★ BACKGROUND NOTES ★
Sunflower echoes the imagery and floral nature of my previous work Lotus, giving the performer an opportunity to express colours and shades on the marimba in a neo-Romantic manner. The sunflower is a bright yellow flower that is often seen in warmer weather amongst green grass, but can also be grown in harsh winter environments while still retaining its signature warm appearance.
As a representation of strength, positivity and happiness, Sunflower's main theme ('the Sunflower theme') blossoms and builds up to a tremendous climax with powerful triplet chords, before its petals are broken down into a miniature, bare version of the original Sunflower theme. Sunflower finishes with a trickling run of diads, followed by a single high B - the sunflower's petals falling to the ground and wilting away, so a new one can grow in its place.
Therefore, Sunflower is a reflection of being warm, bright and radiant, even in the toughest and coldest times. Every time I perform this, it reminds me to be grateful for everyone and everything I have around me.

Thank you so much for listening to my new solo 'Sunflower' 🌻 I'm so happy to be dropping this one as it's a piece that really resonates with me this year, and I hope you enjoy playing it too! It's on par with Lotus in terms of difficulty level, and the voicings are a little bit more complex than my previous pieces, so it should be a bit of a fun challenge.

I'm a freshman and i wanna try to play this for my spring concert if its eligible. But I told my percussion friends my solos yellow after the rain and I wanna surprise them with this. Prove to them im great. So I'm gonna learn it. I got this. Final Update: I got a superior rating with this thank you adam for this.

Im a freshman, didnt even know how to read notes until the start of marching band this year when i did vibes, now im doing marimba for the drumline season and I think imma do it too. Dont know about the superior rating but I'll give it my best shot, the concert isnt until a while tho.
The melody sounds familiar too, I'm pretty sure I've heard something similar to it from a canto-pop song before lol. The piece seems inspired by them as well!
Finally, a new Adam Tan solo that we can play on our high school's 4.3s. And ofc this song is great.

I asked my percussion director if I could play this solo freshman year and he said no because it was "way too hard". I got a different solo and felt unmotivated to practice it, mainly because I didn't like it. I left percussion that year because of other problems with the director. Ever since I have become extremely depressed and reclusive as I have lost my outlet. Sometimes I come back to this video and think about what could have been. This is a really beautiful piece and I would like to thank you for sharing it with the world.

@@AdamTanPercussion here's a thought. Could you write with BOTH in mind? Like make it sound perfect and complete on 4.3 but you also write in some grey notes in the score that are only on a 5 and the player may slip those notes in if they have them but don't have to.

I've missed it so badly and I can't wait to work off the rust and then start learning new material. This is definitely one I'll be learning! This song has a nice personal connection to me too. I started raising sunflowers this year.
Good afternoon Mr.Tan. My name is Alejandro and thank you for being such an inspiration. Your words have always been such a help to me and my journey to becoming a better musician. I'm from a tiny town, Progreso, Texas, and I'm in the Progreso High School Band. I'm a senior now, the only percussionist who can do 4 mallets, and having been in the band ever since the sixth grade - I learned how to perform because of you. My school has not had a percussion instructor ever since I've been in band. I persevered because of your teaching and just this past week. I earned a division two at state solo and ensemble playing 'Ghost Garden' by Adam Hopper.
After that. I've been looking for another solo, and I found it. Your piece 'Sunflower' is so freaking amazing. It made me cry. It made me think of all that I've accomplished during my time in band. It made me think of love, pain, and perseverance. After I had listened to your piece for the thousandth time - I knew - that I wanted to end my last year of high school with 'Sunflower'.
So off I went to check the UIL Prescribed Music List to see if your piece was eligible for Solo & Ensemble competition and when I searched for it - it wasn't there. I was very sad about that. I still am. However, I still went through all 4.3 octave 4 mallets marimba solos(my school doesn't have the money to buy a new larger octave marimba) to see if I liked one better than 'Sunflower'. I could not find one.
Mr. Tan. I want to play 'Sunflower' to end a chapter of my life that I'll never go back to. I ask that you can submit 'Sunflower' to be an eligible piece in the UIL Prescribed Music List. I know that an email from a complete nobody won't matter to you seeing as how you must be a busy man. But if you can spare some time to listen to a nobody's request - that would make me the happiest I've ever been. Have a good day Mr. Tan

Dang man every piece you compose is so beautiful. Your compositions remind me of a delicate and soft melodically driven Keiko Abe, they are all so unique! You are really making your own in percussion and innovating the marimba rep! Only a matter of time until colleges start seeing these pieces in auditions I’m sure.

Just bought this beautiful solo! Super excited to try it out for myself!! I thought this would be a great piece to practice my actual performance movement skills, since this piece is not rhythmically challenging for me, but my performance skills are less than ideal.

Hey Adam! Wow! Just a wonderful piece--again! I love that your pieces all seem to have this flavor of like...light piano solos (light in the sense of deftly gliding across the keyboard). I imagine it's some mixture of your composing style along with your mallet choice and recording setup.
Since you're looking for suggestions, have you composed any chorales yet? (I don't recall seeing any, though maybe you've got one planned for this year already.)
Also! I don't remember ever seeing you talk about composing. At this point, it might be cool to see a video about your process when it comes to composing, seeing as you're building quite the oeuvre (hard word for me to spell...or know exactly when/how to use)!
I would also say that your pieces don't seem to have much...dissonance or gravitas, I think? As far as I can tell. Maybe it'd be cool to hear a piece from you that's kinda intense, like (for example) that Russian piece that Therese absolutely crushed ua-cam.com/video/N0yrsEgBrj0/v-deo.html
(Not a criticism at all. I *really* like your pieces and still plan to learn most if not all of them...as soon as I get through the monster that is Doug Perry's Undertale Variations. Just a suggestion if you're wanting to try something a bit different.)
