    ★ BACKGROUND NOTES ★
    Hope can be considered the brighter, more cheerful relative of my other 4.3 octave marimba solo Moon, which had a darker tone amongst the backdrop of the mythical tale of Chang'e and Houyi. Hope instead focuses on the more contemporary theme of shared optimism in darker times, and was written as a reflection on the power of humanity amongst global shutdowns and tragic loss of life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
    Hope is a simple and open-ended work with a clear melodic line and boundless phrasing opportunities. I originally wrote Hope as a compulsory solo for Marimbafest 2020 (a marimba festival which was cancelled due to COVID-19) to allow performers to freely present their phrasing and voicing abilities. Sometimes, the simplest works can show the most about a musician's thoughts, emotions and intentions, and as such your performance of Hope will always be unique amongst everyone else's.

    Thank you for listening to my new piece 'Hope'! It's the simplest and most accessible work for solo marimba I've released and gives you a chance to explore all of your voicing and expression possibilities as a performer, and I hope you enjoy playing it some time, whether it's for a recital, jury, audition or just for fun. If you enjoyed the piece, please give me a thumbs up above :)

    Hold on just a minute. All of Adam’s compositions for two people have two-word titles, and all of his compositions. for one person have one-word titles. This can’t just be a coincidence

    I’m in high school band, but the rest of my high school year was cancelled. I’m going to college as a CompSci major. I don’t know if there’ll be a marimba where I’m at. I don’t know if I’ll ever play the marimba again. I really needed this. Thank you.

      Hey thank you so much Hope (same name!!) 🤗 Ah uncertainty is always tough but going to study compsci is a big thing and is awesome! I'm sure you will find another opportunity to play marimba, whether it's for school, for friends or for your personal enjoyment. There's always time for music in the future, don't worry 😁

    Thank you for composing such a beautiful piece. As soon as I heard it, I knew I had to play it. This was my first four mallet marimba solo and my first solo ever! It was very fun to learn and memorize. I chose to learn this piece for a state solo competition. I got a perfect score from the judge and he said he really enjoyed the piece. I also performed this in another marimba solo completion and got second place with the solo. Once again, thank you so much for inspiring me to play and creating this masterful piece. :)

    Really considering auditioning for my undergrad music scholarship with this piece...stuff like this just moves me.
    From an analysis standpoint, the theme is so beautiful. The exposition of the theme in the first few phrases almost sound like a lullabye you would sing to your child to help them sleep at night. And then the theme builds with more color in the chords all the way until the emotional climax which in my opinion is the key change. And as the piece winds down it is almost like the child you are singing to is finally sound asleep. Honestly if “Hope” was already taken as a title, I would call it “Peace”.
    And I’m just a high school student, whose primary instrument is rudimental (marching) snare drum, so I may be completely wrong. But is any interpretation truly wrong? :) Excellent work Adam. I really enjoyed listening this and I would much like to play it one day. Hoping you are well

    Hey man, I have a question. So I'm what I'd consider a former marimbist(haven't had access to one for 6 yrs). I never got too into things(for example the hardest pieces I played well were Virginia Tate and rhythm song) So My issue is that someone close to me is selling a 4 octave(not 4.3) Rosewood marimba for 2000 USD. I kinda feel like that's worth jumping on but is it worth investing since it seems any decent song would be 4.3? and back when I played years ago I got used to 5 octave marimbas as well so I might just feel like I cant play anything. Thoguhts?

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the question Chase! 4 octave is super limiting nowadays when it comes to modern music. I feel like for that price you are better off getting a padouk marimba that's 4.3, as a 4.0 octave isn't really able to perform much repertoire anyway so the sound quality difference is essentially a non-factor. So your first instinct is right haha!
      You could also consider saving a bit more and getting something like a Mode synthetic 5 octave marimba, at least you'll be able to play all repertoire without limitations :)
