- Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:
1. Hi, I'm slowly working on the weekender light. I'm using it to get more comfortable with continental knitting. I have a long cord on it but it takes time to shift the stitches around. In your experience do you prefer to use a short cord just for knitting in the round on the body? I know colorwork has a consequence of too tight of floats if you don't space them out. I could find out myself but if it changes the tension I prefer not to have to tink it back. I appreciate your advise!
2. I am currently knitting the curio socks and am thoroughly enjoying the entire process. As I knit I can’t help but think this pattern would make a gorgeous pullover sweater and I really hope this becomes a pattern someday. I was wondering how you determine which of your patterns you make into multiple designs? for example the traveller series of patterns or the shift patterns. Is it based on your creative inspiration? Physical characteristics of the pattern? Based on popularity of the design or requests people have made? Or does it change based on each pattern?
3. I'm knitting the Stria cardigan and am loving the project, but I'm getting nervous about the final bind-off of the button band. I'm planning to do the tubular BO as that's what I've done for the cuffs and hem, and I find that bind-off to be worth the effort. BUT, I've never kitchener'ed as many stitches as I'll have on the button band. How do you approach an extra-long kitchener routine? Do you really cut your tail about 3 times the length and then thread all that yarn multiple times through every stitch? Or do you work with shorter segments of yarn and weave in ends as needed to keep things more manageable? Thanks for any advice!

4. I am knitting the Traveler cowl using one of my handspun skeins from Hedgehog Fibres in colorway Sweet Pea. I ran out of yarn about two thirds of the way through knitting, as I had only spun one braid which came out to about 200m. Fortunately one of my lovely friends gifted me a skein of her own handspun in the same colorway! So I am able to finish my cowl. This for me wondering: would you recommend buying two braids of the same color at a time? I usually get just one braid of a color and then end up wondering what I can make out of my handspun… How much fiber do you recommend getting for a cowl, a shawl and a sweater spin? Thanks!!
5. I have FINALLY casted on the Shiftigan Cardi. As a longtime knitter, when I choose patterns, I’m always looking for new things to learn. The Shiftigan will be my first steek! Super excited. As every good knitter, while reading the pattern in full, you mention loving to pick up the button band BEFORE the steek. I looked at the link shared in the pattern on this topic and still have a question…what is the benefit of doing this technique vs picking up after the steek? Why do you love doing this? Thank you for such a beautiful pattern chock full of new techniques.
6.Last week you talked about your sewing patterns. Like, you I use Swedish tracing paper, my question is how do you store your A0 printed patterns?

I absolutely love it when you drop bits of singing in.
I hope that you feel better soon. Pamper yourself and thank you for posting today! ❤️🧶
Hope you feel well soon. God bless you for your dedication to sharing your expertise with us even when not feeling up to par. You are an inspiration and a beautiful spirit. ❤
I'm so sorry you're not feeling well, Andrea! I'm sending hugs and well wishes for a speedy recovery. Thanks for caring so much and podcasting - you're amazing!🤩🤩🤩 I just finished the Traveler Cowl and can't wait to wear it!🙂
I love how you’re talking kitchnering a tubular bind-off while I’m doing precisely that on a sleeve cuff. It’s my second sleeve! Just have to finish this, weave in ends, and then I’m done!
In regards to the Curio socks question, I feel like the Metamorphic sweater is the pullover version of this pattern. Both are in my Ravelry library waiting to be knit!
I too love all your glasses. The different frames are to die for. Love them!
I love your cowl that you’re wearing!
Also the yellow-green yarn you held up is such vibrant, joyful colour. I’ve been knitting a green ombré sweater for months and it’s really a joy too.
Thank you for such GREAT learning videos on here. You have a gift for explaining things clearly.
Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. I wsih you feel better real soon ! So nice to knit your Traveler Cowl as I listen to you talk about it. I am using fiber spun by a non knitting friend and yes it is wonderful yet not totally consistent so this is the perfect pattern for that yarn. I can't say the joy I have as the different colors jump on the needles. Pure pleasure !!! Take good care of yourself !!!
Thank you for sharing with us even when you are feeling under the weather. You are a joy to hang out with while I'm knitting or spinning. Take care of yourself and be well.
Thank you so much Andrea for powering through! Another great vlog. I hope you will feel better soon. I hear you girl, my knitting has been keeping me in comfort and company through a tummy bug. It's a great distraction!
Feel better, Andrea. Spinning fascinates me. I am very curious about trying some. Your beautiful work is inspiring. Thank you.
