- Please consider supporting the project each week with a few dollars / brupeg
We’re getting closer to being able to go on anchor. This week we got some good news, we can stay on this work berth for up to three months if we need to so we don’t need to move to a more restrictive marina berth like we were previously told…
This means… we can get all of the outside prep work done here before we go on anchor and head offshore on our first voyage into the Great Barrier Reef. So now that the pressure is off Damien, Tom and Birk get our little back up genset properly installed and fabricate the second of three exhaust stacks.
Thanks Tom for you help a few months ago when this was filmed, and some more good news, Birk has booked his flights back to Brupeg for early next year.
Thanks everyone for your lovely support, see you next week!

I am converting a small 3.5:kw for my trawler. But plan to go with wet exhaust. By eliminating the muffler inside the enclosure you are reducing a HUGEmsource of heat that you have to extract. I am using s/s fittings all the way and will go out thru the stern with the wet exhaust. My main motor is also wet.. Enjoy watching your show. And how you rationalize the work you do. ATB.
Hi Wilson, yeah we pondered going g wet exhaust with this for noise and heat but decided the possibility of fumes curling round and into the rear cabin was to high so opted to push it out the roof. I agree with the muffler being a potential issue with heat. If it turns out to be too hot I’ll just delete it from the box and put a stainless version outside the sound box, possibly above the roof line
Well done,
Bundaberg Port Marina!
You guys rock
Good things happen to good people
3 stacks will look awesome.
As always

I'm going to tell your wife you said she was doing dingy stuff implying that she is dingy 😂😂❤❤
Not saying BRUPEG is not good looking, but damn she looks heaps better floating and moving forward on the river under own power. You all did amazing jobs under the watchful eye of capt. Jess.
Timestemp:12:34 Has a certain similarity to the FLUX COMPENSATOR from "Back to the Future"...... joke
I think you’re going to kill the generator by enclosing it those types of generators need air all around it. The electrical system won’t survive the additional heat. Better have a backup system.
Hes gonna force air through the box. It will be fine.
It would be a good idea to use exhaust wrap on the genny. Helps with scavenging and reduces external temperature. Those genny mufflers do tend to accumalate oily residuses . I do like that ally dingy. It rather cute. Dave UK.
That generator is going to need a generous supply of fresh air to keep it cool.
Cant wait to see Brupeg completed and the decks all cleared of debris and rubbish.
It's kinda like cleaning the garage and everything is in its place.
Ditto! It’s almost got as much crap onboard as Renko
Great episode - so glad to hear Birk has booked his return flight as I was starting to have Birk withdrawal symptoms.
Cool Tom! Never seen an adjustable hammer before. Serious multifunctional tool.
I have a question is the oil level and pick up you might need pressure pump to the oil system making a dry sump system. To stop the engine going low of oil.
to much talking .
The comment about the dingy being "aluminium tubes" is stupid. Ignore the fact that they are tubes and it's basically an aluminium boat, it's just unsinkable. Some people just can't think 2 steps before they type.
Have you considered mounting the engine room exhaust fan in the funnel on the upper deck. If you tightly seal the shroud around the exhaust stack and seal the funnel to the deck, it will provide a path for the warm air. I have seen ships funnels with a rounded forward section and a flat surface to the stern. Much like an elongated letter D. A fan or fans could be mounted on the flat section drawing air from the engine room. I assume the engine room hatch will be closed while you're underway.
I look forward to seeing the progress you make each week. Good luck.
I hadn’t thought about mounting it anywhere but the engine room. I assumed salt air is the enemy and is least salty inside the engine room. I’ll have to ponder this. Thanks for your input, it’s given me something to think about for the future design
I would be concerned that the gen set's exhaust is too long and will create too much backpressure to allow the engine to run efficiently and produce the power necessary for the generator. The existing silencer will produce some back pressure that would be of little concern due to the overall size and the proximity of the exit. Internally, the silencer will have baffles that disrupt the gas flow to dissipate energy and therefore noise. Couple that with a long exhaust where the gas flow is slowed by the frictional loss along the pipe along with the cooling and by slowing the gas you create more backpressure. I would guess that a simple expansion box set at the optimum distance from the back of the valve will help e.g. ~ 30-40" (750-1000mm) depending on valve size, cam timing, lift and operating revs. I doubt that any silencer will be needed or desirable.
