Hey guys, I just wanted to clear things up! It's amazing to see Sydney getting back into training so soon after giving birth and altering movements to better align with the needs of her body (such as standing ab exercises). This makes a lot of sense and will be effective for her, but not necessarily for you. Assuming you are healthy and without any hindrances, standing ab exercises will be largely ineffective and my disappointment primarily stems from the fact that wasn't made as clear as it could've been in her video.
You should also consult your doctor, midwife, or relevant medical professional before undertaking any exercise after giving birth. Thank you :)

After doing Sydney for years, I moved to Caroline for her training methods.
I recently went back to try Sydney again and realised just how much her commentary helps me keep focus on my form. (A voice in my ear saying “ah ah”)
I think Caroline and Fitness_KayKay are amazing and they really push my limits (to failure) BUT my form turned iffy. Yes they both have great form themselves but unless I’m looking at the screen and comparing my form, I tended to slack off in areas... 😮
Doing one Sydney leg workout reminded me that her constant form tips being vocalised is so valuable to a homework.
The closest thing to a trainer correcting me in the gym - I’d say.
Of course this boils down to ME AND MY FORM, but there’s something to doing the exercise and hearing corrections than looking up and comparing myself in the mirror.
Tips and miming are great but it’s all visual and when working out, I’m not focused on the screen, more my own mind muscle connection.
Still I love all three ladies and I’m glad I’m spoilt for choice.
I would love the other two vocalising more.
    But that’s just ME!!!
    PS - AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 ROCKS!!!!

I also want to note - as others have - she is eleven weeks postpartum…however, watching it I actually got the feeling that she was so fidgety because she feels worried about the loss of strength post baby. I felt like that after both of my babies - despite teaching dance classes throughout both, I struggled to do simple things after they were born. It’s a scary feeling, especially when you’re used to being in great shape like Sydney has always been. I felt like she was almost worried about being able to keep up with everything since having her baby - oh the first baby panic is real lol ❤️

Thank you for giving a fair, honest critique of Sydney. I started doing her workouts over the summer and I love them, so when I saw the thumbnail I was very afraid, lol. Instead, I found this video to be very helpful, and I will use your recs in place of some of the moves she suggests, here. I love Sydney's workouts because she never focuses on aesthetics and stresses the importance of getting stronger, which is rare for a female fitness UA-camr, at least in my experience. Since I can't afford a gym membership, her content has been amazing for me. Thanks again for approaching it the way you did and not bursting my bubble. ;)

Your tips on form were so helpful! I've followed Sydney for years and love her workouts, but have recently noticed more pain in my elbow joint when doing hammer curls and regular curls. I think your suggestion of doing cross body and not rotating outward so much in the regular curls will help not put so much pressure on my elbow joint. I'm looking forward to trying out these tips to see if the movements feel better that way!

Thank you x 1 million for clearing up the matter of the flared arms. I’ve spent the last four years wondering WHY all the trainers tell you not to. It limits your mobility. As for this workout not being up to normal Sydney level (I tried it and don’t think it is), I’m going to give the lass a break. She gave birth 12 weeks ago and is fiercely cool ♥️ I’m guessing we will see better things, once she has more core stability. Just really happy to see someone promoting movement during and after pregnancy. Thanks as always, Harry, for a fab clip.

Same, I have been following Sydney for years but honestly she has horrendous form for a lot of exercises. She USED to try to use too heavy weights and I could always tell because I would watch her form suffer (one time she was doing a goblet squat with a 100 pound dumbbell and she LOOKED in pain and she was hunched over and barely did three squats. I legit stopped that workout and started another one). I do love some of her workouts but Caroline Girvan is so much better. Her form is better, her workouts are simple and straightforward.

Just like the most effective exercises to do for hypertrophy using only dumbbells, one video could be lower body focussed and one could be upper body.

I feel like Sydneys moving around is supposed to burn extra calories through movement but obviously that's totally ineffective. Also she does many movements so fast and some movements appear as too much momentum and not enough stability (just my personal pov). All the fancy combo moves are fun but a simple good compound will do a better job for hypertrophy 🤔

I hear you and your suggestions, but hear me out….she is post partum and getting back into shape. My guess is that some of the moving and form issues is that she is building her strength back up. Honestly we just can’t know how she is actually feeling in that moment.
She has stated numerous times that the videos she posts are her only workouts. She worked out and posted videos through her entire pregnancy and is building her way back up, which regardless of how fit she was having a baby does a number on one’s body.
What I see is a woman who is working through some things while also providing free, fresh and new content.
Not saying you are wrong, but I feel like there are some others things that you aren’t addressing. And to be fair, you can’t possibly understand what she is going through after having a body. I think there should at least be some sort of acknowledgment of that and perhaps some of things you are critiquing may be due to this.
    Still appreciate the video though.