I hope you are feeling better. I just think you are so gifted. You are artistic you are also a fantastic teacher and you are so reflective and deep thinking I love your patterns I’ve only made one the traveler sweater, which I changed the crewneck to a mock turtle, and that stitch has been so beautiful to use and learn with. Thank you for all you do in UA-cam land!
I hope you feel better soon, Andrea. Another great podcast - you wouldn't even know you were feeling under the weather. You are such a delight to watch. I am just finishing my last button band on what will be my first steeked sweater. I picked up the button band before steeking and just love the fact that after I cut it, it will be done (except for the blocking and buttons - and I think I'll add ribbon to the inside of the steek just for the "pretty" factor). I highly recommend picking up the button band before steeking. It really does frame that steek nicely so you can clearly see where to cut. I can't wait - 4 more rows to go!
Hello! I hope you feel better quickly! Would you share the sweatshirt pattern that you sewed? I'm beginning to dabble in sewing and feel like cozy clothes for around the house might be a great starting point. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time!
Hello! I cannot thank you enough for sharing your combination knitting. Game changer! I have been trying to knit my hubby a hat with 2X2 ribbing changing to 6X2 for the body. It looked awful.
You solved it for me, looks wonderful. THANK YOU again SO MUCH! You have taught me a lot through the years. My purls look so much even and finished. I am a English knitter and a flicker(I think that is what is called my style) and this way just flowed so easily. THANK YOU again SO MUCH! And please DON'T STOP!
Just piping in - I love the one needle Kitchener. I always do it with one length of yarn - and I have not measured out enough so have had to join new yarn and weave in ends. Not ideal but it worked.
Lol you made me laugh out loud when you sang the steeking bit, Andrea😂 Feel better fast ❤❤❤
Feel better soon! Thanks for still putting some energy into the podcast.
I'm judging you for how beautiful your spin is! LOL, be well and thank you thank you for your great ideas. You're the best! ❤❤❤
Thank you. You are so cheerful even when you are sick.. I love it. You aways make me laugh . Cheers
you made a comment when talking about spindle spinning.. about how it slowed down the process and you could enjoy it more. I've been thinking a lot about what it looks like to slow down I'm always trying to rush my projects because I'm excited about them and I want to get them done. but I love your excitement about the process. I'm trying to find ways to slow down in life to enjoy life processes more! thank you for sharing your joy!
It’s so interesting that the recommendation for a sweater quant of hand spun yarn is 32 oz!! I’ve always matched what I need to what I’d buy if it was yarn. e.g., fingering wt I need 3 skeins so I buy 10-12 oz of fiber to spin; Dk I need about 5 skeins so about 16 oz. It works for me! ❤
Regarding using the tubular bind off, it is worth the effort. However, I did also learn to do the Italian bind off and is done with all the stitches on one needle. It might be worth looking at that as well. I would imagine it could also be used on the button band as well. Good luck!
I used the Italian bind off for my weekender crew. Brooklyn Tweed has a great tutorial for it. They recommend cutting the yarn 3 times the length you’re binding off.
Wonderful job… can’t believe you aren’t feeling well! Take care of you and get well fast!!!!
So sorry to hear that you are not feeling quite the thing and hope you feel better soon. Just had to say that instead of worrying about getting the exact right cable for my in the round project, like you, I use the magic loop for smaller diameters but for larger items, I use the Traveling Loop method. The bonus to this is that I don't have to use a BOR marker that always falls out and gets lost when I stop knitting at the end of the row.
Tack för ännu ett mysigt avsnitt, jag är gärna med och tävlar ❤️❤️❤️
I am so glad I am not alone. I had to do some plying as I was running out of bobbins!
I've made both versions of the Traveler sweater and I. Am. Obsessed. I'm considering going for the shell next. Or the shawl. Or the cowl. Oh boy. 😅
Feel better soon! I am knitting an Oslow hat while listening today, I’m at a part where you fold over and join to make a double thick brim which is a bit tedious-thanks for keeping me company -❤😊
thank you for another great episode. hope you feel better soon
Love your spins, they are beautiful!! Can’t wait to see what you design. Love your videos.
You are such a trooper! Thank you for this! Feel better soon. ♥
Thank you 🧶😊
When doing a tubular bind off on a large area, I do it in smaller increments and not in one sitting. I end my sessions at the end of a repeat so when I come back to working on it, I know exactly where I am.
