I was reminded about this when I saw the transcriptions of the spoof Heinz Baked Beans ads on the Goodies fan website, as there's one beginning 'I like meat, and I like greens...'
This Is a song my father always used to play on his record player when growing up, we were poor when I was young and we couldn’t afford many vinyls / tapes or CDs. One of my earliest memories was sitting on the landing at the top of the stairs when I was supposed to be asleep listening to this record playing downstairs in the living room. It’s a memory I’ll cherish forever. I always make sure to listen to it once in a while, I always shed a few tears thinking about what once was, and to remember to take life as it comes, and to enjoy myself. Thank you Mike Oldfield
This song has special memories for me too I was 18 in 1975 when it first came out I am 65 now it had a very Christmassy wintry sound I think it was then around that time when it came out and The Listener sponsored radio station would play it so I made it a Christmas special song so now whenever I can I still play it at Christmas time. This Christmas I do not have my own place to live I'm basically homeless and I'm living with a woman all I have is my tiny phone and can only play it through the phone I used to play it on a big stereo and turn it up loud and dance to it on my tippy toes. I hope someday I get to have a big stereo and my own home again where I can celebrate these kind of songs and music.
I listened to Mike Oldfield as a young girl in the 70s tubular bells stopped me being scared of thunderstorms! But this song was my favourite, roll forward nearly 50 years and on one sleepless night in February i listen to tubular bells again and i get to thinking about that beautiful song on horseback. Once found i played it a couple of times... tears rolling down my face because it brought back so many happy memories but the main one was of my gorgeous Vic, he was a big brown beastie with a big brown face... sadly lost March 2023 at the grand age of 36, will never forget him or this song. Thank you Mr Oldfield for giving me the best teenage years and a song to remember my Victor xx
I'm 75 and still moved by the heart in this song after something like 50 years. A musical masterpiece. If anyone attends my funeral, I hope this will be played as my parting share.
Oh my - so many memories... I was born in 1978, and Mike Oldfield was my dad's favourite artist, he played Ommadawn a lot when I was a little girl... In 1983, when I was 5, my baby brother was born, and I used to sing this song to him - as he got a bit older he also grew to love it; in fact, he absolutely adored it! Unfortunately, my brother had a lot of health problems and sadly in 1992 he died of Reye's Syndrome at age 9 (I was 14) - far too young for such a lovely, kind, sweet-natured little boy... This song was played at his funeral, and as a result I found it very hard to listen to it for years... I'm now 44, and still miss him terribly... However, with the 30th anniversary of his passing imminent, I found real happiness in hearing this song again and remembering the times when he was still with us... Such a beautiful, pure song!
Unfortunately, many of us have lost loved ones. Some, well before their time. In my case, none of them can be connected to this song. But I am. This song speaks volumes to me and reinforces my grounding in mother earth. My father was a man of the earth, and so am I. I hope we all survive the coming technology revolution. This is going to be a real biggie!
Such a pure and moving song, it makes cry almost everytime I hear it. Mike was going through a lot when he recorded Ommadawn, his alcoholic mother died and he had suffered for years from anxiety and panic attacks. The album's intricate and restless pieces reflect Mike's agitated mind through that time, and yet at the end of it you reach this peaceful gem, which expresses nothing more than the desire of serenity you find in the simple things. Thank you Mike Oldfield.
The selections listed on Mike Oldfield’s albums, featured “Tubular Bells (part one and two) on his “Tubular Bells” album. “Hergest Ridge” also featured only a part one and a part two. “Ommadawn” listed only a part one and a part two on the listing. So when the final notes of “Ommadawn” (part two) started to fade, I got up to change the record and was caught by surprise by this wonderful melody.
When my little daughter was only quite few months old (now she is almost 9) I always played this song for her on my CD device, while going to bed.. Those were one of her first smiles i could see in her lovely face. I will love this song forever.