Nice work! I see so many bends in that exhaust, and a long run up, any concerns about pressure? will the small engine be able to release free? :)
Either yes or no. If it’s able to, we will leave the pipe as is. If it struggles, we will bump the size of the long vertical run up to 2”. It’s a very small engine and it’s a 1.5” exhaust so I feel like it’s a large size for the cylinder as it is but time will tell and if we are wrong then we can change it. I had very little to go off, I couldn’t find any examples online of others extending exhaust this much for a small engine like this
The muffler will be hot, would the wires that go under it need protected?
Yes. I’m going to move them under the main alternator
Small engines like what is used on that generator do not like having long exhaust runs. Connecting pipe to the existing muffler is not a good idea either. It would be better to have the exhaust pipe connect directly to the cylinder head of the engine.
There is different styles of v band flanges and the best are machined with registers so that the flanges interlock which provides better sealing and they are always perfectly aligned.
Never feed the reddit trolls; they are a bunch of do nothing, know everything talking heads.
Just moving from strength to strength.
Love the look of the new exhaust.
It's not Hot Glue, it is a Thermally Modified Adhesive. Right up there with "CAD" Cardboard Added Design.
how are you going to ventilate(read cool) the engine. without a full ventilation system for the engine, it won't last 24 hours. Heat is your enemy
How does an air cooled engine get enough air inside a box? Are you installing a small fan or isn't it needed?
In a future episode you’ll see how we solve it
🤣🤣Sod em, moaning about your dingy. It took some real mental arithmetic to build. So it has to say 🤣🤣 great update 2x👍
Brillant install on the Genset....................................>👍👍👍
Epic progress pipes look awesome
Need to find you one of the new Mazda rotary range extenders
nice job and muffler, that muffler is not really a muffler, the only thing in there is a chunk of catalytic material. it only when you get a yanmar muffler it will sorta a muffler.
Curious to see what you gonne do for cooling on the gennie
Consider getting.. assuming the generator needs 12 volt .. a 063 .. they are about the cheapest battery and most likely more power and cheaper than the original battery.
Awesome. Definitely look at that. Do you have a link for one so I know what I’m hunting for?
@@ProjectBrupeg
Batteries have (I'm reasonably sure internationally, I'm in the UK) a 3 digit number..
The 063 is used in many small engine cars that have the room, 1 to 1.8 litre petrol.
They are about the cheapest per Ah.
It may have Letters and/or other numbers in front or after the 063 to denote manufacturer/plate type etc.
An additional thing to know.. for example 643/644 is a 90Ah (ish Ah depending on plate type) the same battery but the two 3 digit numbers are the same battery but refer to which way the terminals are.
You asked for a link.. (you should have blocked links in the comments)
Also I don't know how to look up things as if I am where you are.
Look up '063 lead acid battery price' .. I actually looked up '063 price'
Get the mid to lower price one with 4? years guarantee.
I did think you could use your main 12 volt battery within the 24 volt set but being independent is useful.
I was thinking you could have done the exhaust without the silencer.. be aware the stack height may affect how it runs particularly when cold due to the weight of the gases causing back pressure, the silencer will have already added to that.. so if you do have problems possiblity remove the silencer.
Did you get advice about extracting heat from the exhaust?
btw Sea Prince is 40ft x 12'6", 1946 Norfolk Broads Cruiser I found striped, sunk and unloved in 1988, everything done on a very limited income.
Hope this helps.
Dont forget you will get a lot of condensate in that genny exhaust. Will it ever get hot enough to dry out?
Grumpy at his best.. keep it up Mr: Grumpy... now those Jealous mother fathers who give you negative comments don't waste your time talking about it, best is keep doing what you are doing.. lot of us around the world love you and your team of what you have been doing, so keep the mother fathers out and lets started sail soon.. Be well and be safe to all of you and Merry Christmas..!!
What about a drainage point for the genset exhaust Damn? or does it not require one? Great news that Birk will be back In the new year. He is an absolute asset to Brupeg.
For fire blankets, the "proper" welding blankets are silly expensive, but they also sell them as fire blankets to put out stove/fryer fires, and those are quite reasonably priced (and they come in white!) :)
She looks so much better in the water. Bad ass
Guessing you'll have to open up the floor again to get the 20K genset down to the engine room?
