I got a good old Marantz 140 power amp with a 3200 pre-amp that I bought back in 1977. It got a solid 75 wrms per channel that drives custom speakers. It still works well and I’m enjoying it a lot, but now, seeing this Anthem system makes me go crazy 😍. Thanks a lot for the videos!
Joey is a great dude. He's always been there for us as a dealer in SWFL. Glad to see him make an appearance with this gear. I just sold an STR Integrated to a good client and it sounds killer in a really challenging room.. 👌
The ARC in the Anthem is game changer. I have the integrated, and once you use ARC, there's no going back. It was a major reason I narrowed my choice down to the STR when I was looking for a higher end integrated in the $ range. Without ARC, it would compete easily with other units in the $ range, it's leaves all others behind with the ARC. Finally, considering all the gear Gene gets to test, that the STR series is what ended up in his personal system, should tell people all they need to know. My review of the integrated: ua-cam.com/video/hUCf1cfF1rs/v-deo.html
Hi Gene, Can you do a full review of the Anthem STR Integrated. Also a comparison of the AVM 70 and 90 to the Integrated as far as sound Quality for music. Their are no Anthem dealers where I can compare these products and I'm on Long Island N.Y. AUDIO ADVICE WAS CLOSED, DURING THE AUDIO SHOW IN N.C. when I was there. the STR did sound amazing with the MartainLogan XTF200. Thank you so much for all your Great work over the Years! Cheers!
I have been getting back into 2 channel. However, rather than a dedicated stereo preamp, I picked up a used Anthem Statement D2v for shared 2 channel and theater duty. It will be controlling an Anthem PVA 7 Amp which is powering my all JTR 7.1 system in a dedicated room with the JTR Noesis 228HTs and Captivator S2 behind an acoustically transparent screen. I can’t wait to get it and run ARC when it arrives to see if there is a difference from the Audyssey on my Onkyo PR-SC885. I went back and forth on getting an AVM 60 or D2v, but since I am not planning on adding more speakers or moving to 4K anytime soon and in theory the D2v should sound at least as good for 2 channel as the AVM 60 and potentially better for less than half the price. Thank you for this video as it helped drive my decision to get a preamp that should sound as good or better for music without extra features that I wouldn’t be able to take advantage of without making big changes to my room.
These 2 would pair up nicely to my PSB speakers... I would like to wait until some things are ironed out a bit, although I'm sure the preamp would pair nice with a Marantz or Emotiva power amp, as the amp would pair nice with any decent 2 channel pre amp putting out 2 volts or more RMS. I have 2 red dragon audio S500 stereo power amplifiers in btl bridged mono mode with PSB speakers for music. Marantz and Emotiva gear powering the home theater with 13 SVS speakers.
Great with cutting edge 2 channel stuff, awesome products :-) I am running two channel only, using squeezebox touch, benchmark dac1, krell kav400xi to Duntech PCL-15 or Meadowlark Kestrel 2 speakers. Vinyl coming back in now with an Ariston RD40 player to a Primare r20 riaa. The Anthem pre could fit really well in here.
After contemplating what the separate pre-amp and power-amp can do versus the integrated Amp, the price becomes a factor. But, damn, that dual-monoblock design is just a thermonuclear bunker-buster against my budget. Can I spend $10K for this? Not really, but do I want to? Absolutely.
Dont get me wrong, love the video and love the gear but my budget would never allow for it. I picked up a vintage 70's Harman Kardon 330b Stereo Receiver ($70) that ive enjoyed cleaning up and paired it with some book shelf speakers. Im enjoying reconnecting with music but slowly building a more budget system through the classified section. Great video and equipment
Hi Gene. Great video as always. I have a question about the SE Line Out jacks. When you are using HT bypass will the STR still provide a fixed line level output for recording or to use a headphone amp while watching movies?
My amp is moon 250 I with paradigm speakers , bluesound node 2 streamer and clearaudio concept tt and phono amp clearaudio basic plus and sub is sunfire dsd 10 that is my 2 ch system and my home theatre is oppo 205 player with Emotiva 5 ch amp and preamp umc 200 Emotiva and klipch speakers with bookshelve the snell j 7
Gene great video. I have an Onkyo tx-sr705 that I would like to upgrade but av manufactures have done away with tape in and out connections, I have an Onkyo integra 909 cassette deck and tascam reel to reel that I want to continue using. Im doing 5.1 all NHT speakers with the 2.3a’s for the fronts. The rest Oppo 203, Pro-Ject debut Carbon with every upgrade, arcam irdac and bungie tube phono stage. I’m unsure if a power amp for my av receiver or a stereo receiver with theater pass through would be the better decision. Any suggestions?
I remember gene talking about the marantz xlr & rca output voltage, can the marantz pre pros really put out 5 volts?.because it only says 2.5volts, out of the xlr in the specs?.
Gene I want ask you just one thing This is not a criticism I hope you don’t take it this way about anthem but I have products and I noticed that they use circuit boards in their preamp’s from years back and I also noticed that the new STR amplifier uses basically the same board configuration and power configuration That some of their older model use. Why do they do that and call it new? Anthem sounds nice. But so does my Class’e preamp, amp which is more tube like where Anthem is more in your face sound. Where is your Buddy Hugo what is he doing out lifting trucks?
Hi Gene, I'm really keen to hear your opinion on ARC once you're all tweaked up. Currently I use an Emotive XMC-1 for both 2 channel and multi channel. Really like Dirac and other features such as configurable triggers based on source signal, so am reluctant to jump ship. However, feeling a bit jaded by the whole 'upgrade' experience with the HDMI upgrade only just being released, Atmos still not here and it's now end-of-line. So I am interested in Anthem as a replacement, provided ARC can stand up next to Dirac??... Love your work, keep it up👍👍
Still using the emotiva umc 1 and xpa 2 svs ultra towers with an axiom ep500. Mainly listen to spotify now days, the project carbon gets a spin now and then.
Hey have a question when calibrating speakers what determines if they are small or large. My set up are B&W Nautilus 603 for all height, Backs & surr my Mains are B&W 803 center B&W HTM2
Yamaha AS series are great products Integrated amplifiers. We've reviewed the lower AS-801 and liked it a lot. The new CX-A5200/MX5200 separates are on our schedule to review this December.
Love the two channel emphasis that’s flourishing right now for music listening. I have emotiva xpa-2 and xsp-1 both gen 2. With a Sonica DAC, has given tons of flexibility for music sources. Next is time to upgrade speakers from NHT classic 4 towers. Any suggestions? Looking real hard at the Klipisch forte iii.
Can the power meters be customized so that I can actually see what peaks I'm hitting? In the video it's divided into 0.6, 6, 60, 600W and so I would have no idea if I'm hitting 100 or 200W for example. How accurate are power meters btw? Also, does the integrated have this power meter also?
Sure you can. I chose this route since ny turntable is in a different rack and I didnt want to extend the cable and also so I can review other gear without interfering with my theater system.
Hi Gene, I have a similar setup than the one you are showing, where you put the anthem in charge of handing pre-amplification/ amplification for 2 channel stereo music. I have a Yamaha 5100 for home theater and a separate 2 ways amp for stereo listening and two 7 channels class D amplifier for Home Theater. I was wondering, since you had the chance to try them side by side, whether the use of a dedicated preamp really made a difference over using the 5100 as a preamp? all a preamp needs to do for stereo listening is input switching and volume control, and the price i for such function, for a "stereophile preamp" is normally between 4k-15K. The question is: Is it worth it spending such sum on a preamplifier or is the sound quality difference over a well built, albeit consumer product, yamaha 5100, negligible?
The Anthem STR has 3 big advantages, superior phono preamp, ARC room correction, superior ADC if you use analog sources with bass management and processing. If you don't need any of those features, the 5100 will serve fine as a preamp.

