    You’ve got to remember the reason Herring was happy for Williams winning in this bout, was they were actually good friends outside of the ring. They both were Texans and they sparred with one another quite regularly. So good sportsmanship demonstrated here.

    Wow, he was really giving Liston all he wanted. And this was Liston in his prime. Williams was a shell of himself after he got shot.

      garrison 68 Agreed. He retired after the Ali fight in 66. It’s sad to see all the comments about how brilliant Ali was on that fight. These idiots don’t seem to realize he was fighting Williams’ ghost. He was probably the second best Heavyweight in the world after Liston in 1959 - 1963

      Ancalagon The Black Yeah. For about a round and a half! Donny was not that tall - about six feet - but man could he punch! Imagine he would have become champ in 1956 if he hadn’t gone back to jail. He wiped the mat with Floyd Patterson - twice! But he gave up his title sitting his stool to the young man from Louisville - a disgrace - and then he laid down in round one in their rematch. Alfred that, he had lost his reputation for good. But one of the greatest ever, no doubt about it.

    With my 6.9 and my 175, I can but take a low bow to this giant of a man from another generation who could step back in a ring after a . 357 gunshot, damaged intestine and hip and a dead kidney and still endanger his opponents. Great respect!

    I know Sonny Liston won both of their fights but I saw those left hooks of Williams MOVING Liston. If someone offered Liston a Goody's headache powder after those 2 fights I imagine he took them with thanks.

    The Todd Herring fight was after he was shot and prior to his fight with Ali. So no, he was not in his prime and far from it, but still a great puncher.

      +uncjim You are correct. As I recall, after being shot, Cleveland Williams lost over 50 lbs, and he was not fat. He was not physically the same after being severely wounded by gunshot.

    You can see why most sports writers couldn't see how Clay/Ali could hurt Sonny. Williams gave Sonny plenty of heavy shots for two and a half rounds and Sonny took them all seemingly without effect.

      That’s why it was all a farce and a fake. To why Bud Adams handed a notice garnishing Williams winnings for the title fight on Nov 14 1966 against Ali. The boxing fraternity did everything they could to ensure Ali beat that version of The Big Cat. Because if Williams outclassed the Heavyweight Champion and the prime Williams couldn’t beat Liston. Then what does that say about Ali win against Liston. Yes it would just demonstrate the lie that was orchestrated all along. Williams was shot because his manager Hugh Benbow told him to live it clean for week leading up to his title fight against Ernie Terrell in 1964 for WBA title, that was stripped from Muhammad Ali. Off course Bud Adams would’ve said go for a party this weekend shouldn’t be any trouble. But The Police happens to be there, yeah right. They were paid off by Bud Adams to do the job they were supposed to do. Because Cleveland Williams in early to mid 60’s was seen to be the only one to destroy Ali. Ali avoided him all he could during his non championship years. To ensure Williams was not a contender shoot him and it didn’t happen.

    • @syourke3
      @syourke3 4 роки тому

      Bashir Hayek You’re theory is ridiculous. Williams at his best couldn’t have beaten Ali in his prime. Not even a kernite chance. Liston destroyed Williams twice in 59 and even Liston couldn’t come close to beating Ali. Ali was way too quick for either of those great heavyweights. And they were both great!

    • @syourke3
      @syourke3 4 роки тому

      Bashir Hayek Norton and Frazier had styles that made it tough for Ali. Foreman did not. I think Liston and Williams has similar fighting styles. In fact, Willians seems even slower than Liston. Very powerful but slow - I can’t imagine him getting to Ali.

      Don't listen to Ali LOVERS. They hate accepting facts. Just keep reminding them of the Larry Holmes demolishing of Ali and they will use the same excuses Cleveland Williams encountered when he fought Ali in 1966. So its mere hypocrisy. Only reason they love ALI so much is because of the fame he so called achieved. Otherwise they don't want to accept the truth. Cleveland Williams was shot with a 357 magnum. That even was done because Williams would not be bought as Ali previous opponents. So they did everything to avoid an ALI v WILLIAMS non-title or title fight prior to 1966. They waited until he was half the man he was for him to even be given the chance to fight for the title. But they forget, Williams sheer determination and will tells you he was some fighter to enter the ring.