Actually cut a hole in the rear deck and drop it into place. And rather than weld the deck back in build a flush hatch to act as a second fire escape for the engine room
Makes sense. @@ProjectBrupeg
Throw out some HINTS out there for ya. One question though did ya install a pipe and ball valve through the fiberglass bottom from the oil sump for easy pms. An axle flux vertical disk generator is more efficient even in a low breeze. I’d turn that one into that. Tip for small engine exhaust remove the original muffler from the build than upgrade useing a 4 cylinder or motor cycle engine muffler attached to the bulk head. To really muffle the noise from small generators.
You probably completed it but I would remove exhaust straight pipe it and place the muffler outside will lower the temperature in the box.
Why run muffler is a straight pipe? When yall get most of everything done yall are going to have to go back and a week or two of straight clean up and repainting everything and then yall should be ready 😊
Phew, lots going on this week! Good to see the baby gennie all mounted and (almost) ready to go. Great news about the work berth.
Damo, you had a section where your back was to the hull, where you were talking about joining multiple exhausts to one large exhaust. There looked to be a huge spike coming out of the wall. May need a cover over it. It may just be my job history taking..
There is actually three huge spikes… but they no longer need to be there and I haven’t got around to cutting them off but I bloody will next time I’m down there. Thanks for spotting them and reminding me!
Too many commercials on your channel. won’t be long and you’ll have vaccines advertised and pillows for sale. I want the ability to click out of the commercials. other than that I like your channel
Yeah UA-cam are probably advertising more coming up to Christmas. How many ads? Sometimes they ignore our limit we put on and we have to change it back. Thanks for watching and dealing with the ads, it’s how we creators get paid for all the hours of filming and editing involved in making independent content. J😘
Slip rings in the wind turbine
good on the Bundaberg Port marina taking care of Brupeg & her crew your are absolute legends, more checkmarks on the to do list good stuff, boat is looking good guys, stay safe all. 😎😎
Just a note that with portable generators there are three common ways of how the earth (ground) wire is connected, so if you are connecting this genset as an alternative source into your wired distribution, you need to make sure your earthing setup is consistent across the various ac supplies, so no fights break out.
Thanks, yes my plan is not to start this genset until Duncan has checked all the electrics and it’s been signed off with our sparky as well. I dont know enough about spicy AC wiring to know if it’s right or wrong so I’m not getting my fingers in that pie. Dame
If I wasn't flat-broke, I would send you money.
Thanks for watching. Glad we can share it with you!
How do you intend to air cool the engine? With the enclosure in place, where is cooler air going to enter it and exit? Both the diesel and the generator will require this.
Small tube inserted into larger tube blowing across the top gives a vacuum = good exhaust scavenging. “Should” always have a slight negative pressure in the small tube. Thinking cut straw paint spray in nursery school..
ce n'est plus un bateau ,ces un magasin-entrepôt ??????
Absolutely. And until we finish building the things we need to store the gear away ready for sea it will carry on being a warehouse.
Why is the camera wobbling on the time lapse?
The camera is actually still. It’s the boat wobbling in the waves and the internal camera gyro’s trying g to compensate
Agree you made the right decision re independent exhausts for each engine. Take a look at the oil rig support vessels. Keep on keeping on, you lot are a shining example of true grit! All the best for the festive season. Cheers Jim
heres a thought dame...remote mechanical exhaust deposit removal system.... the engineer in both of you knows you want one lol thanks for the vids
Prawn aren't just large shrimp,, they are a different species all together as they have 3 leg pairs with pincer claws while shrimp only have 2 pairs of legs with pincers.
It is really looking good.
Jenny
Good you have some wiggle room to complete noisy work. Safe working & looks like all is being stowed. Important to have comfortable areas relax & recovery.
Every time i kept thinking 'you need to take that into account', the next second you did!
Great to see the marina taking care of you too!
Which exhaust pipe will the "propane injector exhaust flame thrower" be mounted? Thank you guys for one of my favorite youtube channels!🔥
Put a handle on the cover sides maybe. Could you use carbon felt to gasket the exhaust on the box? How does the deck seal? will the below decks exhaust be fan assisted up through another box?