Perhaps the Mike's first song composed and performed by himself, some old-fashioned and bucolic but very pleasant to hear. Mike maybe needed to escape from some kind of inner pain by singing this song. Placid and peaceful tune to calm oneself. Oldfield for ever.
This appear to be a new remixed version featuring a much clearer Oldfield’s voice than on the older ones. Also more echo during the chorus. Also an added “Think of it” at the end, if I’m not mistaken
I hate so much the deluxe versions. The songs were great back in the day, why ruining all the nostalgia by adding new vocals, new instrumentation and horrible mix. Mike Oldfield lost his way on these ones like George Lucas for star wars ... or maybe that's an argument to sell new records. anyway I'll stick to my vinyl records from the past.
@@TheDinosaur08 I couldn't agree more. I bought a copy of Tubular Bells recently [one of seemingly dozens around - and NON better than the original] and I couldn't listen to it. It went straight into the garden for bird scaring.

This song is awesome and science fiction sounding
beautiful ...ProgressivePsychedelicElectronicEnglishFolk
...does that cover it?
This appear to be a new remixed version featuring a much clearer Oldfield’s voice than on the older ones. Also more echo during the chorus. Also an added “Think of it” at the end, if I’m not mistaken
It must have been taken from 2010 remastered version.
I like the vocals here better, but I feel like half of the instrumentation was pushed too far back in the mix losing some of its majestic quality.
@@pleatedskirt18 That is, you use tubular bells to scare birds away, or the CD? (Lol)
Very Nice ,..
"I like beer, and I like cheese" & so do I Mike, perhaps too much.
Impresionante.
Sublime
exquisite
I like beer and I like cheese
I like the smell of a Westerly breeze
But I like more than all of these
To be on horseback
Hey and away we go
Through the grass, cross the snow
Big brown beastie
Big brown face
I'd rather be with you
Than flying through space
I like thunder and I like rain
And open fires with roaring flames
But if the thunder is in my brain
I'd like to be on horseback
Some like the city some the noise
Some make chaos and others toys
But if I was to have the choice
I'd rather be on horseback
Hey and away we go
Through the grass, cross the snow
Big brown beastie
Big brown face
I'd rather be with you
Than flying through space
Some find it strange to be here
On this small planet with who knows where
But when it's strange and full of fear
It's nice to be on horseback
Some are short and others tall
Some hit there heads against the wall
But it doesn't really matter at all
When you happen to be on horseback
Hey and away we go
Through the grass, cross the snow
Big brown beastie
Big brown face
I'd rather be with you
Than flying through space
So if you feel a little glum
To Hergest Ridge you should come
In summer, winter, rain or sun
It's good to be on horseback
Hey and away we go
Through the grass, cross the snow
Big brown beastie
Big brown face
I'd rather be with you
Than flying through space
Hey and away we go
Through the grass, cross the snow
Big brown beastie
Big brown face
I'd rather be with you
Than flying through space
You know, I'd rather be on horseback
"... On this small planet with who knows where" i think "with" is wrong"! I always here instead "and"!
And i also think it´s in the refrain "...than flying TO space" and not "...through..." !
And i also think it must be "to space" instead of "through space" !
Did you ever hear cover “pohadka” by plihal?
I have always liked this song..in spite of the fact that always reminds me a little of rod jane and freddy ...

The kids in the chorus sound like they're having so much fun :-)
Pity they can't sing in tune! There are proper childrens choirs that could have done it a lot better.
@@Phiyedough he got the kids from his town to sing it... I think that's much nicer

It surely influenced Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall".

The Tina Belcher song!
(Except maybe the first two lines would be: "I like burgers, and I like cheese/ And I like the impudent swagger of zombies...")

Now I know his voice. A bit like Ian Anderson

GronkMusic thanks for the opinion now fuck off 👍🏻
@@shanedeboss send him back to sinatra
@@filipemendes2295I like 'em both. As Mike Oldfield himself says (paraphrasing) it's all music.
What 3 albums did you produce by the time you were 22?
@@123discgolf Gronk might have railed lines off three separate CD covers by 22, maybe.
Quindi chi canta su ON HORSEBACK e recita è MIKE OLDFIELD??? Giuro pensavo fosse JAN ANDERSON!!!!!!
