While the cadets finish their 3 day camp we get on with necessary jobs on Brupeg while we can continue to use TS Bundaberg's wharf. It's been a week of esential jobs that were pushed down the priority list now getting the needed attention. Welding hull holes, moving barges, possible engine misalignment and fun with it all!
We hope you enjoy this episode, next week...we find out how much the engine is misligned!
Thank you to everyone for an amazing first Brupeg project!
Cheers
Jess, Dame and Babycat

Thanks for watching and for your support!
Jess and Damien, on behalf of the cadets and staff of TS Bundaberg, we thank you for your involvement in our program. It was lovely to meet others who are so passionate about training our youth. You are welcome back at TS Bundaberg anytime. Thank you again for the practical opportunities you offered our cadets and staff. Give Baby Cat a big hug, I am sure she is missing the attention. 😁
Thanks for all you have done Kerry to make it possible. It was so lovely to get to know you, the cadets and staff. It was a great experience and great fun for us.
Credit to you for doing something of value for those within your local community. Your generosity will of benefited those young people's hands-on skills, personal development & experiences. Such a shame that SV Sinker never came through with his promises of assisting others for educational or research purposes
What a mighty ship Brupeg has become.
Did anyone ask Jess if she moved the engine while she was cleaning up the bilge? We know she has super human strength. 👍👍
Lol, Really !!! ❤
Using a rigid coupling adapter is the problem. Just remember that the coupling half on the propeller shaft is the most rigid half. Allow for movement elsewhere (flexible coupling, flexible engine mounts).
Alignment might be as simple as the hull has relaxed a bit sitting in the water for awhile. She was a long time out of the water.
That's exactly what is happening. Watch the damage control room video for the battleship New Jersey and you'll get a basic description why your alignment is off
Was gonna say this
Actually it was much simpler that that. But your gunna need to wait until all is revealed next week
@@ProjectBrupeg spoiler alert lol
I was going to say it's because it was aligned in winter now summer down under metal warpage. But I'll wait and see next week....
Just had to say, after watching your show for 71 years you always have great music.
I've been acquainted with sand fleas, but a sand cat is a whole different can of worms. Lol😅
Guys, the opening introduction with the young cadets quite literally made my chest swell with pride for this select group of young Australians involved in such a great training system, too much we hear of youth problems today in our beautiful country and I often wonder if we could get wayward youths into programs like this how much better they would be prepared for life’s twists and turns. It also reminded me of why I was drawn to this channel in the first place, to hear your vision as a project boat, to see it realised in this first endeavour is truly a testament to that vision. I’m just so damn proud of you two and I can’t wait to see what the next years of adventure and intrigue you bring to this channel. Go Brupeg.
Really nice to see additional footage about the cadet program. What a great opportunity for those kids.
Last job in shipyard was a floating dock. Many coming up after Bridgewater bridge build. Used for many yrs for sub repairs.
You never stop learning with many things to understand.
Hope the run out issue is sorted.
Finding the best direction to travel in prevailing conditions sometimes isn't always possible. But nice when it happens.
Smorgasbord was a great way to serve guests on the windward bound.
Probably you will learn from all the assistance that you are given. 👍
Great set up for the cadets.
Another awesome episode 👏
Brilliant ❤
Cheers from Southern California USA 🇺🇸
Watching Baby Cat in the sand brought back a childhood memory. Remember the old Bugs Bunny cartoons with the Tasmanian Devil? One time Bugs buried hi in a hole and covered him up. Of course when Bugs turned around he was right there and said to Bugs, "Why for you bury me in the cold cold ground?" I just laughed so hard seeing the cat and remembering that.

The cadets have been great for building Brupegs reputation, and of cours, good for the cadets. Now to sort out the realinement of the prop shaft and gear box. I am not an engineer so can't offer any advice. However I have faith in you both to get it sorted.
Great episode guys.
The third one possibilty is what we call "unk unks" or unknown unknowns!
Baby Cat is awesome :)
Upon reading the comments ìt seems that there are probably several solutions for the alignment problem. I will propose another one! I would suggest that your problem could have its origins in the absence of flexibility in your manner of mounting the engine. According to this theory there is no capacity to absorb the inherent shocks of the operating environment. This is to say that it won't matter how tightly you cinch up on the mounting bolts there will always almost certainly be a greater shock force capable of dislodging the engine from its ìdeal location. A small degree of flexibility within the alignment could allow for self-adjustment for such movements. After all, is this not the fundamental purpose of the flexible engine mounting system?
