and it has given my life back. I make cookie to take it because I don’t smoke. I eat a cookie an hour before I go out and half a cookie at night to help me sleep. But sometimes I don’t have any at all.
I am pro medical cannabis, it’s help me reclaim my life back.
Great you've found your cure. My cue is a small glass of white wine with my tea. I sleep like a baby and am healthier than ever. Amytryp is weird. Best without it maybe....
I'm the same the Dr's absolutely messed me up using me as a guinea pig for all their horrible antidepressants thst made me feel horrible and pile on weight which really affected my mental health so I refuse to take them now. I'm on diazepam for anxiety because none of the other 7 tablets they tried me on worked and I smoke twice a day now its helps massively with my anxiety and with sleep. I hadn't had a full night's sleep in about 5 years! I'm 100% for medical cannabis.
I've been self medicating with marjuana for almost 30 yrs also because of childhood trauma and ordeal... I am a massive advocate for the benefits of this plant.... Man made Booze God made Grass 😊 I wish u sleep filled nights and peace of mind xxx
Im so glad you found a dr. that actually is concerned, by giving you the oppurtunity to get away from all the pschotropics. They are very temporary, and the side effects are horrible... especially with what you were prescribed.Cannabis is a wonder plant, good for so many things... youve got your life back... dont let anyone put you back on the wrong path! Best to you!
@@joanieperry4110marijuana is a psychotropic. It's really silly to boil the argument down to black and white "pharmaceuticals bad, marijuana good." Many things can be true at once and blanket statements like yours are almost always incorrect.
I love how Chace is a frequent guest in your content Em, he’s so adorable 🥰 thank you for this case not one I have heard of before but still thrilled for the deep dive. Hope you all had a lovely Easter. Happy Easter Kenny’s Crime Kult 🐣🩷

Please could you cover the Mitchelle Blair case and also The Edlington Brothers case as I haven't seen much on either of these. Keep up the good work :) (By the way LOVE the new top featuring the gorgeous Chase!)
Okay, shocking. I'm speechless, but can we please appreciate the hoodie Emma is wearing and the arrival of said cat? 😂 Just purrrfect.😻 The fact that he could be released at 63 reminds me of Peter Tobin. His first known murder wasn't uncovered until his arrest in 2006 in his 60s.😮
1:17:55 Thank you, Emma, for covering this case. It goes to the awareness of the impunity that sometimes criminals get away with.
Hi Emma. You are addictive…
Amazing work and dedication 💐💐💐
Didn’t know anything about this case but WOW! How could he have been paroled when he was obviously a danger to others having previously killed a man for no reason at all? Thanks for another in depth case Emma. Looking forward to Thursday when my daughter and I will be seeing your “Serial Killers Next Door” in Aberdare. Xx
I love following Emma's channel..... It's so addictive!!

I love you so much Em! Lol, your skits crack me up every Wednesday and Sunday!! I often watch from my TV and can't comment, so I pop on my phone too! I doubt Burton will get out in 2033, first he has to live that long. He's partially blind, has a prosthetic leg and more enemies inside than you can shake a stick at

Yay 🙌🏻 it’s Emma time 😊. First to Emma fans and Emma Happy Easter 🐣 from Australia 🇦🇺 and a big thank you ☺️ for all the time you give to your videos enlightening us on interesting videos.
Unfortunately sentencing is a bit laxaday all over the world 🌎. Australia 🇦🇺 has actually got a series Released to Kill”. It’s scary the mistakes our justice system makes and it’s the innocent who suffer.