As usual, so nice to see this project cruising along ! Can't wait for our European representative to be back on track with you guys ^^
I've watched a video of SV Seeker where he talks about welding blankets. he states that you can use nice leather skins as well, don't know if you've thought of that (but perhaps they are harder to maintain or keep from rotting, not sure about that). Anyways, wanted to share that with you as SV seeker has more experience in boat building than I do ^^
Cheers from Belgium and keep the vids going !
Great work as always. On the generator wiring, how about routing it below the generator so that it isn’t vibrating on top of the housing?? Getting it down low will also keep it away from the muffler/exhaust heat.
Exactly our thoughts. Once I changed the muffler I thought that wiring needs to move. It’s on our list to change
Great to hear. Always best to avoid the problem before it happens.
Your crappie aluminium dingy is a little ripper. We have all seen you guys do all sort of stuff using it, it seems to be of great utility. I do think a bit of paint (some makeup) would be nice, racing strips and a name ? How about Pru2 or Peggy ?
Suggestion: Paint the inside of the gen set box white. When you service or get a breakdown, you can see where any leaks come from, fuel or oil by just removing the covers
You can Mix exhausts easy, run the little exhaust pipe inside the big one 6in, pointing with the flow, each exhaust will create a little vacume on the other, not nearly enough to cause any issues, you prob can't even measure it but it's enough it doesn't back flow
Iv got the same Chinese deisel as a compressor, I extended thebexhaust as well I don't like your chances of that muffler lasting long, they're made of cheese
70% of the niose is the actual engine, don't be afraid to mount the exhaust straight to the head, it'll be noisy on the roof at the stack but will make no noticeable difference in the engine room
For your air casing ventilation, if you pressurize the engine room the air will flow up the air casing up the side of the exhaust is the only opening you will get updraft up and out
Mount the fans on the supply duct
Fire flaps on the supply to the engine room and at the top of the air casing
Have you thought about signal integrity on the Ethernet for the monitoring system? Emi and static can easily destroy that signal. It can be done but there is a reason auto manufacturers use canbus or similar with protections.
Hey guys, Damo with that exhaust angled down now and running horizontally close to the generator, will it affect the Gen performance at all? Ex. News about birth, plenty of time to sort the jobs now. Jess, you look great with that tan girl. Well done guys
You can combine the exhaust, if you put the exhaust pipe 5-10cm in to the main exhaust in the flow direction. That will create a vacuum in the generator exhaust when exhaust from the main engine flows past. Would work great for the 5kw generator, the big one howewer would obstruct the main engine too mutch.
I don't think it's that simple, because the Genset exhaust is not free flowing, just part of the pressurised volume. I don't think the Venturi effect would work quite as you describe.
@@ipullstuffapart Have you tried it? There is no pressure to speak of on the exhaust side in a 6in pipe with no muffler, but there is gas velocity flowing past, so in my experience this works. Only issue he might find is that the exhaust gass can backflow thru the main engine, but that has not happened in the setups i have done this in. Anyhow, Dame put up a single stack for the generator. But if there is issues with too long exhaust stack, and too high backpressure. This can be the solution for them
What a boat, what a crew, and cat...
Might be a good idea to check and see what the thermal operating range of the generator portion of that GenSet is, I suspect it's going to get pretty darn warm in that box and it might be too hot for the generator part.
I have to say it, these last two episodes have been exhausting.
another enjoyable vid, just one small thing, could I ask you before answering walleyes that moan and groan, could you put a hot drink warning in a caption in the bottom of the screen, I had a mouthful of piping hot milky coffee and burst out laughing when you pulled your, SO THERE FACE, I sprayed the dog and we have not seen him since, lol
I bet you could make a six blade fan for that wind generator from 1/2 cm aluminium or plastic and add a safety ring to the tips to keep curious pussy cats and careless sailors from ending up looking like Kimchee. With a bit of shaping, the ring would also add the Coanda effect to increase efficiency... Or, you could just buy new blades and have time for a cuppa and some Tim Tams...😜
Great job and keep up the good work, now I want to see your generators running and functioning, you can put as much content on your videos as you want to show us some beginning to end projects as I always look for you videos every Sunday. Thanks
9:33 look at SV Delos’ dinghy… same
Looking forward to seeing the wings in action!
What ever happened to the larger floor pan you had for the other larger diggy build?
We decided not to proceed with that build
Thanks for bringing us along for the adventure.... I can't tell from the pictures, but does the exhaust pipe get larger at some point after the muffler? Over a long run, back pressure might be an issue if it doesn't.