The person who said they're enjoying the Curio Socks should check out Metamorphic! The stitch pattern is very similar to the inside out version of Curio. Seems like it might be possible to modify the slip stitches in the DRK Everyday Cowl for a similar effect in garter, too.
Best podcast song ever! 😄Feel better soon!
A non-knitting question. You always have the most amazing glasses! Can you share the brand of the frames you are wearing in this episode? Thanks and i hope you feel better soon!
PS sounds like you are getting a cold, take very good care of yourself. We are older and still wear our masks in stores, ect. 3 years is wonderful not getting horrible colds!
Feel better soon!
#question: Why do gauge swatches lie? I've just had to restart a 2nd project because my gauge swatch was not accurate. In the most recent case, my swatch was spot on (12 st/4 inch), so I confidently cast on. After working several rows, I could tell that something was off. Sure enough, I checked my gauge, and it was 10 st stitches/4 inches. My gauge swatches are at least 6 inches wide and long, and I do stitch counts at a few different places. I usually do block my swatches, but I didn't this time. I used the same needles for both swatch and project. Now 'm not sure how to proceed with my project - just try again on smaller needles? Thanks so much for any insight!
Regarding the sewn tubular bind-off, I'm fearless since binding off my Birch pullover :-) That was 280 stitches on size 2 needles. I searched the project page on Ravelry to see what other knitters had done, hoping to find a good alternative, and decided the tubular looked the best (trust the designer 🙂). So yeah, it's a little fiddly, but this bind-off is always worth the effort.
I like the idea of tubular bind off in a button band.
My favourite and easiest way to do tubular bind off is from Sascha knits, here on UA-cam ,”Italian bind off”, he separates the stitches onto dons, I have two needles for this , one is white, for the purl stitches, then a grey one for knits, then you just need needle stoppers, so I just do a long dpns worth at a time, it is so much neater, and easier to manage, in my opinion.😊
Get well soon Andrea! ❤
Laughed about the crinkly bags.. I am poolside in FL and I kept thinking the maintenance crew was picking up stuff behind me! 😂. Feel better
I would love to see a Traveler hat pattern!
Sidenote - but your glasses are always incredible! I hope you start to feel better soon, lovely human.
Please tell us about all of the cool eyeglasses you wear!
And here I was hoping you had a solution to the giant long sea of yarn with the long Kitchener. 😂
Love your glasses! Feel better ❤
On the topic of tubular bind off methods, I have two favorite methods, which produce bind offs that are jogless -- no jog! It's really cool. Here's the method for 1x1 ribbing: ua-cam.com/video/SBrGhv1_RBU/v-deo.html
And here's the one for 2x2 ribbing: ua-cam.com/video/mvqp8R02RQA/v-deo.html
Hello from southern New England! It's not knitting related, but I just wanted to say how much I love your glasses! They're always so interesting and they fit you so well. Do you have a local optical shop that you frequent up in Portland? When I'm not knitting or spinning, I'm an optician by day and always love to check out cool new spots when traveling :)
So since Tubular bind off is esentially kitchener stitch if you divide those stitches on two knitting needles (what you like to skip Andrea) my prefered way is to knit Tubular Bind Off - No sewing needle required - a third knitting needle instead.

It's an old Video but I haven't seen any more modern Version of this and it works best for me (at least better than sewing since I can never seam to get the tention right)
I agree that the curio socks stitch pattern could be decline in a cowl or pullover or vest :-)
At this point I have watched "I'll Knit if I Want To" for years and I love it. I keep thinking about you wearing the earbuds in the videos and you have talked about them giving the video a better sound but... I am pretty sure they are not and have never, recorded the sound. In this episode, it is very clear that they are not recording when you walk away to find your pattern cutouts. The volume of your (pretty) singing is getting lower when you walk away and if it was the earbuds recording that would not be the case.
plus, in every episode were you mess with your hair or the buds the sound is never disturbed.
I am not trying to be rude and I am sorry if it comes off that way. I just thought it might be nice to know that you don't have to wear them every time since the sound would be the same without the earbuds. Love from Sofie
Hope you are recovering well. With regard to the tubular bind off, I found a similar one that isn’t long tail or sewn. It’s called “Hiya Hiya Grandma’s stretchy bind off” and it looks very similar to tubular when it’s finished. There are lots of tutorials for it online. 😊
Feel better, Andrea! Just as a side note 32 inches would be 81 centimeters, and 81 meters would be 88 yards. 😂 but it was very nice to see you sing about it 😅😊
I am a sing-talker as well. sometimes it gets weird. can't be helped.