Happy Easter to you all 😊
This is a case where they should have thrown away the key to his prison door. Im appalled my tax payer dollars were used for a fancy prosthetc leg for this ungrateful individual. Its heart breaking that he got out to kill again. He should never be ket out again and hopefully the preventative detention will ensure this. Someone mentioned you looking at the Antonie Dixon case which would be good. His lawyer ended up marrying him, then got caught smuggling contraban into the prison and was struck off but is now fighting to get herself reinstated to practice again! The Nia Glassie case is a good one to look as as is the case of the Kahui twins who were killed. Our laws for murder are much too soft, theres no accountability for the parole board when they mess up. Probation services are grossly underfunded and undermanned. Prisons are overcrowded and thus we have parole boards under pressure to let people out to help alleviate that. Its an accident waiting to happen and unfortunately we have the Accident Compensation system where victims get a government payment which goes nowhere to recompensing them for their loss. I think if we could sue here people would think more carefully about their decisions and the consequences. Love your show and your beautiful cat. Have a great day.
Love your videos. Would love to hear your view on the billie jo Jenkins case x

I love your content on new Zealand crimes can you please do the one about the doctor who killed her 3 children we never ever heard what ever happened to her???
Wow i have never heard about the rebound effect before! I have GAD ( currently unmedicated and feel better that way) and my doctors have always given me scripts of valium to get me through rough patches and have never been able to tolerate it .I would have it and it was certainly very effective but once it wore off I literally felt homicidal! I felt dangerous around my kids because my anxiety seems to express itself with irritability and impatience. Rebound though? Rage!!. Sure i could have taken another dose but my parents have a history of addiction to prescriptive drugs so was very conscience of this . Thanks for explaining this reaction Emma because a GP never has!
Paul Anderson was my boyfriend, he was the sweetest , kindest fun person. Such a devastating loss for his community of friends and family. 😢

I was on diazipan 30 mil a day and it was prescribed and boy did I feel bad trying to come off it but I ain't killed anyone I ain't been on it now for 20 yrs and I would not have it given
I guess as a psychopath he was very skilled in fooling the parole board with that surface charm and ability to be deeply manipulative.
You should do a calibration with Danielle Kirsty and/or Annie Elise from 10 to Life. They both do amazing work with true crime cases. Annie does incredibly in depth research for every case she reports on

Hi, watching today, didn't get notification yesterday
I live in Wellington and I can see Lower Hutt across the harbour from my house. The justice system in NZ is despicable 😢 especially when it comes to child murderers, our children never get the justice they deserve. Look up Nia Glassie or the Kahui twins along with the countless other babes

I too have a cat called Chase. She is nearly 8 years old,big chonky tabby who dribbles everywhere when I scratch her head.😂
Thank you for covering this case Emma. I was living in the same town that Graeme Burton attacked those people on the fire break in Wainuiomata. I remember when it happened. There is only one access to that town and the road was teeming with Police. No one could even leave the area. I know this is probably not ok to say on UA-cam but at the time I thought the Police should have shot Burton between the eyes and not in the thigh. He truly is a monster and I hope to God he is never released. I also went to high school with Kellie which would have been around the same time that they were together. She is still a friend of mine to this day.
Love the top Emma . ❤
Hi Emma! I was tacking benzodiazipines xanax which has the worst rebound effect.. Since Xanax takes anxiety the fastest of all other benzos ,its half life is short in your system, as soon as you go down off of it your anxiety is worst than before, threrefore you take another one. I did not wean off properly by decreasing the mg lower and lower everyday til you are at a low does preventing withdrawal. Before, I quite at 8 mg habit cold turkey without weaning down
went into convulsions with my entire body shacking non stop and uncontrollably. I had to go to the ER to stop this. Always TAPER down. I had insomnia for monthes and was not able to function..I couldnt hold a cup with the shaking of my hand dropping the cup to the ground. Also visually everything looks dirty and everything looks pee yellow. 😮 Scott V Seattle WA
We are talking about New Zealand's justice system and the people that work within it who continually attempt numerous times to fit a circle into a triangle from the judge to the lawyers to the parole board members.
Hey Emma Happy Easter to yours x 😂🐣🐤🐥
Wow! Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about the justice system in this case seriously WTH??!!
I’m adopted by my step Dad. Emma is perfectly explaining my ex. 😂😂.
His case is often brought up when the debate about arming cops comes up, here in NZ cops don't carry guns as a general rule.
I don't understand what his case has to do with that discussion. The rules here are that police don't keep guns on their person unless they know they're entering an extremely dangerous situation which is what this was. It's an example of the current system working
@@ah-sh9dw The fact he got his hands on their guns is what I have heard raised. I don't think it convinces anyone though.
