► What is this startup series?
2 best friends living in New York, @FryingPan , a software engineer who worked at multiple big tech companies, and @nang88 , a software engineer who worked at a top high frequency trading firm, who just recently quit to do startups, join together in search of the highest leverage use of their time in order to create positive impact in this world. Our current idea? Pear.AI, an open-source AI powered code editor. Join us on our mission, either as a user or contributor, to empower people to build out their ideas by reducing the time from ideation to conception: trypear.ai (See latest video for any changes).
► Who am I?
My name is Pan, I recently quit my half a million dollar a year job in California and moved to New York. I still work as an engineer, but my job is much more flexible now so I have time to pursue my childhood passion for creating content. I'm originally from Montreal, Canada, I'm 6'5 and speak French, Mandarin and English fluently. I've lived in many places and have done arts, social sciences and also hard sciences. I aim to inspire, entertain and educate by sharing my experiences and stories through the means of uploading my consciousness to the internet. Welcome to my channel.

NOBODY SIGNED UP LMAOOOOOOO should we pivot?
*also mb I posted the version without subtitles 🤦♂
D:
yo, you're pivoting way too fast, try with at least 3 customers (friends&family maybe)
Push some more, don't give up yet
I think the problem is a great problem! Couple points, you aren’t reaching any key decision makers. Don’t bother pitching to employees, simply act important and ask for the manager. And your pitch should be less about the solution (influencers) and more about “we know a secret way of bringing more customers through your door that is cheaper and 10x more effective than the alternatives” (whatever they are)
Try again, it’s only your first day!
'i think it went pretty well' jk ily pan
yo pan...remember when you become a millionaire from this startup....that i was here

Damn, I can't speak Korean so I can't watch this video 😔
this is sick. love to see the process documented. I'm hella into startups too so its nice to see this type of content online.