But $4K?Yeah tech sounds good (re Kef LS50) but $4K is a lot of dough
That's one tall audio rack but I'm here into this video like I could really afford this as a college student 😂

Great Anthem gear, i wish you could make a video with those STR playing some GOOD music!
Good to see a phono section on the pre-amp
looks like a real monster id love to have one !
Nice one...need video on how to use Audyssey MultEQ app guide
It's in the works via the Marantz SR8012 next month.
waiting eagerly

Love your video's. Please up your camera game.
how close do you think this comes to the PS Audio BHK pre & BHK amp, sonically?
so we don"t need the anthem pre amp in home theatre just the anthem power amp.
After contemplating what the separate pre-amp and power-amp can do versus the integrated Amp, the price becomes a factor. But, damn, that dual-monoblock design is just a thermonuclear bunker-buster against my budget. Can I spend $10K for this? Not really, but do I want to? Absolutely.

I forgot to post. Digital sources only. I don’t have the time to devote to getting into vinyl.
I want I WANT!!!!
Hi Gene. Great video as always. I have a question about the SE Line Out jacks. When you are using HT bypass will the STR still provide a fixed line level output for recording or to use a headphone amp while watching movies?
How you connect your Yamaha to the STR Preamplifier, what input and output you use because in the manual had no diagram.
What's your opinion on dipoles? (Take Magnepan as an example)

How would the anthem pre amp do with a non anthem power amp? Eg: McIntosh?
Just fine. It has plenty of clean output drive to mate with any power amp.
I remember gene talking about the marantz xlr & rca output voltage, can the marantz pre pros really put out 5 volts?.because it only says 2.5volts, out of the xlr in the specs?.

hey Gene, can you give us some first impressions of the Yamaha AS1100/2100/3000 or the new M5000 separates?
Yamaha AS series are great products Integrated amplifiers. We've reviewed the lower AS-801 and liked it a lot. The new CX-A5200/MX5200 separates are on our schedule to review this December.
what about the M5000 and C5000 hifi separates? how about the higher end AS series ?
Hello gene, what would you say is a better speaker match, with a ati signature Amp. The rsl speakers or the tektons?
Love the two channel emphasis that’s flourishing right now for music listening. I have emotiva xpa-2 and xsp-1 both gen 2. With a Sonica DAC, has given tons of flexibility for music sources. Sure you can. I chose this route since ny turntable is in a different rack and I didnt want to extend the cable and also so I can review other gear without interfering with my theater system.
thanks Gene

It bugs me that the Anthem room correction software is compatible only with PC computers and not Apple iPads or Macs
Pretty sure they said it will work on iPhone so that means iPad as well.
2 channel vinyl
The amp has no earthing??
It looks like a toy. Very simple and inexpensive looking interior structure. Professional audiophile is far from being the option.
