    My name is Xanthe Wyse.
This is a difficult and triggering topic but I think it needs addressing. I don't think advocacy will ever be over. I have severe disabilities of a mental injury and mood disorder from trauma. These come with significant psychological distress. I am not 'cured' despite treatment.
Responding to the news that Dutch woman Zoraya ter Beek has died by euthanasia. Incidently, one of my parents was born in the Netherlands. I don't agree with how comfortable some countries like the Netherlands have become so comfortable with assisted dying, broading to include mental illness. Yes, there can be significant distress with mental illness and trauma.
According to media reports and interviews, Beek was approved assisted dying on the grounds of psychological suffering. Euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002.
Psychiatric cases are now being approved for people with mood disorders, personality disorders etc. Oftentimes, women with histories of trauma.
Euthanasia is a complicated topic but I think it is sad that it is seen as hopeless when one has disabilities from mental illness and trauma.
At times, I have felt like a burden. I have severe disabilities from a mental injury and mood disorder. Clinicians have told me the impairment I have won't improve. It was far worse. It's an adjustment and I need support services to survive.
I would have been a candidate for euthanasia. It takes courage to keep going. I have some degree of quality of life now, just making the best of a difficult situation.
I wove some of my experiences into my novel: "Pet Purpose: Your Unspoken Voice."