As a mom, I completely understand what you're saying. I had a traumatic birth with my second that took over a year and surgery to recover from.
HOWEVER, I would not have made fitness content for the general public if I wasn't physically able to provide content on par with what would be expected for an average person.
Sydney mentions that she is post partum in the video, but she says she's ready to be back. She doesn't label it as a post partum workout. Not trying to be insensitive, but if she wasn't ready to teach an ab workout to an average person, she shouldn't have included it in her programming. She has a responsibility to her followers. I don't think many would have been upset if she said she wasn't quite recovered enough for ab exercises and included a clip or link from an older video for abs.

    • @TFNL
      @TFNL  2 роки тому +9

I completely respect that and appreciate that she's doing amazing things, but standing ab movements are still ineffective. Although they may be better for her right now (which I understand), displaying these without educating the audience watching can be harmful as many won't see this video as Sydney's personal workout. They will instead see a workout series she's promoting to her audience (which does seem to be the case), and fairly assume that they should copy it. A simple disclaimer of "this movement isn't effective for working the abdominal region in healthy adults, but I am choosing to incorporate it due to having recently birthed a child" would've been really useful. A bit of elaboration and education can go a long way, especially in the online space! I appreciate you and your comment, thank you

I really appreciate your constructive criticism and tips in this video, I don’t take it negatively against Sydney as a person and I don’t think you do either from listening here.
We know she is just back from a short maternity leave and is trying to work her strength and fitness level back up. But as someone who did not recently give birth, I was following her workout program and would have liked if it was clarified that the movements she picked is for her still recovering, and not for general strength like I am looking for, I trust her as a trainer. I don’t mean this negatively but she mentioned this program was for strength training so I followed blindly thinking every exercise chosen will be a good one and I watch to follow her form. I’ve been following Sydney for a couple years and I do really like her but seeing her programming now, I may follow someone else at least temporarily. I hope she doesn’t push herself too far right now either, I really want the best for her and her new family.

I usually do some dynamic full body stretching with more emphasis on the muscles I will be working during the workout. I have stopped doing warmup cardio before workouts as I heard that only fatigues you without doing anything, but I'm still not sure about that as it seems useful to literally warm up your body slightly. I also see a lot of youtubers doing warm up sets, is that necessary? It would make my workouts a lot longer and I'm not sure whether it changes anything. Thanks!

~4:30 ohhh what you said about the reason why Sydney was moving while doing those bicep moves makes sense! I don't think I'd be able to move like that because it'd be hard for me to focus on the move unless I was working with dumbbells that weren't too challenging ^_^;;; Sydney is probably much more coordinated than I am, but it's good to know that it's probably not really beneficial to move like that, because I know I'd hurt myself trying to do all that haha

Truth be told, i injured my back badly doing youtube/youtubers/youtube fitness trainer workout programs since 2020. Though i've seen many success stories of reaching their desired physique through youtubers workouts, me personally have worsen my physiological structure due to bad form/too many repetitions/no rest during the workouts/doing too much too soon! I don't blame the trainers but its upto us to really be conscious of what we are doing to and with our bodies. After i finished a famous trainer's 12 weeks series 3 months back, i'm now hardly able to do a squat without back pain. It feels like "was that even worth it?" now! If you know certain exercises isn't good for you and modify accordingly, great! If not, you're just on the way to injury if you force yourself to perform the same way like the trainer is doing that particular movement.
God knows when i'm gonna get back to training..but next time its not gonna be youtube workouts for sure! 🙌🏼

Sydney is a good trainer I like her workouts for the most part I do find myself changing things occasionally because I don't like the exercise or it just doesn't feel good in my body I do also feel like she focuses a little bit no not a little bit A LOT A bit too much on crunching and "fold yourself in half" core exercises. There are so many other ways that require full body work that strength in your abs so much better and I really do wish that she would try to incorporate more of that rather than sit-ups and crunches and Jack knives and all those other things that just give me a backache and make me feel like my stomach is about to tear in half. No offense Sydney I love ya. 💙

I do feel like a lot of YT trainers are making programs to entertain the masses. Like instead of people being grateful for free anytime content they're fussy and expect more. I think back to my mums day and she didn't have this all available to her especially after having kids. Yet people now will complain when a trainer makes a video that they feel is boring lol. I have friends who do Caroline programs and they just go from one to the next because they're bored when in reality you could repeat a program. It's not as if they're pushing themselves from the get go and need to change. So when you train like that of course you'll get bored. Like anything really. You're training your brain to expect more lol

Also as you are well aware she just had a baby, have you ever had a baby? No you’re a man. Women’s bodies are built differently and change after having children. I don’t see what coming on UA-cam dissecting women’s workouts do for you? Are you a personal trainer? Why don’t you stick to your clients instead of getting bored and coming on UA-cam to make it seem like someone is just all out wrong with an X on her video saying why would she promote this??? She’s an amazing trainer and I’m very happy with her workouts. She has 1.4 million subscribers so obviously plenty of people are as well. You keep referring to “if you were at the gym” well we’re not at a gym we’re at home……..so this is the workouts she’s providing with if we have this equipment or not. If it makes you feel better to put on your little crown and make comments about it your elbows were .3 inches to the left it would be correct, have at it bro.