Here's an idea for you: Put on a suit and make yourself look like a professional. Talk as if you own 10 companies. Always try to speak first with the manager, or if it's a staff member receiving you, talk to them as if you are from the FBI. This is a strategy or approach for someone to appear professional and authoritative in a business or professional setting. It advises dressing in a professional manner, adopting a confident demeanor, and speaking assertively, as if one were a successful business owner or a person of authority. Additionally, it recommends prioritizing communication with managers and employing a confident attitude, even when interacting with staff members. The reference to "talk to them like you are from the FBI" implies speaking with authority and assertiveness, as if conducting an official investigation or interrogation. Overall, the statement suggests a method for portraying oneself as a credible and influential figure in a professional environment. Your Welcome...
Nailed it, that’s exactly what should happen
Wishing y’all the best and much success!!!
Quality WENT UPPP AGAIN! Nice vid and editing
Your channel is going to take off Pan! I like how you're documenting your startup journey!
Even though rejectment is discouraging, i think it was great to go to the field directly and chat with the business owners as you did.🔥 That way you have a better knowledge of your clients and more engagement from them to your project. All my respect for you, Pan! Keep it up 🔥
The idea is so good wish you all the best guys and l want to see you geting successed and this become a big thing in the future❤
Loving this series keep it up 👍🏽
Me too! Good luck!!!!!! (Idk about pivoting, seems like there’s potential and you need more volume / as others have said better sales pitch! But 3 very interested is so high!!!!!!!! Way better than 0 and /or negative interest/strong disliking!!!!!)
great content man!
Remember me dude i'm your fan since 2021 so yeah it's so good to see you you become one of inspiration in computer science
the idea is great, don't give up yet, u can also try cold calling local places
W day W video
W all around 📈
"Amateur hour" is exactly what I was thinking. Glad you recognized it.
I love this kind of content im also a SWE in the city working on my own startup while holding a full time job in engineering
Hey Pan, one thing that might make this process faster is just phone call local businesses and ask if you could speak to the manager. I talked to about 20 businesses to try and get a coupon partnership going and about 4 of them let me talk to the manager and became interested. It might be faster than physically going to each destination. But the success rate might depend on the type of business and location you're in. Maybe give it a go and see what results in higher success.
Jo Pan, I normally never comment, but your videos resonate wonderfully with my life. I recently quit my permanent job to start my own social media agency in the Netherlands. Many small and medium-sized businesses (€0.5 to €2.5 mil revenue yearly) here find the fees of larger agencies too steep, the salespeople behind them too impersonal, or simply don't have the time for it and therefore miss out on the opportunities of social media. I'm jumping on this with quality social media maintenance at one of the lowest prices in the market combined with a hyper-personal approach throughout the entire customer journey. In the past weeks, I've acquired my first small clients. Your videos give me a lot of motivation and I continue to follow your entrepreneurial journey with great pleasure.
The idea is amazing , just gonna find a way to sell it to businesses
Keep Going On🎉
Good job doing this bros
"business card store closed"... immediately goes to staples... a store where you can order business cards and have them printed same day.
Damn, should've known
Oo I like this concept of journey
Yoo pan. We need the next chapter.
Bros is definitely gonna be a multimillionaire in a few years
Might be a good idea to take some samples of what influencer marketing might look like for their specific business and leave it with them too. Also pretending you're from the IRS to get the owner's deets is possible haha.
There are alot of Tools Like That such As Influencity and many more
this is so legit...
The rule of 10s, for every 100 people you talk to, 10 will be interested, and 1 will bite.
I have lots of experience with getting local restaurants to sign up with my marketing agency. I know the services are slightly different but if you’d like I’d be down to hop on call with you guys and share some things that I’ve learned.
i feel like you guys should also try to talk to those marketing agencies directly, they certainly know much more about influencer marketing than shop owner and have much more incentivizes to invest in tools like that.
Never subbed to a channel so fast. W video W day baybeeee
Remind my guy to change phone’s password. Just in case
See Pan, you gotta target the less famous restaurants and businesses but have good potential . Going to fine dining ones or the one's which already are famous will have less chance of acceptance since they already have a good number of customer's coming in.
8:27 Captions: "You must be afraid of rejection"
I think Pan forgot to say "You *mustn't* be afraid of rejection" in the captions
are you applying to YC summer batch?
idk anything about business but i wouldve for sure tried calling other companies that i couldnt get to in the day and see if a phone conversation could lead into an email with a manager etc and then maybe a zoom call
i imagine for this stuff maximising your 'luck' surface area is critical in the early stages to get the ball rolling, i don't think youve failed enough yet to pivot imo
Great content. This is at my top 5 favorite channels.
Btw nang face is so funny. 🤣
idk if hes gonna take that as a compliment 🤣
What are the other 4 ?
@@martinc431 Haha, Idk why but it looks so funny for me, no hate. 😅
@@avishgumber Most of them are spanish channels: Hrom, date un vlog, I did a thing, nekodificador, vicesat.
so you connect local bussinesses to influencers but cant the local businesses already connect to the influencers directly i mean there arent many influencers making conent based on a particular city can you explain your idea to me more
Yo pan, where do i submit my resume ! I'll relocate or work remote Im in Texas.
why not make a start up playlist for Swe!
banger
pan looks like sung jinwoo from solo leveling ngl
Literally same career path. are you me??
Bro actually used the title 😂😂
😂 only those in the livestream knows..
I think the big issue with how you approach it right now is how you speak about it to the businesses. like you said, u dont need to give them any technical ideas or even talk about "influencer marketing". u can just describe it as advertising services which utilize social media. find or bs metrics about how much it drives sales.
overall good luck with this, i def see it working out, i just think the approach for getting customers needs some work rn
you just showed everyone his password 😂😂 hope he changed it
Hopefully you guys track the number of QR code scans/landing page visits. That way you have some metrics to go off of in the event they don't sign up. I'm sure you guys are good enough engineers, but try to look more business-formal/professional when approaching some restaurants or businesses in general. Physical appearance can play a big part
Good idea!
@@PansDay other than that, keep up the good work and grind!
you will do gpod brother,,, all the best for next approach,,
I can’t believe y’all didn’t ask chat gpt for a promotion pitch😢
This idea seems amazing, but how about targetting smaller and local businesses, it better for the community and there's loads of cool small places
Everyone knows what YT is, you guys should introduce yourself as youtubers, flex those sub numbers, and let them know that you are trying to help connect local business with other influencers like yourself to generate their business more revenue.
I can be your growth hacker 🙋♂️
bro pan the qr idea is a lil lame cause it can get easily lost and stuff .
though love your content been watching you since lockdown
You guys are learning how hard it is to grow a user base. You will need to raise a lot of money to spend on marketing. Running around NYC and maybe getting 3 signups a week is not worth the time
Instead of going door to door, it might be better to focus more on digital marketing and also speaking to VCs in your area :D
Try to get in business owner circles, get around the actual business owners and make your pitch.
The real question is.. are you hiring? ☺
We're broke
Focus on creating detailed flyers with QR codes. Over-explain rather than opt for minimalist designs at this early stage.
Have you guys thought of marketing online like Facebook and TikTok? Seems obvious, I know.
y'all need to find someone more charismatic to do your customer acquisition so y'all can focus on the tech
Chinese Elon musk
Oi Pan, how old are you though?
I think youre suppose to target business owners not their employees 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I don't think that this is a good idea. I think you're better off doing SWE & UA-cam.
If the startup takes off, you won't have time for anything else.
Doesn't seem like It's worth it.
That said, go right ahead lol. Who the fuck am I to stop you
i love u