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘
Where is the Total Boat supplier in Oz?
Actually no idea. Never heard of it over here but I’ll (Dame) preference that with we do very little glassing so me not knowing about them as about as relevant as a goose not knowing about differential equations.
Thanks Dame. I see Total Boat supporting several boat projects in the US and the Thixo looks like a really handy way to use thickened epoxy, The Duracell Project is using a ton of it. It's great to see Brupeg afloat, give us a shout if you ever come into Mooloolaba. @@ProjectBrupeg
@rogerbayzand4455 cheers aye. We were looking for a pontoon down that way. We want to spend about a month there so it’s easy for Duncan to do the last of the wiring on the monitoring system prior to us pushing off. If you know of any wharfs/berths let us know aye! (we’ve check marinas and none want to take our boat with our current insurance as it’s not Aussie insurance)
Merry Christmas to Brupeg crew , thank you for sharing your excellent adventure . Have a safe and healthy New Year Best wishes from San Diego , Calif USA
Great video! Looking forward to when Birk is back on board.
A Salute to All of the People that have Contributed to Project Burpeg! Wish You All a Very Merry Christmas🎄
I've got one of those generators in a cabinet. If it isn't a brushless alternator (mine isn't) I humbly suggest to carry spare brushes. They don't cost much. Mine wore out and it was infuriating because I didn't have a spare and I had to take a day off so it cost me 20x more than the cost of the bloody brushes.
Also the fuel cutoff solenoids fail a bit. Also they don't cost much. If it does fail you can just pull the guts out of it to get you going but for the modest cost perhaps a spare is in order.
The other thing that fails is the springs on the governor.
Re the governor springs you can't easily regulate the frequency with varying load unless you carry a spare complete governor to pilfer the springs from. Apart from those 3 items you get about 3500-4000hrs out of the engine. Complete engines are about $800.
The power from them is pretty dirty. I stupidly ran a desktop computer off mine and it killed the power supply but it took quite a long time for that to happen but it was hypothetically repairable (even if uneconomical).
Great info. Thanks for this
Have been watching for years and have learned much that have improved my mechanical/welding abilities. And the Cat is pretty cool too.
I must bring forward a complaint. I am distressed to see so much Kitty abuse. That cat is obviously telling us viewers that she needs more love and that the love she is getting from you guys is insufficient. So we will be watching you Jess and Dame and expect an exponential increase in the love applied to said kitty! There will be rewards for these actions. Thank you for your attention to this.
P.S. The kitty paid me to say this! 😁
Hehe, love it! J
Another Fella made the point before but You should evacuate the heat as fast as You can out of the genny box. I wonder over another (maybe) issue: the length and size of the exhaust pipe. The length might collect condensate while running, especially when only on for short times.
So: the engine end (I think) should get a good insulation and a muffler somewhere in line, scrap the original. I belive: keeping the exhaust heat in to carry it along would quickly get rid of condensation and quieten the pipe down.
And I have the opinion the pipe should be thicker to get flow resistance down a bit over all the length.
Have a beautiful Christmas, Guys!
I love that aluminum dingy. That thing is sweet
The exhaust water trap needs a drain.
49:50 Can I quote you on that 😂?
Yes. But I reserve the right to ignore what I said
Ha, ha, ha! Looking forward for mor sea-trials!

Nice windmill 😂 Happy to help power brupeg and not have to worry about it tearing the mizzen sail

first off love what your doing, now for the funny part it looks like you make 1 steep forward and 2 backwards, that said i no it's a work in progress and your making sure things are right, good job you all ,GOD BLESS YOU ALL

3 separate engines with independent exhaust outlets , simple and perfect just like the entire build….almost 😜. Well done as always 👍🍻
This is an awesome video dame! Good location for it To i reckon
I can't remember who made them but at one time there was somebody that made dinghies with aluminum tubes why would somebody be freaked out
Just curious, how do you prevent/reduce rain water or water from the roof from entering the engine room through the exhaust shrouding?
At this stage it comes in. Once the funnel is built it won’t be an issue
Welcome back Birk..couldn’t stay away long enough to celebrate Xmas in Germany….good on ya

Could you use some stainless heating ducting to encase the three exhaust and also continue the hot air up out of the engine room up high so it exhaust the heat out hight with the exhausts while also looking clean