I'm so happy to see Project Brupeg gainfully employed in the service of Australia! A truly fantastic outcome for which you can both be congratulated !😅
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘
The problem is that the engine output coupling is mounted quite close to the propellor shaft inlet coupling and the propeller shaft has very little capacity for “flexibility”. So the engine has to be constrained to the same level of flexibility as the propellor shaft…so a rigid coupling …..and a rigid coupling requires very good alignment. I guess it’s back to jacking the motor and playing with shims to restore the alignment.
Excellent episode with the cadets
I can see why you enjoyed it so much it looks like you guys were an intricate part of their camp
Baby cat's growing up to be a beach bum, next she'll want to go surfing.......
Good on her
All three of you looked very relaxed in this episode, long may it last
😃👍🏼
I remember when you did the alignment you said you didn't want a flexible coupling but it seems like this would be something to consider. Even though she is all metal there is movement and you might be seeing the results of flexing of the hull which has been mentioned in the comments already
We have looked at flex couplings but it’s $3200 for the coupling, and because we have an imperial prop coupling and metric gearbox we need to get a metric prop coupling made to fit a flex coupling. So that’s another 3k plus the engine needs to be moved forward to fit it. So that’s a grand for chockfast. So while flex coupling would be incredible to have it’s 7grand of Patreon money that we don’t need to spend. Its normal for trawlers so have solid engine and shaft couplings. We just need to get it right.
@@ProjectBrupeg When it comes to shelling out money like that it is not an easy decision to make so fully understand that dilemma you face.
I guess we will be seeing engine alignment in one of the next videos - will be interesting to find out what the ultimate cause of the issue is and how you fix it.
I always enjoy the trouble shooting and fixing of problems they are interesting and satisfying videos. Keep them coming.
It could be the weight of things placed around the 855 while its in the water have moved the shafts . 😮😮😮
So glad that you managed to get Kerry and Reg in there. Another amazing video. Knowing Reg's previous (and other voluntary role) did he have any ideas on the shaft?
Actually alignment was easier than we thought. The adapter we have was machined wrong. Alignment t was actually perfect. But because of the adapter, as soon as we bolted the prop to the gearbox to went out
A magnetic indicator and dial reading on the gearbox shaft and the propeller shaft should say something. After that good luck.
I feel Baby cat might need a name change to Mini Sphinx
Engine/ shaft alignment / hull alignment......is a bit of a mystery.
What looks good on a hard standing, will probably not once the hull is afloat and comfortable in the water. This might become an issue again if you increase the weight of the ship contents... what do you think??
I have watched your amazing progress from the beginning. The determination and skill you both have to get the job done is more than I could do.
Maybe I missed the resolution to the listed items below. Please advise.
Did you get the special articulating door to work? Did the veggie oil you processed get saved or used? Can the stabilizers be deployed as installed now? Did the electrical issues get resolved? Did Brupeq pass the appropriate inspections for insurance purposes? Are you both captions certified for piloting Brupeq? I genuinely curious. Long voyages to distant remote locations will be a challenge without fulltime trained backup crew members. Do you plan to hire a crew member or two?
Hi Dale, lots to update on so I’ll list them
Pentagrapgh hinge door: yes all working, it’s been on the boat for a few years now. It’s good but still needs work. We will either modify it to make it more sturdy or take it off. Jess is very pro fancy hinge, I (Dame) just want to have the door work so slowly getting frustrated with the amount of hours it takes up to get perfect.
Veggie oil: the stuff we saved was used oil. We filtered it down but it oxidised because it was in the sun. So no it wasn’t saved. The engine is however built to run oil (even dyno’ed on vege oil) and we are in discussions now about a much bigger vege oil project in the future.
Stabilisers: the stabilisers are the next major thing we will be working on, they in theory work right now but we need to replace the winches as they can only be lifted and lowered using a battery drill currently.
Electrics: everything is running perfectly. Couple of minor improvements we want to do but the system is incredible. 2 days worth of battery capacity without recharge and solar is enough to power the boat during the day. We need to run the genset for about 2hrs a day in total
Brupeg checks: in Aussie there is no checks for a private boat. You need an insurance survey (which we passed easily) but if I’m honest that has nothing to do with a boats condition and everything to do with things like doors locks and stopping break ins. My opinion of insurance surveys is they are a necessary joke so you can buy insurance.
Captain qualifications: in Aussie to pilot a boat this size you only need a basic 1 day course to get your licence. Jess has her QLD licence I have my VHF licence (I can drive when Jess is onboard) so between us we have the paperwork needed. That said I also have nearly 30yrs of driving boats so while I don’t have a boat licence I can handle the boat like it’s an extension of me, it’s like breathing. Now that we are not building the boat so intensely we are turning our attention to qualifications, yacht master is a qualification that both Jess and I want to attain.
Crew: we plan to have two full time crew with us. Brupeg is set up that one person is able to operate this boat but because of the projects we want to take on we can’t do that without crew. Hence we are looking for the right people to join us.
Hi Dame and Jess. Sincere thank you for the detailed reply of my questions. I watch each vid closely to note how you solve each task and challenge to meet the next goal. I understand that you need to be flexible to change based on time and weather conditions.
I noticed in this vid you both are more relaxed and enjoying your time with the cadets. I am truly thankful you had this experience. The questions you must have been asked, wow!
Regarding the drive line alignment issue I can offer this. The vessel "cage" around the drive line is flexing to find its new "normal" position. It will keep flexing based on forces that are changing. Finding the perfect alignment may not be possible when the "cage" shifts to a new position.
Bless you both for sharing your adventure.
Have you thought about a flexible coupling? I would recommend Centa or Vulkan 👍
I would think this will remove vibration dampening too. With metal to metal , where is flexibility?
@assassinlexx1993 we have looked at flex couplings but it’s $3200 for the coupling, and because we have an imperial prop coupling and metric gearbox we need to get a metric prop coupling made to fit a flex coupling. So that’s another 3k plus the engine needs to be moved forward to fit it. So that’s a grand for chockfast. Wow is that a encouraging factor to see Jess running around and doing so much stuff Wow this is just super super great. And the cat is getting used to all sorts of factors in its little life I don't think you're going to have any problem with the cat in the boat worth of beans I think it's going to get used to it all!! It's great to see everything coming together for Brupeg!!!!
Have you come up with a design for the rear gates , that will stand large wave striking the stern? Even a drop down steel bar covering the doors when the ship is underway.
Big wave = big strength
We have a design (vertical dead bolt per gate) just haven’t had the time to built it yet
10:30, seeing how much mud is being kicked up from the bottom, the river has to be pretty shallow there, right? Low tide?
Yeah it’s deep black silty river mud. Good holding but the anchor and chain bury deep so really get covered in slop
What are the symptoms of misalignment that you noticed did you get heaps of noise vibration or loss of power. Hope you van fix on the water
Almost zero symptoms. Boat feels great. I (Dame) noticed a very slight wobble in the gearbox while we were steaming.
Sandy Claws.
I been thinking you should strap Styrofoam to the top of your drone when around water grate with the navy kids 😊😊😊
We actually have been pondering this a lot. DJI offer insurance that allows a replacement drone if you can recover it. Doesn’t need to be alive just needs to be returned. So we are thinking of making a small auto inflating back pack for the drone by using an auto inflatable lifejacket. Cut it done much smaller so it’s lighter, and hopefully less windage than foam etc
@ProjectBrupeg what a good idea I think there would be a market for them 🤔
A bit short...
Yeah we actually felt the same. Next episode should be a decent lenght
Either I'm getting old or these cadets are "highschooler"
I believe they are high school age, 16+
13-18
And you are getting old. I find myself in the same boat.
You should use a universal joint between the drive shaft and the propeller shaft.
Cats are weird.
Hypothesis, not Theories.
Meh. Tomato tomatoe
I do hope you guys can make the cadet training a regularly scheduled thing 😊
Yes hopefully
How come we always see Dame wearing a pink dress shirt when doing shit work around the boat?( skilled shit work that is )
They buy business shirts from (a) charity shop(s) for work gear. Low priced, long sleeves for sun protection and light weight for coolness.
High cotton content is best for fire resistance as well. Well it burns real well but it won't stick to you and burn you real bad like most polyester shirts
You'd be surprised how many supposed workshirt company's use high content polyester material
Maybe he just likes the colour? Shows how he can do dirty jobs and stay amazingly clean.
The pink shirt of precision
Every tradesman needs one in their cupboard........
😉😉
ive always thought your collared work shirts were a classy touch, but what the....you are ironing them now arent you? Too much time at the navy base. Get rid of your boots and swap for jandals and all will be forgiven.
